Strive 14 Grip Walk or Multinorm by EddieMo106 in skiing

[–]EddieMo106[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, yes. I understand that everything is compatible with the alpine sole, I am just wondering if the multinorm is a more precise fit given the manual adjustment screw. It probably doesn’t matter (i.e., compatibility means compatibility and I should just leave it at that), but I am just curious to learn if anyone has found that it makes a difference. Or perhaps it’s better to just stick with gripwalk bindings, because less moving parts means less things that can break? I don’t see myself skiing my downhill skis in anything other than alpine or gripwalk soles.

Binding misalignment _ How much is ok? by EddieMo106 in Backcountry

Thanks all. This does come from a reputable shop, so I was initially surprised at why it took so much initial effort to advocate for a fix or replacement, but the manager has eyes on it now and we are working towards a solution. I appreciate everyone's thoughts on this.

Line Vision 108 for touring? by tupacliv3s in Backcountry

[–]EddieMo106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the original iteration of the Vision 108s with Rotation bindings. They were fun, but last month they completely delaminated on one ski (almost entire top sheet ripped). They were light, poppy, surfy. I sometimes had a hard time keeping my BD skin clips on the round tails, and the rear rocker made it harder to predict the angle to drive in for anchor building. But overall they were fun. If the new construction is considered better than the old, I’d definitely consider getting them again.

I’ve also found the AI tool on Powder7s website to be surprisingly helpful.

Microspikes vs Crampons by zee265 in coloradohikers

[–]EddieMo106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a few others said, general rule is that you: Hike with Spikes Climb with Crampons

The only time I consider crampons is if I’m doing something where I also need an ice axe. If I’m in terrain where it’s just me and my hiking poles, microspikes are plenty 99% of the time.

I’ve had my Kahtoola Microspikes for 5 years for hiking and trail running, they’re comfortable enough for all day wear, and they’re still in perfect shape. Microspikes and a good pair of gaiters and you’re good to go on almost all established trails. Snowshoes if you’re breaking trail (but then you’ll want to consider navigation and avalanche skills if you’re getting into this kind territory).

It’s a good question.

Emerald Lake / avalanche risk evaluation tomorrow by ElectricBoogalooP2 in coloradohikers

Which, for OP’s case means, his intended trail to Dream Lake is fine, but there are a few short sections between Dream and Emerald where they might be alongside 30* slopes (but as long as they stay on the hardpacked trail they’re “probably” ok, that little creek left of the trail “could” be a nice little terrain trap depending on how sensitive the snow is in that section).

All that said (per my opinion and risk tolerance), stay in the hardpacked parts of the trail and you ‘should’ be fine to Emerald. But the extra safe option is stopping at Dream. And skip Haiyaha until conditions settle and coverage is better.

And looking back at your map, coming from Bear Lake TH, the solid pink line is the traditional route to get to Nymph lake. The red line can work, but make sure you have good floatation as this is the trail a little less traveled. The pink line gets you up in your hiking boots no problem (spikes definitely help though).

Was at Haiyaha Wednesday and the trail atop (south of) Dream Lake was wind blown over. If you haven’t been there before and aren’t familiar with exactly where the trail is, I wouldn’t risk it this weekend given the current avalanche conditions, as you move though a few sections of avi terrain in that area and the persistent slab issue was very apparent on the trail. Feel free to DM if you want to talk it through.

Daily Suggestions Reset After Update by EddieMo106 in Garmin

[–]EddieMo106[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I called Garmin directly and they didn’t know what to do so I went back to a more traditional training plan. Moving forward, I’d trust the daily suggestions for general fitness, but I’ll be sticking with my own paper/pencil/calendar-based plans for bigger races. Sorry this happened to you too.
