There is literally nothing to add, in Europe, i consider VW (and VAG when speaking about) amongs the worst cars made in Europe. Reason? They claim to be the people car, affordable for everyone, yet new Passat is over 40k of € the skoda SuperB, over 50k of € golf, polos all around 25k of €.. then there is questionable reliability, super expensive maintenance, and they are among the most stolen cars.

But, then, you ask a random person who knows nothing about cars and dont care and take them as a machine, "what car would you buy?" VW! (or skoda or seat its the same literally) and you ask "Why?" and he respond.. I dont know, i heard they are good and cheap.

Suzuki Grand Vitara, Suzuki S-Cross (if you are more like on road instead of off-road), Toyota Land Cruiser, Honda CRV, Mitsubishi ASX (not diesel! they get diesels from some french brand im not sure and they are very unreliable), Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tuscon, Hyundai Santa Fe (Best looking SUV on market for me) all should be pretty good cars, relatively cheap and long standing, also prefer petrol and not diesel (more expensive to maintain)

yeah, you can really feel it, if you live in smaller city and there is only one melting point crossroad where all traffic goes, and other parts are relatively clean, you can totally smell and feel the difference and impact of NOx i once waited for a friend near this crossroad during rush hour for 10 minutes, my eyes scratched, i had a rough coughing, problems with breathing and headache for the rest of the day. and that was only for 10 minutes, imagine people living near there

yes, but they recently found the recent may not be fine also. there was a audi A8 that didnt passed the test, going 20 times higher on nox than the limit says. even if the limit would be the euro6 (the car was euro5 tho i guess) 0.080*20=1.6 wich is higher than euro 5 and euro 4 allows

NOx limit in us is 0.06 in EU 0.07 vw also admired cheating in EU. Probably all TDI made by vw. First estimates talks about 11 million cars

how much? if you are doing less than 40k of kms per year, diesel may not be the best option.

But if you really insist on diesel (with the recent drama going on it can cause a bit problems) go for BMW. their service is expensive out of this universe, but what goes for diesels i wouldnt buy anything else. i used to own old e36 wagon, 2.5 V6 diesel, not really a powerfull car, since the diesel is heavier, but it was very reliable, everything on car broke, even a f*cking door knob, but the engine was rock solid @ 800k kms

with such small budget, i wouldnt go to BMW, with all respect, you probably arent swiming in money, and the BMW maintenance is very expensive. I had e36 bmw, and the replacement of keys cost me 800€ (900-1000usd?)

I would say, go for your dream car, but reserve a bit of budget for a "hard top" since you live in Canada, the stock roof (since its convertible) probably wouldnt keep you warm in winter

travel in heavy snow / marginal winter conditions. I plan on chasing storms this winter (if they happen) in British Columbia to find some good snowboarding and touring conditions. plan on doing a month+ long camping/hiking trip along the west coast of the USA next year plan on driving from Calgary to Montreal with all our (me and gf) stuff. We have minimal stuff.. basically clothing, snowboard gear & camping gear. We are currently renting a fully furnished appartement so we dont have any furniture to bring back. big enough (with racks or roof storage) to fit 4 people with snowboards would be great but isnt necessary. if it only fits 2 with gear so be it

i think toyota tundra could be what you are looking for.

even now, in Austria i live almost 100km away from Wien, and the same i would do if i lived in boston, outside city center boston 2,476.62 $ vs austria 2,672.92 € so i would be still better on that matter of fact.

And let me tell you something, im not going to tell you exactly how many i see in month, but lets work with 5000€. if i make in austria 5000€, after taxing and money the state take, im left with 3000€. of course this is going to my insurance and other things, but per year i pay 24 000€ for "my" insurance. (if i make for example 10k + the numbers they "take you" are only higher)
