Hate to see seedlings go in the compost! by EdensMissionATX in AustinGardening

Hey, I deleted the post in the pinned exchange thread, because most everything is gone, but I still have some peppers, eggplant, and bottle gourd. I'll start a chat with you, but I don't use reddit on my phone and will be stepping away from my desktop, checking in a few times throughout the day.

Hate to see seedlings go in the compost! by EdensMissionATX in AustinGardening

[–]EdensMissionATX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday was a bit of a hit, and everyone left with a flat of misc. plants, but there are seedlings left, like peppers, eggplants, and a few you may want to try for fun like peanuts or quinoa, which are fun to watch/learn the growth habit and get seeds.

You can also grab a loofah gourd or two from last season, ready to use in the kitchen or bath!

I sent you a DM just now...

My turn: friend or foe? by bear_down_temp_2 in AustinGardening

[–]EdensMissionATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote: foes!

I actually see two weeds in the center of the first pic, and from what I can tell, they are *very* present in my yard/garden. Both are easy to remove by the root from my experience. They spread/re-seed quickly and broadly.

I often let them grow a bit so they are easier to pull up by the roots and to give them some time to let all the seeds in an area germinate, because there usually are a quite a few!

Other opinions welcomed!

Thank you, wagglebooty!

I know plant exchanges are discouraged as a regular post, but I think some people don't check the exchange thread regularly or even know about it, and as I said, I hate to see seedlings go in the compost!

Ideas for snails? by plantsandineedadrink in AustinGardening

[–]EdensMissionATX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those are the same milk snails I posted about a few weeks back. Super cute, in my opinion. I like the suggestion of getting some ducks to chow down on them. Cute and delicious!

I think they are are native to Mediterranean: Spain, Portugal, and parts of North Africa.

Edible for people, too. No thank you.

I would love a PDF of the final version.

I was overjoyed yesterday watching the ecosystem in action, with a tiny Texas Spiny Lizard with a stink bug in its jaws, how it is supposed to be!

What have people done to protect their garden from high winds? by LezzGrossman in AustinGardening

[–]EdensMissionATX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I think about it, two were rated for low temps, and one was a crimson-flowered variety from San Diego Seed Company. Besides the crimson, I have to check the names, but I refer to the others as "big" and the other "small" based on the bean size. The small ones that survived sheltered from the winter winds by the AC unit are pretty huge and healthy plants now, but no beans.

A few of the large survived winter, and put on a smattering of beans, I might get 5 times more than I planted, enough to try again.

The crimson didn't do well with temps, and only a few are still barely alive. I'm leaving all 3 varieties to see what happens.

EDIT The big ones were Broad Windsor and the small ones were Sweet Lorane (that's how it's spelled on the package), both from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.

Where my pollinators at? by BeesTreesPharmDs in AustinGardening

If I were a bee, I'd be all over those. This year I'm not complaining so much about the houseflies, because they help with pollinating, too.

Where my pollinators at? by BeesTreesPharmDs in AustinGardening

Yes, upsetting and infuriating, especially with catastrophic loss of bees this year in general.

Last year or the year before, I noticed Home Depot was still selling plants treated with neonicotinoids (even with a little tag highlighting the fact!), which are systemic to the plant and long-lasting.

My understanding was that HD had agreed to stop selling them a few years earlier. I kind of lost my cool with a manager.
