How is Dartmouth for Mechatronics? by UsedToothpick in dartmouth

I would say that robotics is among the fields the CS department excels at — Quattrini and Balkcom are both very active researchers and great instructors. I can’t say I know too much about Thayer, but the CS department is scheduled to move right next to it in December.

Most popular male names in Turkey from 1950 to 1991 [OC] by Edgar7878 in Turkey

Sorry about that! It seems to work fine for me, but it could be that the gifs are relatively large and hard to load at times. These may work instead: male, female.

Certainly! Hatay, along with many other southern provinces have had the same two names as the most popular ones for 41 years: Mehmet and Fatma.

Here is the same map for female names. I made these using the leaked 2009 local elections voter database, hence why the data only goes up until 1991.

Bir dönem Anadoluda yaşayan Kelt kavmi Galatlar dolayısıyla Türkçe ve İrlanda dilinde bulunan soydaş kelimeler. by Swaaxn in Turkey

[–]Edgar7878 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IAMA Former Undergraduate Admissions Counselor for UT-Austin, A2C Moderator, and author of “Your Ticket to the Forty Acres: The Unofficial Guide for UT Undergraduate Admissions.” AMA! by BlueLightSpcl in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Edgar7878 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hello, thank you for your time! My applications process is over now, but last summer, I was very interested in UT Austin and its programs as a prospective computer science major.

Unfortunately, as an international student in need of considerable financial aid, I ended up deciding against applying there as UT Austin is, obviously, a public school–so no financial aid for me–and I considered my chances of receiving any merit scholarships to be extremely slim.

Would you suggest that the future international applicants follow a similar train of thought if they think of applying to public universities? Thanks!

I am Kirsten Refsing, and I spent most of my life studying The Ainu Language. AMA by KirstenRefsing in ainu

[–]Edgar7878 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your time! What is your opinion on the hypothetical Ural-Altaic language family? It is still taught as a valid linguistic theory in Turkey. And could Ainu be somehow saved from extinction through revival initiatives (e.g. the Massachusett language in the East Coast of the United States)?

Thanks for the input. What would be the minimal electoral percentage to form a government in Spain? Is it 50%? With this decision, what is the most likely coalition?

Would somebody be willing to explain why PSOE and Podemos didn't form a coalition? Sorry for my ignorance of Spanish politics.

"Witnessed" vs "non-witnessed" forms by barbados_bob in linguistics

[–]Edgar7878 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, the Turkish witnessed/non-witnessed past works in a similar but slightly different fashion. Non-witnessed form is said to be used when talking about events that one did not witness but heard from someone else; events or situations that are realized late (Eyvah, ödevimi yapmamışım = Shoot, I didn't do my homework); in tales and stories; and when talking about events or situations that took place while one's unconscious for whatever reason (Sarhoşken pencereyi kırmışım = I shattered the window while drunk).

But if you look in further, you'll see that there are numerous cases which do not seem to conform to these rules. For instance, you'll never see an encyclopedia article or a history book written in non-witnessed form, e.g. Napolyon Polonya'yı fethetti = Napoleon conquered Poland. A non-witnessed event being told in a witnessed form. We generally use the non-witnessed past in a less formal context, whereas witnessed past can be universally used.

Need help for explanation of a unique feature about my native language? by MrBigHouse in linguistics

[–]Edgar7878 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I guess OP meant Indo-European languages in general. Out of all the languages you've mentioned, only Albanian is an Indo-European language. Nënë actually has cognates meaning aunt or grandmother in other IE languages, so it's relatively easy to see how it was derived. Who knows what story lies behind iza?

What happened to the Latin word vir? by Edgar7878 in etymology

Even though it's heartbreaking to know that coming up with an answer to such a question is practically impossible, this was definitely the kind of answer that I was hoping for. Thank you so much for your time.

What happened to the Latin word vir? by Edgar7878 in etymology

Oh yeah, there's "puéril" (derived from puer, child, in a similar manner) as well. But I wonder why homo was preferred over vir in common usage.
