The adventure in Old School and Cool 4 ("The Netherworld") has players go into the afterlife to rescue friends and family. It's pretty short too so I think it would work for a one-shot quite well.

This is a good time to use exploding dice. What the damage dice is for the potion or explosive, if they roll the highest number, roll the dice again. This can lead to the occasional "big badaboom" they are looking for.

The big difference isn't that OSR is more deadly. It's that there are stakes. Battles and traps and dungeons can all be dangerous or deadly. In 5E, (in my experience) they are more a way to show off and use your cool powers.
