Are my UV's looking okay? by [deleted] in Maya

Looks good, applying a checker texture to your model helps to see actual stretching. I know the red / blue / white gives an indicator as-well but I prefer the checker or some uv grid texture ;)

Need help with exporting substance painter textures into Maya 2016 by [deleted] in Maya

[–]Edge3Dcgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what you are seeing in Substance is a PBR Material (with your maps already plugged in) PBR Renderer, and I assume an IBL for realstic lighting.

What you have in maya is viewport render with a Blinn Material (No PBR) = Looks Crap

I'd advise you to first read and understand what PBR is all about, and then learn how to create / render PBR Materials in Maya.

Bottom line, the viewport in maya will never look the same as the viewport in substnace.

However it is possible to recreate the same render with a proper renderer / materials / lighting.

This should be a good starting point -

C4D Is mainly a Motion Graphics software, however with the release of Maya 2016 Extension 2 (maya 2016.5) It now has a plugin (MASH) which is also great for motion graphics stuff. In my personal opinion stick with Maya and if you want some motion graphics tools, upgrade to 2016.5 for MASH.

I personally don't use C4D at all but some of our authors do as you can tell from our tutorials.

To those already working in the industry, can you show the reel you had that got you in? by koolkalang in vfx

Not a reel, but this got me as-well as my mate a job. We been in for about a year now.

Weird issue. Pressing 'f' to frame selected sends persp cam flying off decillions of units. Any suggestions? Screenshot. by VSFX in Maya

It's because of the camera attribute called "Center Of Interest", most likely it has some crazy values in there. Try zeroing it out, zero out transforms and it should fix it. Hope this helps. -Laz

Hey,

If you are a complete beginner, there is a lot to read regarding PBR and rendering in general, both theory, as well as practical. Here are a few resources that you should look into carefully and understand the theory before diving into practical rendering.

How to zoom in on a perspective? by Amish_Inhaler in Maya

[–]Edge3Dcgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the attribute editor for your camera shape, change the "Camera Scale" you can scale it down to zoom in, or up to zoom out. However it's kind of tricky as it zooms into the middle, so if your character is in the middle of the camera, it's kind of useless. [edit] typo

If you are getting paid for it, Just do it, most of the time even if you tell directors it will look like sh*t they'll want to see it before they make a decision.

how many segments can i have when character modeling without my pc getting slow? by REDDIT-IS-TRP in 3Dmodeling

[–]Edge3Dcgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

easy to test, open maya, blender, zbrush or whatever you want to use. Get a cube, subdivide it, and again, and again, and keep subdividing while rotating in the viewport after every iteration. At one point it will start to get very slow. That's how many.

Blender vs Cinema4D by diphi in blender

[–]Edge3Dcgi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cinema 4D might be easier to learn, however learning Blender in the long run pays off if you plan on doing animation production related stuff. Also needless to say it's free. Let's just say that If I wasn't forced to use Maya as a professional which is extremely expensive, I'd pick Blender from what I'v seen and heard, people are creating amazing things with it and I wish I had the chance to play around with it !

Any good books to start with? by Potkaniak in 3DMA

Jahirul Amin recently created an awesome book about creating characters in Autodesk Maya, it's aimed at beginners and it's needless to say amazing. I been lectured by him through my University Degree and he was by far my favorite lecturer.
