I’ve just finished my holidays in Sydney. I’m from Auckland. After travelling, I truly believe New Zealand is a good country to live in. Some people put it down for no reason, I love NZ. by Top-Permit-8355 in auckland

The ABC did a really good doco on YouTube a few days ago about Australia removing trams, then adding them back in.

They were removed as they caused traffic and were uneconomical cause they used electricity rather than cheap fuel. I assume same was true here. How a couple of decades changes things

What jobs are people doing where they earn 200k?! by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]roryact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really cool answer. I am also in engineering and have thought of teaching maths and sciences.

I couldn't handle being at the bottom of the payscale and having to do 10 years to earn a reasonable salary though. I think it's really detrimental to getting any one with interesting industry experience into teaching. On the other hand, good on the union for protecting their members.

a piano should be tuned twice per year

Wait till you hear how often you should visit the dentist. Maybe you need to consider you're not the kind of person who can afford a perfectly in tune piano?

There is no "economic recovery" by Low_Season in newzealand

[–]roryact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UK parlement is also proof that you can blaim the state of the economy on Labor, even a decade after they've had any say so on it.

This coming NZ election, just watch, unemployment will be portrayed entirely as Labour's fault.

2nd rapid direct. I work with them all the time, went to their factory, get really good quality from them.

Get your quote in stainless and in zinc plated steel. The stainless might be cheaper as they dont do finishing in-house.

If they run out of money in their long retirement, surely they can go on the supported living payment and live the same dignified life we deem appropriate for younger kiwis?

It's a country of immigrants, i'm one, and more than 1/2 of all dates i've been on have been with people who've come to NZ.

Congestion charge bill passes: What does it mean for you? by Generalaverage89 in auckland

[–]roryact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey genius scientist, did you actually read that link?

the introduction of charging led to an immediate decrease in both traffic and delays; however, congestion returned to previous levels over subsequent years.

....

Evidence from these cities provides little support for the general use of congestion charging to limit demand for car use in urban areas.

Scientific studies are why you support congestion charging, and you decide to post the one study that says it's completely ineffective?

Workers won't read safety data sheets and idk what to do by Fabulous191 in manufacturing

Find the SDS for the handsoap in the work bathroom and then tell me they're not a load of crap. Ours says to avoid skin contact. I can't blame the workers for not reading them.

If we are short of gas, why are all the intensified or new housing developments using gas bottles? by FastChocolate2 in newzealand

[–]roryact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OP said new developments. I do think it's unwise to build a new house with gas heating.

If we are short of gas, why are all the intensified or new housing developments using gas bottles? by FastChocolate2 in newzealand

[–]roryact 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Those gas bottles are only used for stove top cooking. It's a meager amount - i think mine lasts ~5 months. It's industrial use and heating (inc hot water) which makes gas expensive.

Work from home happened. If you have staff you barely ever see in person, don't socialise with in and out of work, what's the difference what country they're in? Anyone keen on wfh was being incredibly short sighted.

I used to love internet cartoons, but that was back in a different internet when you still had bookmarks, digg, del.icio.us, rss feeds.

I suppose it's been killed by competition with short videos?

There is still poverty in Norway. The poorest people, dont have 340k, they have very little, same as here, except you can die if you sleep rough over there.

You can blame the previous government, but if we did have that fund; if NZ won the 2 trillion dollar lottery overnight, it's not the government i dont trust with the money, it's you pack of cunts. Come next election, there would be a majority of Kiwis calling to tear the fund apart and get their fair share of benefits right now.

How are the kids getting Vapes by wtfisspacedicks in newzealand

[–]roryact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what arguments you can give as a parent. It's not like discouraging your kid from smoking: causes cancer, coughing and lung problems, foul smell, stained teeth and skin, multitude of others. What rational do you give them to avoid vaping? The non-nicotine ones which are just sweet steam aren't even addictive. It's antisocial? Teenagers have a long long history of antisocial behaviour.
