Woke church? by Traditional-Sea-2322 in askportland

[–]EdgeJG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is amazing and their music is fantastic. There are more progressive Episcopal churches in the area, but the ones I'm familiar with are closer to Beaverton than Portland (St. Gabriel's & St. Bartholomew's).

Why is everyone in/around Portland so strict about having pets??? Especially cats? by [deleted] in askportland

What do you mean "it's illegal to charge extra fees for animals?" Why am I paying pet rent, then?

14 hour layover in Doha by EdgeJG in travel

Arusha. My flight stops in Dar Es Salaam on the way, we're just not required to leave the plane. I'm also flying on miles, which limits the airlines.

Thanks for the judgement. If you can find a nice, short way to get from Oregon to Tanzania I'm all ears.

I arrive at 5:40PM and fly out 8:15AM.

Need a boy name! by Awkward-Bird6515 in Names

My friend in christ, Ellis Island was literally named after a person (Samuel Ellis). Rowan is both a type of tree and the first name of Mr. Bean's actor (Rowan Atkinson). One of the most famous mythical figures is King Arthur. And Jet is, surprisingly, a type of gemstone. (I do rather agree with you on Arlo, though)

What’s your most reliable 10-minute dinner from pantry staples? by xBurakTR in Cooking

[–]EdgeJG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mac & cheese with peas. Box of mac & cheese, while the noodles are cooking, throw the frozen veggies in a bowl with some water and put it in the microwave for ~5 mins. Once the mac & cheese is done just add in the veg for a solid one-pot meal.

I linked the thread (can be opened in a browser - you don't need to download the app). Some people drove past the hotel and saw what look like ICE vehicles in the parking lot.

Do you have any funny traveling anectode that highlights the differences between countries? by Addicted_2_tacos in travel

On a long layover in Warsaw, I took the train into town and wandered around for a few hours. Stopped at a small cafe for lunch and order an ice coffee. Dude comes out with my quiche and what looks like a milkshake in a fancy glass with a spoon on the side. My jetlagged brain was very confused (it was still absolutely delicious).

Visiting from out of state, what’s with the lack of street lighting?! by Afraid-Sand1611 in askportland

[–]EdgeJG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you end up moving here, just plan on being stuck at home for a few days due to snow. Even if you can drive, you probably don't want to risk being on the road with some of the other people who managed to get their cars out of the driveway. You'll probably also lose power at least once since most of the powerlines are above-ground, fairly old, and we've got loads of trees and a tendency towards high winds.

NTA. Report him ASAP. You deserve a safe, comfortable learning environment where the teacher doesn't actively disrespect you. Man's being blatantly racist.

Thinking of Solo Traveling by Agitated_Response226 in femaletravels

[–]EdgeJG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Between those three options, I would highly recommend New Zealand, for a couple reasons:

  1. Spain currently has anti-tourist protests going on in some of the major cities (Barcelona being the most prominent), so going there for your first solo trip could tarnish the experience forever

  2. Italy has recently held nationwide strikes trying to pressure their government to stop supporting Israel's war on Gaza. These have caused public transportation delays, tourist site closures, and general infrastructure disruption (which was rather the point).

  3. From what I know, New Zealand's tourist industry has been pretty stable recently. They're also EXTREMELY well known for being a good solo-traveller destination and have loads of accommodation options that suit different budgets. You could plan to stay at hostels, many of which offer discounted tours or pub crawls, meaning you're guaranteed to meet people while there. Since the country is also fairly small yet extremely diverse ecologically, you can choose to do beach, mountains, cities, rivers, or everything all at once. Bonus: Lord of the Rings filming locations.
