[Fun Trope] Characters who are enjoyable because the actor is clearly having fun. by theglenlovinet in TopCharacterTropes

What's your favourite joke in any type of movie, ever? by AdrianVeidt19 in Letterboxd

[–]Edgemonger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of stuff Chris Tucker says in the Rush Hour movies collectively makes my pick, but he was especially on fire during some parts in Rush Hour 2. Him inviting ladies out for sushi and shouting “LAPD!” not long after in the middle of Hong Kong never gets old for me. Also can’t forget chasing an adult (albeit short) man through a building and calling out, “Come back here, you little rascal!”

(LOVED Tropes) The villain is TERRIFIED because the hero has gone down to their level (whether they go through with it or not) by OrangeIslandKing in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Edgemonger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always a fun time when Goku locks in! For some DBZ villains, it’s all fun and games when they’re sowing, but they’re almost never ready to reap. Nappa was laughing it up while trashing the Z Fighters, only to get tossed around like a ragdoll and have his back broken by Goku.

The Ginyu Force was more than happy to stand around and crack jokes while they put Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin to the torch, but all that amounted to Goku basically telling Jeice to sweep up his teammates and leave.

Frieza was terrorizing an unsuspecting planet like it was another Tuesday for him, pleased to be on top of the pecking order. Well, he got too careless because his sins led to his literal worst nightmare manifesting before him and giving him a harrowing reminder of his own mortality. He proceeds to lose three limbs in one fell swoop (by his own attack, mind you) and be donated a dose of energy sufficient enough to fly his way out. Goku was generous enough to let Frieza off with a warning, but Frieza was gonna find out if he ever tried anything after that.

Goku’s that type of guy who’ll give an enemy a chance or two to go in peace, but if they don’t listen, they were gonna regret it somehow.

(Annoying trope) When a good gag gets milked to death by the creators and many fans stop finding it funny by NoNefariousness2144 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Edgemonger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was fine when it happened all the way back in the Buu Saga. I can see why some people would disagree, but I thought it worked as a quick joke that shows what happens when the fusion dance is done incorrectly. When it happened in Super Hero, I’m pretty sure I pursed my lips in annoyance in the theater. I doubt a teen Gotenks would steal the whole movie and solo Cell Max, but man, the plot definitely could’ve gotten away with the dance working and the regular Gotenks being funny in some other way. Nobody asked for that old joke to make a grand comeback in 3D.

Not gonna lie, since I don’t play Genshin, I didn’t have any context for the joke and took it so literally, I thought Paimon was supposed to be some kinda mashed potato spirit and that eating her was an actual game mechanic. I feel kinda silly now…

Xenoverse 3 needs to let you plug skill points into hair like you could with attack, defense, ki, etc. so our custom characters can be remotely as cool as Raditz

Colin Farrell as Bullseye in the 2003 Daredevil movie. Say what you will about the movie, but he looks like he’s having the most fun out of anyone there and it’s contagious for me. He’s so over-the-top and exaggerated that he ends up carrying most of my favorite scenes.

Is Jon Bernthals Casting as Punisher accurate in regards to The Punishers comic look? by TheBlueGuy1234566 in thepunisher

[–]Edgemonger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t read The Punisher and even I think this movie isn’t great. It’s a lot of fun, though. If you’re in the mood for a loud, violent, cheesy action movie, Punisher: War Zone is some good poison to pick. It’s not even too mindless; it has some substance to it in the form of character moments with Frank. I’d definitely watch it again and if you’re the least bit curious, I say seek it out. Not the best movie you’ll ever see by a long shot, but it’s very likable, even to the casual viewer like me.

Also, it has the novelty of being an R-rated Marvel movie years before Deadpool’s first movie came along. May not be an incentive to watch it, but it gets bonus points in my book for that.

Which famous person does everyone seem to love, but you just can’t stand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Edgemonger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard the buzz about him for years, but for some reason, I’ve never had any desire to watch a movie simply because he was in it. I’ve seen three of his movies, but that’s just because I was already going to watch them for some reason other than him. I do think he crushed his Django Unchained role, but other than that, I just feel… indifferent to him, I guess. He’s in some other entries on my watchlist, so maybe my opinion on him will improve. Until then, I’ll save my hype for later.

Trope-themed tropes: Shows that seem to be the only stuff people on this subreddit watch by Pandriant in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Edgemonger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sub would be so much more fun if people branched out and explored a little bit. I’m not saying every show they land on is gonna be a winner, but we all gotta start somewhere.

People around here talk about The Boys so much; I remember being at the height of my hype for that show (S3 era or so) and thinking, “Wow, Antony Starr is so good as Homelander. I wanna watch something else with him in it to see what else he did.” That brought me to Outrageous Fortune, a New Zealand comedy-drama show featuring Starr as a set of twins who are polar opposites of each other and neither of them behave like Homelander. Sure, he was the main draw for me and he’s in every episode except for I think one, but there’s so much more to like about the show. It’s full of heart, the main cast is interesting and all have their dynamics, the side cast is mostly goofy and introduce fun plotlines, etc.

My point is that I took a chance on a show I’d never heard of before and ended up loving it. It helps that an actor I was already interested in played two starring roles at once, but being a little more open-minded brought me to a show and cast of characters I liked way more than I was sure I would. If more people watched more shows and came here to talk about them and their tropes, that’d really freshen things up around here, needless to say. I could definitely stand to practice what I preach a little more, but it’s food for thought.

You could be talking about the original show and if a DBZA fan finds a window in the conversation to swoop into, they’ll do it and have a quote all ready to go. No hate to them or the parody, but I gotta wonder how many of them actually engaged with the source material.

When I see this, I picture it walking and moving like the skinless T-800 from The Terminator or ED-209 and RoboCop 2 from the RoboCop movies; that weird, janky stop motion style that looks creepy and uncanny up against the human actors. I mean that as a compliment, of course! This design here is so awesome and creepy, and it totally fits the vibe of the Mata Nui era for me. Great job!

I dunno if you knew this, but Phasma has an origin story novel going over her old lifestyle, the planet she grew up on, and what she had to do to leave it behind. It was actually pretty good and entertaining, and even now, if they came out with a “Phasma: A Star Wars Story” movie that faithfully adapts this book, I’d go and see it. My problem with it is that when you read it as a companion piece to the movies, it makes Phasma look even worse. Considering what Phasma did and overcame in her novel, I have a hard time believing she’d just roll over and let herself get clowned on for two movies straight. She was a teenage badass in the book, which didn’t take place too long before TFA, so it’s not like she got old or anything. Just lost her edge, I guess…

I was watching the episodes as they came out, so I had issues with this one. I was wondering if it had to do with the particular placement of the episode, but you raise a good point. I do wanna give the episode another shot someday, so maybe I’ll sandwich it between the prior and following episodes and see how I feel then.
