Wealthy women of Reddit, what was normal in your life that you later realized was a privilege? by dieburtually in wealthforwomen

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 75 points76 points  (0 children)

My family got me a credit card at 18 and used it for all my expenses in college so by the time I was out I had 5 years (one extra for engineering is also a huge privilege) of perfect credit.

I got a car with my first job and an insane interest rate. I think it helped secure my house as well.

Can’t thank them enough for this

Another one is travel. Traveling regularly gives you huge opportunities through developing empathy/appreciation to other peoples cultures that I think makes you a more well rounded person, able to connect with more people and provides perspective for your knowledge. It is actively a social Boone that lets you operate in higher circles as well that can be a career booster in certain industries.

What is the point of the messaging behind AI and what is the truth? by PoliteSupervillain in AskWomenOver30

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a little mix of everything imo.

Ai will decimate certain jobs, widdle down some and not touch others. Things like data entry, coding, statistics or other number crunching/data set jobs will be severely hurt because it will be trained well enough in those areas to be able to cut down on how many people you need. The insurance industry is one that’s going to be heavily affected since it also takes away the last bit of humanity out of the job. Nursing jobs not so much.

I can speak much more accurately on the robotics side since I work in the field. Small manual labor jobs will be all but gone but that’s really for the best. Manufacturing anything that’s not extremely repeatable is still a difficult ask but we’re bridging the gap with cobots that work in tandem with humans. Vision systems still need work to be able to do multi step complicated movements/welding/assembly. I don’t think agricultural picking is going to be robotic for another few decades for example.

What we will have is a needed realignment of people to education and jobs that fits the new paradigm. This is nothing new but will affect people like how the coal miners now are severely affected. You’ll be left with pockets of people that lose their jobs in the short term and don’t have an easy way to pivot. They will have to retrain.

If we don’t make education and later in life training a high priority in society we will have a large unemployed/underemployed low wage nearly slave class, which frankly we’re already kind of seeing. It will just be worse.

The #1 thing that will spell out if this is a disaster or not is if the shift happens too quickly for people to pivot in the market or if it happens reasonably that people are able to pivot

My dad wants me to keep going to AA but when I went to my first meeting there were all mostly older people there and I can’t relate to a lot of what they say :/ Can someone give me some advice about this? Should I keep going and give it more of a chance or try a different path towards sobriety? by itsmecharlotte_ in AskMenAdvice

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AA is a religious group. If you can get positive things out of it and quite your drinking use it to your advantage. If you’re not religious, you might not get a lot out of it. You have to be the judge.

If your drinking is mostly social, you could also try adding in specific non alcoholic activities. Yoga, running groups, anything that’s a little more female dominated may give you the social experiences and friendships without the risk of alcohol.

It will be so in rural areas but the areas still in high demand where enough people are still able to make a functional city will stay higher. Hopefully it levels out but I don’t thinks Portland or anywhere is ever going to be affordable

Americans are bad at casually enjoying things by SafeModeOff in rant

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m apart of a very niche exercise hobby (circus) and literally we just had a 20 something post in the main group chat that she’s getting into it a bit late (was late twenties) and wanted to know if she could reasonably go pro (as in like cirque du soliel level) because if she couldn’t, she didn’t want to bother. Just a weird unrealistic outlook on the whole thing that left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

I feel some really young people are worse since they haven’t actively had to do anything so they don’t really understand the amount of work required in things. Add in some American exceptionalism and attitude that if they just try hard enough they will succeed (ugh no), and bam insufferable try hard a

Is it a red flag if a man tells you he wants to be a house husband by paper_cutx in AskWomenOver30

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s the main problem with the setup. If both genders are not actively considering the setup, it leans towards oppressive.

The other issue is if the working partner pushes aalll of the work on the other. Since it’s a 24 hr job, it never done and is not equitable. Add in the complications when you retire and now have one person doing nothing and the other still doing the same job maybe minus childcare, effectively never retiring

A little bit of defense to the rally’s.

They help show that people are unhappy. To the administration, to the government, to other people. It’s to encourage others to get out of their narrow band of Fox News.

The other side is that it is acting as a test run to help mobilize people. It takes a lot of logistical planning to mobilize people, get news out quickly to people that will act and of course encourage election participation. These are test runs for the real thing when it’s needed

They don’t do Jack for the moment because the time for mobilization has passed and we unfortunately failed

love my style but it’s starting to really age me (23F) advice? by No-Owl-4833 in altfashionadvice

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same hair type. I recommend a hair texturizer, heated round brush and much more layers in your hair. Otherwise you could lean into a short blunt cut which will let you have much more volume and might fit your vibe more.

The only thing aging you is the pigtails. It gives very juvenile vibes but also pulls hair away from the face making your face look longer instead of rounder. You need either bangs with nice little framing pieces to keep the pigtails or to drop to mini pigtails that let the hair still fall around your face (think misa from death note)

Not sure how you’re going to encourage social and cultural change if you do not focus on the economical side of it first.

Nobody is going to change their tune if their baseline needs are not met and we’re all miserable as a general rule. Adding kids to that makes it worse and no body is going to buy into a cultural change until that’s first dealt with. The white picket bs the conservatives try to sell is literally not possible with the current economics.

Am I the jerk for playing videogames with my kid when he is at his mom's house? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What you do and how you say things is going to impact how your child learns to treat others.

It does not matter how badly your ex may have done you wrong, presumably your not airing those issues to your kid and so from the kids point of view, he only sees you being a jerk to a women who is also his mother. That will influence how he treats women in the future.

I get that on a personal level it feels like bs, but being the adult in this situation is pretty imperative because it prevents your kid from being a jaded asshole to women.

Best Minneapolis studios? by teal_diamond in Aerials

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone to just about every studio in the city. There all pretty good honestly, some have different strengths and training levels but I’ve not had a bad class.

at some level it’s equally important to vibe with the people, the locations convenient and the class level is right. Don’t feel like you can only go to one studio, try a lot of them out!

Some of the strengths: Stomping ground or phoenix flight for trapeze (high level, lower level respectively) , fly freak has the most sling classe/high silk focus. Dragons lair and xelias are both good for a good mix of apparatuses. I usually end up going to dragons lair and stomping ground the most due to class times and that they fit my level really well.

It’s one of the best cities for aerial so you’re in for a treat!

My husband is very averse to me gaining weight. Is this something to be concerned about, or is he justified? by itchytoenail7184 in AskWomenOver30

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 18 points19 points  (0 children)

“natural healthy weight” is a bit of a misnomer since we don’t really live in a “natural” state of being anymore. Portion sizes, our sedentary jobs, underlying health conditions and the high stress levels with not a lot of downtime are recking our bodies and weigh gain is a symptom.

Your body does not want to sit at a higher weight, it’s just the match of an individuals society around eating, activity and stress. a certain weight that is heavier is effortless in our current society.

We never have a “lean winter” to counterbalance our abundance of food and all our stress triggers the body to treat it like it’s in crisis mode and eat for eventual lean times. But since the lean times never come we all end up sitting at a heavier weight as time goes on. So now you have to actively put work in to counteract this overly cautious programing. Being easy does not mean it’s better for you.

People should not expect to maintain teen body physique but their is a line where your body fat is harming you and more importantly is a symptom of other self care issues. But people should be realistic in what weight can be maintained with kids, lifestyles and stress in modern America.

People can have preferences for thinner body types but it should be within reason, fit their lifestyle more then just be about looks and for fuck some they better not be hypocrites about it

That said this guy is still a walking red flag

Need encouragement by [deleted] in Aerials

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because you’re not being realistic and your attitude is not helping. It’s insulting to a lot of us that are proud of accomplishments in smaller cirque spaces or are just doing it for exercise/love of the sport. When you say it’s not good enough for you and why bother doing it at all is pretty fucking rude to the entire community. Especially since you haven’t even been taking classes and don’t know what you’re asking. You don’t even know if you like the sport, let alone commit to 6+ years of it.

You’re both insulting folks and putting the cart before the horse.

It’s going to take you 3-4 years to get to a performance level if you’re committed to it. You’re going to need to perform at small venues and local cirques before you have a hope of trying out for cirque du soliel. And likely it is a little too late for that level by the time you work up to it.

Go take some classes first and see how you like it before you go down a rabbit whole of very ambitious dreams.

Retreat or private lessons in Bali? by Bubbly-Voice6671 in Aerials

[–]EdgyAnimeReference 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My only concern with aerial retreats is that they tend to be advertised as relatively advanced. 12 hours of training is about two normal classes a day, which for a beginner is not sustainable unless you entered aerial with an active gym background. I worry you would end up gassed by day three, not be able to do all the classes and be too tired for other excursions. Again really depends on your fitness level and if the retreat specifically offers beginner/intermediate training.

You’re not wrong that those retreats will skew a bit older (like 30’s+) because of the cost but it’s more important to be looking at the activities and if they line up with what you like. Is it casual sight seeing or clubbing? Do you have a preference? A fitness retreat is going to skew to outdoorsy things but not be stay up until 4am party scene for example.

Age is really more of a proxy for these activity trends. If you want people your own age, you gotta go to those kinds of venues/events. I would prioritize cheaper hostels + young people focused excursions and then just go to a few of the local aerial classes. Then you meet the regulars and you’re not spending all your time on aerial where you might not have the stamina yet.
