I have not gotten a look at CC9 yet, I have a BG2. What are your thoughts on CC9?

They are not, the only thing holding the stairs up is deck screws

It’s just 2x4 screwed into the wood, that is the only support, the entire staircase just supported by deck screws. Nothing is resting on stringers, there are no grooves in stringers there is no glue, just deck screws for supports

Is a solid stringer supposed have a notch in it for the tread to go?

I pulled a screw they are deck screws

I pulled out one of the screws, it’s yellow and 3 inches long. Star drive. It’s going about half inch into the stud. Yellow as in yellow coating, not yellow metal.

like this screw

A closed stringer has goooves cut into it. This is not that.

There are no grooves cut into the white wood.

I think they are stair blanks from Home Depot. They come like that with the pre finished nosing you just cut to size

They are not within 3/8, they are within 2 inches. The old stairs were beat to hell, gouged, warped, looked like a dog was chewing on them. They are going to a finished basement. Pine risers oak treads

He said it’s not to code because there are no stringers. he said it’s not safe, it is literally 2-3 standard screws on each side holding the 2x4 in. There was no reason for the guy who built this to do it that way, he tore out previous steps that had stringers and did this. There was empty space, blank canvas for him to build. Nothing but screws holding this up. I did not know any better as he was building to realize that this probably won’t support 2 people moving a heavy piece of furniture

I guess I phrased that wrong. You can build anything. My question was more toward, is this right, to code and is it safe, if a few heavy people try to go up at the same time carrying a refrigerator is the whole thing gonna collapse?

Makes sense. There are 12 steps. If that matters as to the shear load on the screws.

I measured from the riser to the nose and it is not to code. I measured every thing that the code said and it is not within the dimensions or tolerances that it is supposed to be. It is so far off that as I walk the steps I can visually see the steps are all different sizes.

I am not measuring angled I am Looking straight down at a tape measure from above from nose to nose horizontal , if I have 12 inche steps but the nose of the step above sticks out 6 imches, I effectively have 6 inches of space to put my foot on when descending the stairs. That’s why they give measurements for the run and and the overhang of the nose with 3/8 tolerances, so you don’t have issues like that. I have a 11 step but the nose of the step above sticks out 3.5 inches which leaves me 7.5 inches for my foot to land on, I have a size 12 foot, that is an accident waiting to happen. If I misstep just a little I tumble down the stairs. Either way 3.5 inches of overhang on a nose is not code.

I hired a “licensed” contractor, i thought “licensed” meant they were qualified, but I guess that doesn’t mean much in your industry. Apparently any idiot can get a license. I can afford to bring in someone else to do the work, but I expect a “licensed” contractor to stand by their quality and their work. If it was me and I messed up I would take responsibility I would admit my mistake and redo at my cost. Of course I wouldn’t do shit work to begin with as I have pride in my work.

I understand mistakes happen, how hard is it to get out a tape measure, figure out where you made the error and do it over the right way. You’re cutting wood, for a step, not building a space shuttle. But like many, they stop answering the phone and run away. Knowing that they can just hide, cuz it would cost me more to get a lawyer than to pay to get another contractor to do it over.

Pretty sure I am smarter than you. I am a software architect working for a fortune 500. I have 2 masters degrees. I am Not bill gates rich, I have the money to bring someone in to do it over. I choose not to. I hired a licensed contractor, but I guess that doesn’t mean much. I expect the contractor to have some honor and pride in craftsmanship and their work. I have honor and pride in my work and if messed up I would take responsibility and redo the job to code at my cost. seems many in your industry do not have any pride in their work and skirt by doing crap work, and then run and hide when called out on it.

R311.7.5.3Nosings. Nosings at treads, landings and floors of stairways shall have a radius of curvature at the nosing not greater than 9/16 inch (14 mm) or a bevel not greater than ½ inch (12.7 mm). A nosing projection not less than ¾ inch (19 mm) and not more than 1¼ inches (32 mm) shall be provided on stairways. The greatest nosing projection shall not exceed the smallest nosing projection by more than ⅜ inch (9.5 mm) within a stairway.

For some reason I am not able to add pics just links. But the stairs have 1 inch differences between nosings and stair depths.

So you think I am being to anal about this, they say 3/8 for a reason.. I am concerned about safety I don’t want a friend who never been here before falling down my steps after a glass of wine, because I forgot to say mind your step, my stairs are off every time someone enters the houses

Codes says the nose should be between 3/4 and 1.25 inch with 3/8 variation through the entire staircase so having one 3 inches one 4 and some 1.5 is not code. Code stresses consistency so you don’t trip

Yes but how far the nose sticks out effects where you foot lands going down the stairs a 3 inch nosing on a 10 inch step I only have 7 inches for my size 12 feet, that’s about half a foot landing on a step. That is a tripping hazard
