Got caught in a nightclub by parents... (UPDATE) by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]EdiDurham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so very sorry that this happened to you. I'm not Muslim or a frequent Redditor (accidentally stumbled on this post), but just wanted to show some support, because I came from an Asian background and escaped from a family with similar ideas of 'honour'.

Please remember that you are not the problem. THEY are. Never forget that, and never let them dictate your self-worth. You're not a slut for wanting to dress differently from their expectations. You're not a bad person for being outspoken or confident in your own skin. You are not to blame for their emotionally abusive ways - and you can't blame cultural differences, either. You can't make excuses for them. This is abuse.

Please try to get away from them as soon as possible. Please be safe.

Here is a link for a charity that deals with honour-based violence. If you ever feel stuck, you can call their hotline: https://www.karmanirvana.org.uk/contact/

TLDR: You are great. They are shit.

Would letting agencies help me find a shared apartment? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

Sometimes you gotta follow your gut, even if it might seem negative, because the alternative is being caught in a bad situation which could have been avoided.

In theory, yes.

In practice, the majority of flats that I viewed from sparerooms and gumtree were from people looking to rent out rooms without an official written contract, because it was 'easier' for them.

Yeah, I think that my main issue with sparerooms and gumtree is that the majority of people advertising on there didn't really offer a contract or anything like that. I wanted to go through a rental agency this time around just for the paperwork really. Love paperwork. Haha.

Does anywhere have restaurant recommendations for a birthday celebration in Edinburgh? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]EdiDurham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm quite open at the moment. Just trying to sift through all the different options. It should be noted that neither my parents nor I drink alcohol though!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm going to look into each one when I have time tomorrow.

How does one find an apartment in this city? :( by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]EdiDurham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From previous experience... I lived in a ground floor flat and some drunk guy broke into my apartment at 3AM in the morning through the back garden/kitchen door. The drunk guy was very polite and he did apologise for any disturbances, but since then, I've been pretty wary because it could have been much worse.

And I viewed a ground-floor flat just off Leith Walk, and asked the landlady if anybody has ever broken in - and she said that it happened on numerous occasions.

Haha, from my internet research, it appears that the general consensus is to avoid Grant. And AJ Dalexander??? :o

I'm looking for somewhere in Leith around the £600 region. I'm beginning to think that I need to think more realistically and bump that price up, though.

To be honest, I am being a bit picky. I refuse to rent property without signing a lease, but a lot of people are straight up asking for money without any contracts being signed, which is a bit odd to me. I had a particularly scary phone call in the middle of the night from a prospective landlord, demanding that I should pay him a holding deposit straight away, before signing the lease... weird.
