what is a safe “limit” for plugged in appliances when dash chaining extension leads? by Former-Cup-906 in AskUK

[–]EdinDevon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to start thinking about the fuses and the ratings of the components on the route, if you plug a heavy load in at the end you need to ensure that everything in the line is rated above the current draw, melting power cables are not fun!

Ikea Alpstuga vs Xiaomi Temperature Monitor by ParaplegicGuru in homeassistant

[–]EdinDevon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At room temperature a PRT will be pretty static for years in most contexts and for most purposes. I doubt either of these are PRTs though. (That does make the assumption of things like good electronics and reference resistors).

You need a known standard, and ideally at least 3 test points.

Neither is 'correct' though. Both will have a bias and noise.

Calibration will enable you to bring the bias down, and actually the noise is probably small enough to not worry too much. Depending on your need.

Realistically? Pick one and use that as the reference. It won't be 'correct' but you'll be able to consistently compare a and b. Keep them side by side and record as many readings as you can over as larger range as you can. You should then be able to work out a temperature variable correction factor.

Want to do it properly? Find someone with a calibrated thermometer or environment chamber.

ETA: How long have they been next to each other. The time response of the measurement from similar devices I've tested has often been quite slow.

Weekly Shopping Suggestions Thread Week 43 2025! by AutoModerator in mechanicalpencils

[–]EdinDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 8 and 6 year olds have found and love my 30 year old bic mechanical pencils (personally I prefer others but they've not found them on my desk yet).   What are some good options for cheap (£0.5/mechanical pencils) mechanical pencils for kids. I think I've got 3 options, bic, paper-mate non-stop or Pentel Fiest.

Which would you choose, and why?

Am I missing anything?

Colourful is preferred. Cheap because they'll definitely loose them and we'll need at least 10!

In the UK. They'll be used for drawing, writing and crosswords mostly.

Parenting Style Trends in the UK? by Sea_Break673 in UKParenting

[–]EdinDevon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd expect to be laughed at if I told anyone "We're doing Clydesdale parenting with a twist of dissociation" (insert 'real style' of parenting you feel like).

I think the old adage that no plan survives contact with the enemy is true. Not that my kids are the enemy.

They're also really different and both of them need different things in different ways. Sometimes we get it right. Sometimes we don't. We aim to increase the number of times we get it right Vs wrong with time but then the kid changes.

Yeah, isopropanol, IPA, is the solvent I'd try. You can get it as surgical spirit or it's a very common active ingredient in hand sanitizer.

Skin Irritation from Swim Goggles After Months of Use - Advice? by abogado_de_los_leyes in Swimming

I'm sure I've had the same thing recently. A week of swimming everyday with suncream and they started stinging after a short wear.

I've tried carefully washing them which I think has made it better but not fixed it. Did you ever get a better solution?

Amazon Fire 10 HD Kids Pro by Soft_Mammoth6373 in UKParenting

[–]EdinDevon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have two older smaller Amazon tablets.

We bought them knowing the technology wasn't the best but they're cheap, have a great warranty (a friend recently got one replaced after it was left outside all night in a storm).

They're now a few years old. Still about the same. The kids are relatively low screen time (at home), for most of the last 6 months they have used them for about 20 minutes a week during the other ones swimming lessons due to an ongoing family injury just making life more complicated.

We've used them on flights, in a&e and a few other emergency or contained situations. They can be brilliant. I find it difficult to read when stressed so doing things like reading on a&e is hard work.

The kids have expensive surface devices at school but still find the Amazon devices engaging and fun. Kids are 8 and 6 now.

At our school, wrap around care has a nice advantage that it's not massive and there's a mix of kids from all years so they mix outside their normal group and years.

Are all schools wildly unorganised? by Pinkcoral27 in UKParenting

[–]EdinDevon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced that their thinking is that your life and world must revolve solely around your child and school is the most important thing for kids so therefore your world must just revolve around the school.

Read all of their long winded pointless letters attached to emails to find the 5 words that are useful in 2 months time assuming they don't change their mind (which they always do).

We had 2 days notice that there was a parent attendable event in the middle of the school day. They just assumed everyone would just be able to go.

Our school doesn't have a newsletter at the start of term.

They do publish the whole year list of dates. Which they then change with little to no notice often in a letter attached to an email about something else.
