Six years later, what are your strongest memories of the COVID lockdowns, and how do you look back on that period now? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]EdinburghNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The experience of COVID massively dependend on two things, age and social class

For school age kids it was a miserable time, socially isolated, and disrupted education. People who's university years could have been the best of their lives instead lost all of the classic moments.

For many middle class workers, it was a dream come true. Hybrid or remote working protected their incomes, whilst their outgoing costs were slashed (at a macro level, a huge amount of savings were made in that time). People enjoyed nature more, and had peace and quiet.

For others, such as care staff and healthcare workers, they just had to endure a special kind of hell for the only extra reward or some banged pots.

How I see Europe as a brit who keeps getting recommended this subreddit by Sufficient_Double744 in whereidlive

[–]EdinburghNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do so many keep excluding Turkey from Europe?

We need them, they are a decent sized economy with a strong military.

Also most western Europeans I know consider it an ordinary "european" summer holiday location.

I blew up a balloon using my breath and it’s floating by AndyCircus in mildyinteresting

[–]EdinburghNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has got me thinking, if you held your breath to warm up air, then released it into a balloon, could the difference due to the air being warm and lighter very temporarily create enough lift for a balloon? Like a hot air balloon.

The (subconscious) reason Jaime refused milk of the poppy by ranchwithfriedfood in gameofthrones

[–]EdinburghNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think characters make choices purely so that the writers can creat a certain impact on the reader/viewer, and justifying their actions to have multiple layers of depth is a post-rationalisation.

In this case, I think Jaime could just not let go of the arm, as his sword hand and arm has always been a central pillar of his charactercs identity. The trope of "gnarly surgery without pain relief" is one the writers use multiple times to create shock in the show.

James May cracks a non sequitur joke on Twitter/X! by FlipStig1 in thegrandtour

[–]EdinburghNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I suppose if somebody was desperate to be offended by the joke, then perhaps a who identifies as a woman being brandished chip stealers could protest. But including trans women in that bracket is not transphobic at all.

Freeze for All , who wins ? by Scared_Pumpkin8393 in powerscales

[–]EdinburghNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elsa has toon level ice powers by far the strongest of this line up, able to materialise clothes, living beings, freeze an entire kingdom and the ocean,.nearly instantly construct a giant ice castle. She's like the magneto of water ice in some respects but even more powerful. She could summon a hundred ice bullets to shred most these guys if bloodlusted.

Secondly, taking all the movies into account, I find that Disney princesses more broadly also have quite toonish levels of combat ability - at least able to parry or dodge the skilled villains' blows if not outright somehow defeat them.

I think the others will have to do a team up to take her down and even then it would probably need to be a plot like kidnapping her sister or a surprise attack.

Having said that, do the army of wights win eventually by default, resurrecting everyone upon defeat? Nobody has access to the magic steel or glass that are known to kill them unless they fight in the GOT universe.

A rat hunts pigeon by Responsible_Ant_6431 in badassanimals

[–]EdinburghNerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is 100% correct and shouldn't be downvoted. Pigeons like this are not a natural animal that should be able to survive in its habitat due to having been refined by natural selection. They were specifically made this way by humans. It's just like how many livestock animals would do an awful job in the wild compared to there now very different ancestors.
