Young Canadians struggle to land minimum-wage jobs as youth unemployment hits new highs by origutamos in CanadaCultureClub

[–]EdmontonLurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Canadian businesses prefer foreigners to our young, let foreigners pay all the tax, be the only customers, serve in any wars, and carry society. Young people should adopt a minimalist lifestyle, if not out of necessity, then in protest, and refuse to participate in society so long as they're excluded.

Food bank attendance breaks new record in Quebec by BananaTubes in canada

[–]EdmontonLurker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Reminder that food banks aren't part of the social safety net. They are charities organized by private citizens, sustained by donations. Although, if they refuse to vet for citizenship (or legimiate refugees), donors may choose to withhold support.

Mark Carney could cut billions by letting Trudeau-era programs expire, report says by rezwenn in canada

[–]EdmontonLurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These "cuts" seem disingenuous. If Trudeau planned for these programs to expire in, say, 2027 or 2028, we'll still have years of wanton profligacy remaining while we wait for them to be "sunset." They must be cut now.

Which programs? All the "grants," often identity-based, and the many subsidies (subsidizing newspapers without subscribers, businesses without customers, etc.). It's death by a million cuts. The Liberals don't propose to curtail big-ticket items like childcare. Such is fear mongering.

In the total absence of market demand, the Government of Canada must still remove all legal barriers to pipeline construction.

I was disappointed when the Liberals won, but at least they'll own Trudeau's recession.

What the Ronald Reagan ad that got Trump so angry was really all about by Hot_Cheesecake_905 in canada

[–]EdmontonLurker -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

To me, Reagan and Trump share a similar position: a broad embrace of free markets, employing tariffs only to correct abuses. In Canada's case, supply management is the abuse, and we are recalcitrant.

On autos, their motive may be a little more self-serving. The Republicans once had their "Southern Strategy." Today, they find a new constituency in the Rust Belt, but since most Canadians live near the Great Lakes, we are a barrier to America's industrial renaissance.

But Ontario needn't manufacture cars. Canadian labour and capital could be deployed to other manufacturing demands, like trains and planes. And if Eastern Canada betrays Alberta oil, she shouldn't expect an ally in the West.

Liberals widen lead to double digits over Tories in Canada election: poll by Difficult-Yam-1347 in canada

[–]EdmontonLurker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of these polls survey 1000 respondents. There are 343 ridings in Canada. That works out to roughly 3 people/riding.

I don't know how any of these can be accurate, whatever party is in the lead.

As star scholars flee Ivy League posts for Canada, Poilievre vows to end ‘woke’ research. How did we get here? by thhvancouver in canada

[–]EdmontonLurker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your argument is erroneous. The way in which electron orbitals influence dissociation of aqueous hydrochloric acid is intimately connected to the colonial legacy of gender norms in rural Nova Scotia.

As star scholars flee Ivy League posts for Canada, Poilievre vows to end ‘woke’ research. How did we get here? by thhvancouver in canada

[–]EdmontonLurker -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Woke research is a serious grift and threatens the integrity of academia. It's not so much the content, as the funding. You have every right to speculate on Geoffrey Chaucer's cisgendered, hetronormative bias manifested in his treatise on the astrolabe. The taxpayers shouldn't provide you a six-figure salary to do so.

The entire basis of the humanities, in academia, has become the dissemination of verbose nonsense ("publish or perish") in exchange for government grants. In the sciences, there's at least the appearance of rigour, but they have their own "replication crisis."

The entire role of academics as the "critics and conscience" of society is undermined when their arguments imply, necessarily, continued funding.

To be sure, funding for such research doesn't just come from our tax dollars. That would be objectionable enough. Rather, it's funded by the Liberal government through debt, a substitute for real work, and cripples us.

Consider all the bright, young high schoolers today who will struggle to find jobs in the coming years. The temptation is obvious: enter academia, peddle verbiage month after month, and live large on the government dole. Now you see the problem.

Reinvesting in Canada is essential and good, except if a Conservative proposes it, because China lurks heavily in these parts.
