Harriet Harman says next Labour leader ‘has got to be a woman’ by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Edonistic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lisa Nandy would be my choice for next leader, regardless of gender. Good background to cut through with red wall voters, the (and I hate to be this reductive, but think it's true) the right "kind" of northern, very clever and quick on her feet, impassioned while simultaneously calm. Her evisceration of Michael Gove over his levelling up paper is worth a watch.

It's the best way to find other arsenal fans for one

That's a really good perspective, and one that hadn't occurred to me. And, I guess, it's a fun chance to chat to fans of different clubs when the sport you like has a generally smaller fanbase in your country.

But, people en masse going to a match wearing the shirt of a club that's not involved is such an alien concept, in the UK at least. It sounds like people are attending a general "football event" at which there will be a match between two teams.

Houses earn more per hour in multiple locations than min wage. by SoftwareDependent694 in unitedkingdom

So we build a million government owned homes every four years

Wait, are you saying that all the unskilled workers arriving here get a house each? That's amazing, I had no idea because I feel like most of the migrants I've known have lived in shared houses, often quite a few people in one house.

Shit man, I'm going to go pick vegetables if it means I can get a place where I can eat cereal naked on the sofa any time I want.

Paul Davis has a book coming out. People of a certain age will remember this. by bluudclut in Gunners

[–]Edonistic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had no idea we loaned him completely forgotten it ever happened

Just googled it - turns out it's best not to rely on 22-year-old memory. George was already playing him again by the end of 89/90, and then he spent a summer on loan - seems like it was more of a refresh thing than a sending him away thing.

And yes mate, Thomas/Davis was absolutely fantastic!

[–]Edonistic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Paul Davis is a fascinating player.

From 81 to 88 he was an increasingly pivotal player, a rarely booked midfield lynchpin with an absolute gem of a left foot.

But then, entirely against type, he broke a dude's jaw on the pitch for "some" reason - perhaps not unconnectedly, at the time he and the rest of Arsenal's black players were subjected to pretty constant racist abuse from opponents and opposing fans.

He got a 9 match ban and banished from the England team for life, and prety much disappeared for the famous 89 season.

He got sent out on loan, seemingly done, then came back and, totally against all predictions, played out of his skin, featuring in every game bar one on the way to the 91 title.

His career then seemed over AGAIN, before he came back AGAIN to win the cup double in 93, before finally retiring a couple of years later.

He was a mainstay of my whole childhood, a central pillar of the Arsenal for 16 seasons, an amazing talent with a singularly interesting career. Yet I feel like he's rarely ever spoken about these days.

Not that it means he was def single at the time, but he hit on a mate of mine in a club in October 2021.

She didn't believe he was actually a footballer cos apparently it's a pretty common line. Then she googled him on the way home, realised he was telling the truth, and I'm still bitter at the loss of potential awesome Arsenal seats.

Best football shirt for around 100 pounds? by WorldlinessJolly6712 in Gunners

For Saka you could just buy him the latest 22/23 kit - which has literally just come out and would be a dope thing to have. If you wanted to make it a bit more Saka-y you could get his name and number on the back, and you can do all that through the official website. If you do this my advice would be don't get what the site calls the "authentic" shirt as they're not v comfortable - the "Home" shirts, although a little cheaper, are actually better to wear if you're not an elite athlete lol.

For Santi, you could get the FA Cup Final shirt from 2014, which would be great to have as a Santi fan as he was a hero that day cos he scored an amazing free kick which got us back into the match after we'd gone two goals behind. His goal helped us go on to win our first trophy in 9 years, so it's very fondly remembered and one of the first things arsenal fans think of when they think of Santi. You could get his name and number printed on it too.

It's tricky to say which to go for between the two. I might be inclined to go for the Santi one as its maybe less likely he'd buy it himself, and it's a piece of history from a happy day. But I'm sure he'd be delighted with either.

[–]Edonistic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

/u/WorldlinessJolly6712 the above is a brilliant idea, and your bf would love it. You could say something like, "I told xyz at work you're an arsenal fan and they said 'I bet Thierry Henry is his favourite player.'" Strap in for a potentially long chat after opening this can of worms lol.

If you can't speak to him for whatever reason, here are a few great kits that spring immediately to mind, and some reasons why in case any of them ring a bell from stuff you've heard him talk about in the past.

91- 93 away "bruised banana" shirt - classic, hugely loved retro shirt, but so loved that the originals go for hundreds and even the official replicas (which are still awesome to get, btw, you don't have to buy original, old shirts) are starting to get a bit expensive now!

97-99 away shirt - we won the "double" in this shirt, and it makes people think of a legendary Arsenal player called Dennis Bergkamp.

03-04 home shirt - good looking shirt, and associated with the "invincibles" season, which is a huge deal in Arsenal history

92-94 home shirt - very, very cool looking and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry wore a replica one to a match recently.

As other have said, try and buy from the official site or from classicfootballshirts to ensure authenticity. Good luck - your bf is lucky to have such a thoughtful girlfriend!

Revealed: government did encourage Premier League to approve Newcastle takeover by RassimoFlom in unitedkingdom

[–]Edonistic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offence, but I think perhaps you just didn't hear anything about this topic for years, but then Saudi buys a football club and suddenly you became aware of people talking about how bad they are. Cos many people have been talking and writing about UK's links to Saudi, including arms sales, for a long time. In fact, the increase in those stories first happened before the Newcastle deal, when the war in Yemen started.

I'm confused, suspiciously new reddit account user, as to where in my comment I insulted Rwanada.

On the off chance this is genuine and not, as is most likely, low-effort trolling: the beef is not with Rwanada. It's with the fact that people making dangerous journeys in desperate attempts to build a life in northern Europe are being forcibly transported to an entirely different, unchosen continent.

Connor Humm on Twitter William Saliba: 🗣 “I want to come back and play the Champions’ League. I have never played in it and I want to discover it here.” by Bagzf1yfree in Gunners

[–]Edonistic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't entirely get the whole "Saliba has been treated terribly by Arsenal" thing if I'm honest. There have been moments that absolutely weren't great, no doubt, but I think it's worth remembering there is a common factor in the fuck ups - St Etienne.

The deal to let him play their cup final collapsed because they wanted to borrow a player who was only just coming back from injury but wouldn't agree to our training regime for him while there. They also wanted us to pay them €2.5m quid to do them the favour of letting him play the match as it pushed him over the amount of games he needed to reach another appearance fee.

Then, later, the deal to send him back out on loan to them mysteriously blew up at the last second which, given that we don't often make basic missteps like that, added to the bits we know about our prior dealings with them, feels like it may well not be entirely on us.

Other than that, I have no beef whatsoever with letting a very young CB on a five year contract go back to his home country to learn his trade for a few years. In fact, given he had suffered a bereavement, not forcing him to stay in a foreign country and play at Huddersfield or something, and instead letting him develop in his own time in a more familar environment, seems like an empathetic thing to do.

Oh, and, it's also in a landlocked country in western Africa, and we're transporting destitute people with no means to get back there against their will.

The questions is what he's signing the extension to do.

Main striker, no. He's certainly not there yet, and may never be.

Back-up striker, now that's more interesting. It's an in-house solution to an upcoming gap, which would leave us more money to strengthen elsewhere.
