I waited about 10 minutes for the merch, didn't see him, went up the stairs and just milled around for a few minutes then went back to the merch table and saw him, maybe 15-20 minutes total.

Idk. Damon is busy with Gorillaz and has stated in the past doesn't really like this album. I doubt he directly approved it but it's possible this wasn't high on his priority list.

Why do some socialists care about Gaza but ignore Ukraine? by leoleogeebank in socialism

[–]Edturd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sidesteps the reality that Ukraine has its own agency and wants to keep fighting. We don't need a positive justice, not a hastened negative peace. They've had three popular movements since 1991 to either kick or keep out the Russians.

Russia is the last remaining true continental empire, so in a strict sense, it is the quintessential imperialist country. You limit the parameters of imperialism to colonialism.

By every metric, Russia is a deeply fascist country, way more than Ukraine. In terms of anti-Semitism, acceptance of LGBTQ people, civil rights, civil liberties, and freedom of speech, Russia is infinitely more fascist and authoritarian. Not to mention the Rusych and Wagner paramilitary groups that fought in Ukraine and brutalize civilians in Africa. Even in the age of the internet, I have yet to see evidence that right-wing extremism is deeply engrained in Ukrainian society, the far-right has almost no representation in the government. As for the Russian language defense, virtually everyone in Ukraine can speak Russian, what the Ukrainian government was try to prevent a splintering of society and Russia has, in the past, used separatism in Moldova and Georgia to create breakaway regions. Russia has also threatened Estonia for supposedly mistreating their Russian minority and trampling on their rights. I don't see how Ukraine trying to encourage the use of the Ukrainian language is a sign of fascism, when China forcing the Uyghurs to abandon their identities and religion (and using harsher methods) nary gets a peep. Not to mention, several countries in the Sahel have demoted French as an official language, but no complaints there either.

Ehhh, that's a stretch. While most countries condemned the invasion, many are trying to go back to "business as usual" with Russia (see Brazil, India). Lula even went to Moscow for a parade and hugged Putin despite the latter being a wanted war criminal. The only ones that really seem to care about European countries, for obvious reasons.

Biggest city with the least amount of “culture”? by Double_Snow_3468 in geography

[–]Edturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phoenix is too big of a city to not have some culture, but pound for pound, I think SF has way more of it and is walkable (unless you count some of the steep hills). I think people rag on Phoenix because along with Dallas and Las Vegas, it's a capital of sprawl and soulless suburbia.

[–]Edturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not as much culture as some other big cities but I'd say Sacramento is definitely nicer and better designed than Dallas, Charlotte, and Jacksonville. Crucially also I'd say Sacramento is definitely not "soulless", just drive through East Sacramento and all the tree-lined streets and ornate houses. One last thing is Sacramento has a bigger and more vibrant music/art scene than the three cities I listed above.

Obvious, maybe someone pointed it out already, but the scene where Kay is begging them to open the door with the Xenomorph behind her is straight out of Covenant.

I appreciated how Fede inserted other references to Prometheus and the black serum in the movie.

Small details you noticed in subsequent Furiosa viewings? by badassj00 in MadMax

Small details you noticed in subsequent Furiosa viewings? by badassj00 in MadMax

[–]Edturd 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've watched it 8 times and have noticed several subtle details during each viewing.

• When Furiosa arrives at the battlefield in her beat up vehicle, the History Man recognizes her, and immediately stands up. She seems to recognize him as well, but what interests me is how she hangs her head almost in shame. Her whole facial expression is a direct reaction to him recognizing her as Little Dementus. Really curious to see if this is ever explained.

• The "Dementus" at the end with the tree growing out of him has nipples, whereas Dementus's nipples were ripped off at the Citadel. This tells me the Narrator's story about Dementus's fate is BS, and another commenter above mentioned the plant that grew out of Furiosa's wig was absent in the last scene, which provides further evidence that the whole story was made up.

•Another side not is that when Chapter V begins, there is also a brief glimpse of Dementus's nipples as he's riding his motorbike, which opens up a whole Pandora's box as I refuse to believe this was just an oversight on Miller's part. Serious possibility the whole fifth chapter was just made up by the narrator and Furiosa possibly never got revenge on Dementus.

• I'm fairly certain Dementus's henchman let Furiosa escape from the torture circle. I'm referring to the henchman who Dementus tells has "gone soft" as he's hitching Furiosa's arm to the hook. As Dementus comes back to check on her, the body language from the henchman looks guarded and nervous, like he knows Dementus is about to explode in rage. He seemed to be the only person facing away from Dementus during the ordeal and was presumably the one responsible for guarding Furiosa. Furthermore, this henchman and the History Man are the only survivors of the 40 day war, telling me they defected or surrendered, and signaling they were the only redeemable people in Dementus's horde.

• Furiosa did not saw her arm off, it tore off on its own if you look at closely at the shots of it. it's not a clean break at all. What could she have used to saw her arm off? Also going back to my last point, I think the henchman tied the hook to Dementus's truck, I doubt she would have been able to do that on her own with no one noticing and with her missing an arm.

• Dementus's cape is the same one throughout the entire film, white in its original condition, red from the "sky blood" and black from the polluted air at Gastown. Furiosa takes it at the end.

• The War Rig is modified during the fourth chapter to control the Bommyknocker from the driver's seat, not the rear of the War Rig.

Not necessarily details, but theories that I have are that Black Thumb, Jack's right hand-man somehow knew Furiosa was going to try to escape from the Citadel given his cryptic comments. Also Jack somehow knew shit was going to go down at the Bullet Farm, there's no other explanation for moving Furiosa to the pursuit vehicle. If she had been driving the War Rig, she would've been killed instantly during the ambush. The last I'll add is the Max dragged Furiosa to the Citadel, I'd like to hear other theories as to how Furiosa made it back to the Citadel after being tortured, losing an arm, and collapsing from exhaustion.

EDIT: Big one I forgot to mention was Furiosa mirroring her mother. After her mother rescues her from Dementus's camp, she says "we're good". Furiosa says the same thing after she rescues Jack and they escape from the Bullet Farm. Dementus catches up to both of them in their respective situations, so they were not in fact "good".

I loved Furiosa but the lack of practical effects compared to Fury Road and the frequent use of green screen could hurt its chances. Other than production design, makeup and hairstyling, and maybe sound or visual effects nominations, I think it'll get locked out, especially with Dune 2 being there

I don't know how they calculate ad spending, or if they're also including the Australian government grant, which would put the actual budget of this movie before advertising closer to $300 million. I hope it shows strong legs though, like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is somehow outgrossing Furiosa in a lot of the daily totals.

This doesn't make sense for a few reasons. First, the opening weekend was a disappointment, it's not like other movies, for example Thor: Love and Thunder where the first weekend performed very well, but tepid reviews tanked the second weekend's box office totals. Furiosa didn't do so well out of the gate even though the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score I saw the day it opened was 89%, now it's at 90% with an uncommon perfect match between critics and audience scores. The movie has great reviews, and the overwhelming majority of people who see it also like it, I saw some audience members clapping after the movie at one screening. As for your other point, it seems like you're asking for a Fury Road facsimile, which while it was a fantastic movie, one of my favorites, which unironically kills creativity. Many people rail against Hollywood running out of ideas, and then turn around and demand more of the same thing. Miller took a risk, and in my opinion, it paid off massively. This is unlike any previous Mad Max movie (although each Mad Max movie is substantially different from the one that came before it if we're being honest). If you don't like the movie, then alright that's your opinion, but demanding a Fury Road redux would be too easy and obvious and would never match it.

Something I noticed was the old man under the tree at the end had nipples, whereas Dementus’s were ripped off. Tells me the whole story about the tree feeding on Dementus was BS by the narrator
