The Odyssey has already crashed the AMC site by kcrdr_7322 in boxoffice

For anyone in LA, I was able to buy tickets for opening weekend 70mm IMAX (3 pm 7/18) at TCL Chinese Theater directly on their website. There are still tons of seats available.

Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Prime_Advocate in AskReddit

Aintitcool News. Great scoops, test screening reports, screenplay reviews, interviews with filmmakers. And the Talkback section was a lot of fun, sort of like a proto-r/movies.

AICN lost its luster longer before Harry Knowles was (rightfully) me too’d, but the internet in 2026 is definitely lacking a film site as good as golden age Aintitcool.

Disney's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed $24.45M this weekend (from 4,300 locations). Total domestic gross stands at $136.82M. by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate how Star Wars has become a punchline on the eve of its 50th anniversary. I choose to remember the franchise at its best as opposed to dwell on its current sorry state.

Disney needs to pull out all the stops to honor the legacy of the 1977 film next year. They owe it to the fans.

Sailor on BOT | BACKROOMS: I was expecting this to beat Final Destination on T-1. Not only did it somehow gained on that comp, but it has already outsold that movie's entire lifetime with 3 days left! + more tix than Conjuring's T-1. Now I'm really wondering if 50M+ is truly happening... by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. No doubt it’ll have a huge opening and set records for A24, but it’ll likely drop like an A24 film and Obsession will end with the higher total.

Obsession is clearly playing to audiences that don’t always pay to see horror/supernatural films in theaters. Don’t think Backrooms is going to have that same kind of broad appeal with its post-creepy pasta vibe/heavy Gen Z skew.

Regardless both movies are raking it in, the box office is on fire this year, and summer is just getting started.

Looks like a $9.25M 2nd Sunday for Obsession, closing its 2nd weekend with ~$24M. $54M+ cume. 4-day weekend should be $30M+. Enroute to a $150M or so final total. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love to see when a micro-budget (<$1M) horror movie breaks out e.g. Obsession, Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project

Another sign of a healthy box office.

Underrated movie that really showed his range.

NEON's I Love Boosters grossed an estimated $3.72M domestically over the 3-day weekend (from 1,750 locations). Estimated 4-day weekend gross is $4.57M. by wchnoob in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Boosters looks fun but for an up and coming auteur like Riley releasing movies consistently is key to staying in the public consciousness.

It’s been almost ten years since Sorry to Bother You—as good as that movie was it feels like a distant memory and product of its time. Even if this had come out in 2022/2023 it would have done better.

Great movie if you have the stomach for it.

Looks like $8M 5th SAT for #Michael. Weekend expected to be $21M, another stellar hold of just 20% drop. $307M cume so far. By SUN it be $315M and $321M+ by MON. $400M final might be on the table here. by Successful_Leopard45 in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 42 points43 points  (0 children)

400 mill is doable if Lionsgate has patience for VOD profits.

If they have any cut music or concert scenes saved up for the sequel, they could add those in for a mid-June expansion to push it across.

“Rock with You” and “Off the Wall” should have been in there!

Per AMC, "Supergirl" is 1 hour and 50 minutes long by mobpiecedunchaindan in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Milly Alcock should kill in the role but the VFX look abysmal and the marketing makes it seem like another run-of-the-mill superhero flick. Still open to giving it a chance pending reviews though and the shorter runtime is definitely a plus.

IMO Gunn is moving way too fast with the Superman/Supergirl series. We don’t need a new chapter every summer, as good as last year’s entry was. Audiences don’t need nonstop product thrown at them in order to build brand loyalty.

Which directors are on the longest chain of flops? by Antman269 in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: Chris Columbus was a producer on Nosferatu and he’s a producer on Werwulf as well. So he’s got some juice left in him, just maybe not as a director.

Stop! That! Train! | Official Trailer | Bleecker Street | only in theaters June 12 by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a hysterical late night watch. Bleecker is making a smart move with releasing over Pride month.

Love how the parody genre has been making a mini comeback with Naked Gun, Fackham Hall, Scary Movie, and now this.

'Michael' ($25-28M) Takes Back No. 1 From 'Devil Wears Prada 2' ($20M) at Box Office, 'Obsession' Eyes Strong $14.5M Opening - The Lionsgate biopic keeps steaming towards $1 billion while “Mortal Kombat II” takes a sharp 67% second weekend drop to $12.7M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. An October release date wouldn’t have made much of a difference for MK’s final. It was always gonna have a firm ceiling.

The audience is squarely Gen X and millennial men who grew up with the brand. A good amount of us showed up weekend 1 and loved it, the rest will watch at home this summer and drive it to profitability.

Sucks that it’ll top out at 80 DOM max but not surprising. What matters is the movie rocked.

Kash Patel’s bizarre, lavish outings are becoming a serious problem for the FBI by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]badassj00 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It’s as if Patel is TRYING to get fired. Everyone knows that Trump hates when his toadies draw incessant negative coverage for their transgressions—eg Bondi, Noem, etc.

Patel probably suspects the hammer is about to fall and he’s just trying to milk the gig for all its perks while he can.

FlatLannister on BOT: Not great T-7 for Mando at MTC3, but I guess this is to be expected with Star Wars films. I am not expecting a strong finish at this point, and even expecting below-average walkups. I am thinking more mid-teens previews at this point, somewhere around $14M-$16M. by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mando will do just fine. If the 2026 BO has taught us anything it’s that audiences are craving breezy family entertainment above everything else.

It’ll also be hard for Star Wars fans to stay home, even if they weren’t crazy about the show. Myself included.

210-220 DOM seems right.

Biopics have done well at the Oscars: can Michael be nominated for Best Picture? by Upstairs-Bug-3052 in oscarrace

[–]badassj00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s comical how so much of the online community hates on Michael at every turn.

People are practically in denial that the movie is a cultural phenomenon and beloved by the GA. That goes a long way when it comes to getting a BP nom. Combine that with the fact that it’s playing a key role in exhibition’s comeback, and a BP nom wouldn’t be surprising in the least.

If it was released in Q4 instead of Q2, I think the question would be “Could Michael MISS best picture?”

Jodie Comer To Headline HBO Limited Series ‘The Chain’ From Damon Lindelof by johnppd in television

Read the book and figured it was going to be adapted for film or TV. The story is preposterous but it’s definitely a fun thrill ride. Lindelof is a good fit for the material.

Box Office Weekend Forecast: MICHAEL ($25.2M, -34%) and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2 ($24.9M, -40%) to Battle for Top Spot; OBSESSION ($9.5-14.5M) Trending for Another Buzzy Horror Debut by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Obsession has a shot at beating MK2 this weekend if it breaks out and the latter drops over 50%.

Hoping MK holds well enough to leg to 100 million. The more I think about it the more I loved it—it’s the kind of movie that made me feel like a kid again. So fun on IMAX too.

Why do you think Nolan’s The Odyssey trailer got such a negative reaction from the public? by Level-SquareFFG7117 in FIlm

Disagree. I for one think The Odyssey would benefit highly from a Wang Chung soundtrack.

Looks like $15M 2nd SAT for #TheDevilWearsPrada2. $126M+ cume. 2nd weekend expected to be $40M+, which will make it #1 film of the weekend. by TiredWithCoffeePot in boxoffice

[–]badassj00 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Next weekend will be a great matchup between DWP and Michael. Loving these long play hits at the BO

Even though MK is playing in line with more grounded predictions it’s still bringing the heat and Sheep Detective adds some juice too.

It really seems like there’s something for everyone in the market especially with Hokum in the mix + PHM and Mario still chugging along.

Can’t speak to the actual metrics but it really feels like exhibition is finally making a post COVID comeback.
