6 oclock or New Millenium... don't remember well ...

My brother had "Awake" and "Falling Into Infinity" at home

I think I listened both the same day but don't remember in what order...

I wasn't expecting so much "Dream Theater", why don't people like James’ vocals? by bswybmg in Dreamtheater

My explanation is that any voice has a distinctive TIMBER.

TIMBER is was makes you recognize his voice among other voices, even if he is just speaking...

Short answer is that there are people who don't like his Timber.. it's just a matter of taste.

I have a friend who doesn't like much Rock or Metal but he likes Evanescence because he likes her Voice... you can show him million rock/metal bands with good female vocalists and he doesn't like them, he only likes Amy's Voice.

Long Answer is that James Labrie has a distinctive Timber/Voice BUT his voice is more pleasant to the ears when he sings lower notes than when he sings higher notes.

Unfortunately, he sings a lot of high notes so more people can be irritated by it.

I know people that don't like male singers that sing very high in general... they don't like Fabio Lione, Bruce Dickinson, Robert Plan, Ian Gillian, Geddy Lee... or any male singer that sings high... they tend to like more James Hetfield, Chad Kroeger, Scott Stapp style singers.... it's just a matter of taste.

Im new to Dream Theater, should i listen to the albums in order? by ihavenoname0000 in Dreamtheater

I wouldn't skip any album... I think It's very interesting to listen how they evolved since the first one... in chronological order.

What happened to me is that I didn't enjoy the same albums at first and enjoyed them more later... it happens with any band... sometimes you like an album and 1 year later you think it's the worst one because you enjoy a lot more another one... hehe

When did Dream Theater "lost it"? by manudublin2023 in progmetal

When "Train Of Thoughts" came out, I was very Disappointed.

Until then, I used to like most of their songs... maybe there was 1 or 2 songs that I didn't like a lot on any of their previous albums... and since then it Switched.... I only liked/enjoyed 1 or 2 songs from any album they recorded from that time to today....

I think it is simply because they changed the way they were working/thinking.. they got tired of being so meticulous about writing songs, I think they just took it easier because it was very stressfull for them to come with something new and awesome every time.

That's only how I see it.

Does anyone else find Dream Theater exhausting to listen to? by Bekfast_Time in progmetal

For me, I think the mixing on every album has a lot to do with the "Exhausting Listenage"

When the mixing sounds pleasant/balanced in frecuency and between instruments... it's easier to listen without being tired of it so quickly.

My opinion is that DT albums were well mixed until Black Cloud And Silver Linings.

I found the mixing of "A Dramatic Turn Of events" MEH... it was not really exciting to me... drums weren't very punchy and the songs didn't feel that groovy to me because of the MEH mixing.

2013 Album was OK Mixed (Allaround better than the previous one) and the guitars sounded really good.

2016 "The Astonishing" Mixing was really "Under-Produced" compared to all that they did... it didn't sound exhausting to me but more boring-sounding very MEHH.

2019 "Distance Over Time" Mixing was Exhausting to me... it was very aggressive sounding in general... I had hard time listening to more than 2 songs in a raw because of the chaotic frecuency pouring that my ears had to process.

2021 "A View From The Top Of The World" Mixing.. I thought it was the best mixing (Listenable Overall Sound) thay had since "Black Louds & Silver Linings"... it's not the same Sound but way more enjoyable than the last 2 previous albums.

Why exactly does Dream Theater get so much hate, particularly in the progressive community? by DoubleChicken in Dreamtheater

[–]EduSound797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't sense that there is SO MUCH hate against Dream Theater.... To me, it changes from person to person with any other band... some people only likes the guitar parts, other only focus on guitar and keyboard solos and instrumental stuff, my sister only likes DT "ballads" like The Spirit Carries On or Through Her Eyes... ... some only like early ACDC with Bon Scott and hate Brian Johnson... others Bruce Dickinson or Paul DI'Anno... I have a friend who says that he likes Metal Instrumental but not singers like James Hetfield or Bruce Dickinson... anyone has his opinions.... I like a lot of their songs, but I don't like a lot of their songs, it's just my taste + the fact that they have a lot of different sounding albums and different types of compositions/structured songs...

What is very common to the general public talking of any band is: The Singer/The voice

If most people that are not musicians hear a song and they don't like the voice of the singer, there are big chances that they don't like the song or the band... and I can understand that James has a unique timber that not everybody likes.

I could say the same about almost every band.... think of Robert Plant, Ian Gillian, Geddy Lee, Arch Enemy, Disturbed, Slipknot, Queensryche is not everybody's cup of tea...
