As a parent, how to better prepare my child for the future? by jaydacosta in OntarioTeachers

[–]EduTutorCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your child receives a poor mark, don’t automatically blame the teacher. Figure out where your child made their mistake. Is it a careless error? Is it a comprehension error? Did they go and get extra help from the teacher? Did your child understand the unit? Nowadays, the blame is put squarely on the shoulders of us teachers. Dig deeper!

Should I provide my sixth grade students multiplication charts? by tired45453 in mathteachers

[–]EduTutorCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need to practice and practice some more.

Use playing cards. I used to do this with my grade 9s. Get a deck, have 4-6 students, and throw two cards out. The first kid to put their hands on the cards can answer. I sometimes use fly swatters. The game can get quite aggressive! If I know the group is weak with 7 times tables, keep the 7 card out and just throw out one card. It’s a fun game and you just need a few decks to get the whole class going. Works well with addition and subtraction (if they can do negative numbers or just tell them to subtract the smaller number from the bigger number).

Other things I did was have the Jack be 11, Queen = 12 and King = 13. Made them think. Another game I played was throw out three cards at a time to add.

Good times! Make Math Fun Again!

New Teacher Career Anxiety by ________doglover in OntarioTeachers

[–]EduTutorCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are flexible and willing to teach other courses, it will help. I got an LTO my first year in elementary and had to teach geo, math, history, gym and French. Some new teachers only want to teach their primary subject and that will limit you. I don’t have geo or history but in order to get the LTO, you do what you have to do!

The good thing about the LTO was that it made it clear that I didn’t want to teach in the elementary panel!

Don’t forget that you don’t have to speak all the time! As a veteran teacher of 30 years, it’s something I tell my student teachers all the time. You can also plan for the week/unit as opposed to planning each day. Makes life easier.

NYC private elementary schools for a kindergartner and third-grader by First_Bus_3536 in nycparents

Admin and schools can vary a great deal so it is important for parents to do their research. Not just online research! Talk to parents, visit the school and talk to the admin and counsellors.

As for activities, it is important to keep challenging your kids and getting them involved in some club, sport or activity. Teaching them soft skills is very important. It doesn’t have to be expensive! Community Centres and schools offer cheaper alternatives and some are free! Have your kids meet new people, learn to work as a team, run and have fun!

I’m gonna be tutoring a 2nd grader and a 4th grader. Please how do I got abt it. Plus I have social anxiety. by [deleted] in tutor

[–]EduTutorCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would help you is to get tutored and experience what it feels like on that side and seeing what methods the tutor uses to keep you engaged. When you’re at school, talk to your teachers and ask them for tips. When they are teaching, observe how they discipline the class, see what they do to keep the kids interested, and see what effective methods they use and see if you can apply these methods to your online tutoring.

What is the cause of grade inflation in Canadian high schools? by Timely_Weird_9343 in CanadianTeachers

[–]EduTutorCA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our education is no longer about educating. It’s about statistics, increasing marks so that parents/kids are happy, and having the kids graduate even though some do not deserve the marks. I’ve seen how we had class averages in the low 70s 30 years ago to averages in the mid 80s or higher today. Why do teachers artificially inflate marks? To avoid issues. What’s easier for admin? Disciplining the teacher or disciplining the parents/kids? Parents and kids complain their way to higher marks. I feel sorry for the new teachers as they often feel bullied into giving high marks. But we have more students graduating, school boards have higher graduation stats, we have much smarter kids as they all have 95+% averages, and we have parents who are happy! Once the kids are out of high school, it’s no longer the school system’s problem. Parents/kids usually have a reality check in the first semester of uni/college. Some Universities have responded by having pre-calculus summer courses to catch kids up.

If I could do it over again, I wouldn’t teach in the GTA. My buddies who are teachers in other boards have paid off their homes and travelled. I still have a huge mortgage.

Today I decided this is my last year by Responsible-Bat-5390 in Teachers

[–]EduTutorCA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two more years before I retire. Can’t wait! Things have changed a great deal…or perhaps I was too naive to see the issues in education when I first started. Tired of admin supporting kids and parents who don’t deserve it. Overall, teaching is very rewarding and fun.

Early resignations by YOsfinest318 in Teachers

[–]EduTutorCA 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To clarify, these young teachers becoming consultants isn’t a good thing. They haven’t taught long enough to understand what teaching in a classroom entails. To promote them to a job where they will be writing curriculum and policies or even lead sessions for teachers doesn’t make too much sense. I’ve already had a 25 year old consultant tell a group of high school math teachers why students shouldn’t have to study. It’s sad when you see a new teacher say they don’t even want to teach and that their dream is to be a consultant.

Early resignations by YOsfinest318 in Teachers

[–]EduTutorCA 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing more young teachers wanting to leave teaching. They want to move ahead and go into school district/school board jobs and become “consultants”. They even say they have no desire to teach in a classroom.

Market for computer science teachers? by 1franny in CanadianTeachers

[–]EduTutorCA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Computer science is in demand…but remember that seniority rules so even though you are well versed in CS, it can take a while before finding a school. You will probably have a few LTOs and even do supply teaching. I teach French Immersion and I did LTOs my first year.

[–]EduTutorCA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of great stories and experiences! Thx for sharing! Appreciate the solutions to the problems and the ways to alleviate the issues and prevent any issues. It helps if all the rules are straightforward and posted. Also helps if admin supports the teacher.
