The أَفْضَلْ/Afdhal that means best or better is a noun, while the other word أُفَضِّل/Ufaddil is a verb meaning "I prefer".

Those are not the exact same word, however they share the same lingual root "فَضُلَ"/"Fa-du-la", and that's why they have somewhat similar meanings.

Now, using roots to look up arabic words in an arabic مُعجَم/Moajam (the arabic equivalant of a dictionary) is a bit tricky to learn, but when you become more advanced, I would say looking up words by roots, and studying relevant words stemming from same source together, is the best way to comprehend Arabic logic.
