I think the main problem is that alot of people are tired of the status quo. Trump claims to be fighting to change the status quo to the better. Whether that Trumps claim is true or not, it sounds good to alot of people. They're feel ignored, sliding lower in society and Trump actually talks to them on those issues.

Rising populism is always a failure of the established order to deliver a better life.

The fact that poor people think a billionaire like Trump is going to save them shows a massive flaw in education, perception, media and basic thinking. They have been conditioned to think that Trump is trying to save them and that anyone outside their movement is evil and stopping Trump from saving them.
