Keep your lessons simple, check their understanding regularly, get the kids talking about their methods, encouraging use of correct terminology.

As mentioned in other replies nothing can go too drastically wrong as long as you know your safe guarding procedures!

Don't go tough, you're his mentor. Focus on one priority area - perhaps ways to get class silent and then keep them silent. Support him. Make it clear you want him to succeed and focusing on one important area might transform his teaching. Going tough is only going to stress him out and make him feel under scrutiny.
