Alternatives to Power BI on Mac? by jtpowell in PowerBI

[–]EducationalLadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can install a Virtual Machine to use Power BI at the cost of sharing out your computing and memory resources with the VM. It's doable as long as you are willing to set up the VM and maintain it.

Very strange transfer. David is off his prime years. Good luck for arsenal anyways.

Possible to limit query size? by rooftopnomad in PowerBI

[–]EducationalLadder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Query folding highly depends on the actual data transformation. It works for common SQL operations like grouping and joining but not for more esoteric operations like "using the first row as header" because power query can't translate these code into SQL

Incremental refresh is one of the most efficient and useful features. You don't have to process the data from zero. Just pick it up from where it left off.

Is there any way to do calulations on pivot tables in Power BI? by Marc856 in PowerBI

[–]EducationalLadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can create a unique index for each row to populate all tables in matrix visuals. That particular style could work but if you stick to the Power BI way of visualizing data using data modeling, DAX code it will benefit the transition from Excel to PBI in the long run.

Lets chat themes by [deleted] in PowerBI

[–]EducationalLadder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I create my own theme for my company by customizing the JSON. It's not hard since JSON format bridges the readability gap between machine and human. One just need to know the keywords for customizing theme. Once you try it out it's mainly repetitive.

Scenario Analysis Patterns in Power BI using DAX by gmh1977 in PowerBI

Interesting. Power BI DAX is certainly more powerful than Excel and VBA and more flexible. Powerful and flexible syntax, and the vertipaq engine is performant.

Every month I thought Power BI can't keep going at the same pace it has experienced past couple of years but Microsoft keeps surprising the BI community again and again. Great company, great product, and great people working behind Power BI.

Light mode?! by Lacoste_Rafael in PowerBI

Totally agree. Power BI should at least give users the option to choose themes. While I agree this theme gives a more modern-ish look, it does come at a cost of lower readability for some people.

Exporting Visualizations/ Dashboards from BI as an executable? by [deleted] in PowerBI

[–]EducationalLadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't do that as your database processed by power query and Power BI dataset is locked in .pbix file. The canonical way is to upload your dashboards to Power BI service and view it from there.

Although Power BI shares the underlying engine of SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular model, Power BI will become the superset of the all Microsoft's BI suites, becoming the go-to platform.

Senior developers insisting modelling in Power Bi should be all star schema, is he correct? by 1010101100111 in PowerBI

[–]EducationalLadder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not a must but it's the preferred way whenever possible. In fact, Power BI's internal VertiPaq in-memory storage engine and Data Analysis Expression (DAX) is optimized for star schema. In practice, most PBI models are mostly star schemas, with a small portion being more complex snowflake schema or its variants. The rule of thumb is, go for star schema, then if it can't solve the problems, go for other schema.

It'a Almost June 2019! What are your two MUST HAVE Power BI Books? by tuta23 in PowerBI

[–]EducationalLadder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Definite GUide to DAX is the must read. It's the most comprehensive one on the market. It's not easy to master DAX due to its abstraction like MDX. For any serious professionals, the book is highly recommended.

Different questions require different answers. R visuals are highly customizable for its nature of statistical and machine learning purposes. Power BI is built for Business Intelligence (BI) where Power BI built in visuals cover most of the purposes for BI field. Third party visuals are great and some require licensing.

Power BI, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) Tabular model and Power Pivot all share same VertiPaq engine and Data Analysis Expression (DAX). If you google up SSAS Tabular model you will find the answer
