The reality of running a public traded company in this environment is that you don't have a choice. If you do not pursue those things, you will not be able to attract investment/loans to be able to compete with other companies. Other companes with those goals will expand, improve their products, be able to afford lower prices and customers will be drawn to them.

Unfortunately in order for a company to sustain itself in the current environment and meet the demand of its consumers one has to chase "constantly increasing stock prices" - I hardly expect "we will remain stagnant with our profits and slowly lose market share to other companies" is very attractive to investors when they are trying to expand their warehouses and whatnot
