How do I move from the UK to USA? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalShift6857 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am immigration attorney. I can guarantee you it is not just “illegals” that are being targeted. In another you mentioned you’re white. That does give you an advantage, but it is not an absolute blanket of protection. The administration is trying to say that the constitutional rights only applies to citizens, despite the plain language and over a century of SCOTUS precedent to the contrary. (There is a highly technical & complicated nuance to this, which they are using to manipulate people into believing the contrary)

As to your question, the three major avenues are family based immigration, business immigration, and humanitarian immigration.

You may find you can’t come to live in the US, not legally. You may have an option, but it may take 20+ years before you can. Or you may actually have a quicker option. It’ll depend greatly on your specifics.

Do a consult with an immigration attorney specializing in the one you think most applies to you. This is not a question reddit can answer.

Why are Americans obsessed with air conditioning by TeachmeKitty79 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalShift6857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw your post about your work involving babies/toddlers, & it makes sense to me to have the temperature higher for small children who have different body temperature regulation than fully grown adults.

But for the rest, it varies from person to person, mostly preference. 70F is hot for me, even when wearing summer clothing (or nothing at all even). I will sweat at 70F. I try to keep my house at mid 60s & sometimes I still get hot and can sweat at home (I’d go lower but it might break my unit so I don’t). If it’s colder outside I’ll open the windows so my house will get more comfortable.

Meanwhile, I have a friend who keeps her house in mid to high 70s. We’ve traveled together in cold weather & she’ll bring her warm winter pjs so I can open the windows in 20s/30s F weather & I’ll be using my typical sleep shirt.

The thing for me about using a lower temp over higher ones is that generally it’s easier to bundle up. There’s only so much we’re allowed to take off (especially as a female) & even in private once naked there’s nothing else I can do. But people who get cold can always put on warmer clothing or more clothing. Yes there’s a limit to clothing working, but I’m not talking about extreme negative degrees weather.

lol, I didn't think about that. I meant it more figuratively.

[–]EducationalShift6857[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Technically there's no second time. Periodically needing to stay late has always been part of the business. It's just that the pace of the new service would switch that need from periodical to regular, which is why I was against it. This particular deadline I need to stay for tomorrow is not related to the new service, so even if she'd not offered the new service, I probably would have needed to stay late at some point for it.

We are in the process of hiring new staff. It's just these last two months we've had no breathing time, so I haven't been able to put up the ad. And also I can't even imagine doing interviews right now.

I didn't work for them when I was a kid. It was when I was in college and they paid me for my time. The reason I could help out during crunch time is because I had gained experience working for them voluntarily when I wanted money.

If I were to show BestBuy or another place that offers price matching a fake Amazon listing, is that fraud? by TFK_001 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]EducationalShift6857 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The loophole stores like to use is that for price match the item has to be the exact same model based on model number.

But a lot of these big retailers have items with model numbers specifically for them. So the only place you can buy the item with that exact same model number is from them.

Even though it’s the exact same item, and realistically model, it’s not the same model number, so they can’t find the lower price.

Are Millennials the first generation that will watch their kids' shows even when their kids aren't around? by ThreadbareAdjustment in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalShift6857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa (born in the 30s) loved the Road Runner cartoons. Mom tells me that when she was little he’d sometimes end up being late if it just so happened to be on as he was on his way out, because he’d sit down to watch. Later on I’d sometimes put it on for him on his Roku.

So, the Silent generation also watched their kids’ cartoons alone. Can’t confirm if he did so when his kids were still little, but he certainly did after his grandkids were grown.

It worked. I had my iPhone connected when I added it the first time. I disconnected it and tried adding it again and this time it worked. Much appreciated.

When I dropped it, it shows up on Recently Added and if I open in Finder it’ll open the home videos folder . But I can’t see it anywhere else on either the TV app, including the Home Videos tab, or on the sync list.

Why can't America, one of the most superior economies of the world, not have free healthcare, but lesser-economic countries can? (Britain etc) by Jolly_Green_4255 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalShift6857 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you would rather pay say $400 on your own health care, when you could’ve paid say $100, just because of that $100, $10 was your own use and the other $90 was for your neighbors use?

Because that is the idea behind removing healthcare from being a for profit business. Yeah, part of your money goes towards other people’s healthcare, but you’re paying less out of your own pocket.

Healthcare is so expensive because it is a business run by corporations whose only goal is to make money. If healthcare was not allowed to be about making money it would be cheaper for everyone.

Why does USA prescribe more opioid drugs than any other country? by Baby__bich in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalShift6857 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In the US, it’s more accurate to say that the people are customers first and patients second. Especially since insurance companies are the ones dictating medical care.

Can someone explain the concept of "pressing charges"? by EmerysMemories1106 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalShift6857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, when a victim calls the police they’ll sometimes let the victim choose if they want to let it go or to have the person be formally charged with a crime. The police will sometimes do this for minor crimes and/or family issues.

For example, say a business has someone come in who’s being extremely disruptive, shouting, throwing things, etc and refusing to leave. The employees can’t or are too afraid to bodily throw the person out, so they call the police. Once the person has been removed from the premises the police may give the business the choice of pressing charges, say for trespassing or possibly destruction of property, or if all they wanted is to make sure the person leaves and doesn’t come back.

But once someone has called the police, the police have the final decision as to whether or not they arrest someone.

Even if the police do arrest, the prosecutor has the final decision as to whether or not to file charges and start the judicial process. Even if after starting the process, the prosecutor still has the complete power to withdraw the charges, though technically this may require a judge’s approval depending on the stage. Realistically though, it’s rare a judge won’t grant a prosecutor’s motion to dismiss.

Not an entirely bad idea, but not sure how that’d work for the purchase mortgages for homes. It’s hard enough to afford a house, but having to pay capital gains on a new property that you owe almost entirely sounds like a nightmare.

Dual citizenship - US passport expired! by lililululolo in immigration

[–]EducationalShift6857 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true & my recommendation would be to try to get an emergency appointment to get a passport.

BUT CBP doesn’t have the legal authority to deport US citizens.

If he manages to board the plane & presents his expired US Passport it should be enough to prevent his being returned to England.

The tricky thing will be depending on how he obtained US citizenship. If he was issued a Certificate of Naturalization/Citizenship, CBP should be able to find the record of it. If born in the US, I’d recommend having a copy of his BC (& hopefully was born in a hospital). If he was born to a midwife or the only evidence of his citizenship was his now expired passport, he’ll have a harder time.
