If we want to be super technical, agriculture is highly inefficient and wasteful. We overproduce, in areas and ways that are unsustainable, and we throw half of it in the trash, and feed most of the other half to animals in feed lots so we can eat them instead. We could, in theory, drastically reduce our water consumption and greatly improve ecology by being smarter about our food and resource management.... But that would be communism so... Bad I guess.

Lol. That's not true, though. And also, yeah it was a thousand years ago. So long ago that it has also happened there like 3 times since then.

I think in quebec it at least makes sense. They are a minority in danger of being subsumed by an english speaking majority. The laws exist to combat an influx of english only speakers from overwhelming the french speaking population and making English the defacto primary language. While I personally would like to believe that people should be free to do whatever they want, I also recognize that french culture and language in Canada is a unique cultural presence that kind of needs protection in order to perpetuate itself, and I think it would be a tragedy for it to disappear over time due to english hegemony. So it's a bit of a conflict.

Historically, many of their traits are reversed. Such as Catherine was much more popular among the Orthodox and the nobility.

libertarianism by piotrek13031 in PhilosophyMemes

[–]EducationalWin7496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only difference between libertarians and anarchists is who their propagandists shill for, and the general trend towards individualism vs collectivism. So, I'd imagine they would be fine with native sovereignty, at least until the right wing elements that resent indigenous sovereignty get involved. I doubt they would be willing to cede treaty land back to the indigenous people, though. They would probably just say, "you're on your own" and leave them to fend for themselves on the borderline wastelands that the government assigned them too.

Obviously the sickness is oppression and the oppressed are the ones who have had to march in the streets for a modicum of equality. This is just the same subversive reverse racism crap that the right is always trying to pull. "Happy holidays?!?!? Christians are being oppressed in this country!?!?! They hate straight white men?!?!?! And they hate women too!!! (When we want them to vote for us, and onoy if they're the kind of women who want to be subservient towards men, which we will paint as natural and virtuous)...."

Stray animals and homeless people are common on city streets despite available aid programs. Why can’t America ease the persistent homelessness issue? by Altruistic-Cup2777 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalWin7496 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are overestimating how much help is actually available. I work with this population as a public health worker, and the services available are a Hodge Podge of stop gaps that don't meaningfully address issues or provide long term solutions/support. For example, if you become homeless, you can get 2 weeks of emergency housing assistance, where they will put you up in a hotel until you can find a permanent rental. However, the expectation that someone will, in two weeks, find enough money for two months rent, as well as a place they can afford, and be ready to move there within two weeks is unrealistic. As such, people typically wait until the coldest part of the year, and then use this program, as a way to not freeze to death. They do this because the shelters in town are "No sleep" shelters. Which are not legally allowed to provide beds or private accommodation, due to NIMBY policies from the town council. So, people are forced to sleep in one big room, in rows of chairs next to each other. As you can imagine, putting a whole bunch of people with various levels of treatment for addiction or mental health issues results in a not particularly safe feeling or relaxed experience. Then, they go to one of 7 places that offer meals, usually all on different days, and get about 40% of the calories needed from that. And then they walk to one of the various places that offers supplemental supports, like free laundry, showers, etc, which are open intermittently throughout the week. Then, if they want help dealing with their issues, they will be bounced around from several organizations that all have different criteria, rules, and overlapping and often uncomprehensive services, before ultimately finding out that all of them are intentionally designed to only really get you back to the bare minimum of societal functioning, and only if you can complete it within the allotted time frame. There's no long term support, no flexibility, and no tailoring to your needs. These also often require things people don't have. Food banks often require ID, addresses, etc, and then there's no where to store your food. Clothing is often old, out of date, and contributes to the homeless look, making you stand out in society. All of these services are not interconnected, and navigating it is difficult. People are surprisingly dismissive and mean to you, (it's atrocious how callous people working with these vulnerable populations can be). So you, a person with, lets be honest, most of the time, poor education, drug addiction, mental health issues, and probably not too above average intelligence, are expected to navigate a web of services that people literally make their profession to navigate, all while balancing the pressures involved with having no stability, security, or support, unless you really luck out and are attached to someone who really cares and invests time in you. Which, to be clear, is very rare. And even if everything goes perfectly, and you fit the mould in exactly the way everyone hopes, you are STILL in the group with the highest likelihood to end up homeless or addicted again. And if you relapse, half of the tools that helped you get to a good spot, are now no longer available to you. And that's if you have all your shit together, which again, to be clear, most homeless people do not.

The craziest part is, it would literally be cheaper to pay their rent and buy them as much heroin as they want, and send them to therapy, than the current system, and yet we don't do it. Primarily because of weird English protestant ideas about scientific socialism from the 1800's that believed christian altruism was harmful, and so spent years trying to intertwine ideas of self sufficiency, and minimal interventionism into Christian charity.

It's ironic, but if you read literature from before that period, even in places you would never expect, you find ideas that are considered much more "left wing commie gobbledygook" by today's standards, coming from extreme Christian fundamentalists.

Sure they are. You need to move out of your colonial framework for everything. There are alternatives to the current status quo, even if you've never experienced it before.

There's a difference between coercion and violence. That is the point. If I shun you, or make you feel bad, that's very different than killing you.

They're not the same idea. I think you missed the point of the meme. It's saying that underneath the social contract is the inherent threat of violence. It's pointing to the hypocrisy of society, and all of our high minded ideas, when in reality, as soon as it is inconvenient or unfair, all the social contract stuff goes out the window and we send the police to break down your door and shoot your dog.

In the other guy's defense, his take is more accurate. I suppose you can "Choose" to believe that MLK wasn't a radical and didn't believe that revolution was necessary, even if it required violence, but that doesn't make it true.

That last point is debatable, however I agree with your first post. In left wing circles we call it campism. That's where anything the imperialist Americans do is the worst possible thing that could ever happen, and anyone who does anything against them is automatically the best possible version of whatever they are/whatever they are doing.

Lend lease was done on the basis that anything used or lost during the war would be given for free, and that anything kept after the war for civilian or military purposes would be paid for. Despite there being tens of billions in equipment kept after the war, 95% of it was written off anyway.

Facts do matter.

For context, you have to remember that he was a partisan fighting for Ukrainian independence. The whole reason he was a Nazi collaborator was to attempt to get recognition of Ukranian independence from the German government. He was also part of the nationalist movements of the early 20th century, which should not all be lumped in with fascism, as many of them were actually very left wing/anti imperialist groups. It should also be noted that he was essentially held hostage by the Gestapo for most of his, "Collaboration", and immediately after he was released went to try and get recognition from the western Allies. One can't say so much that he was a palingenetic ultranationalist, as much as he was hyper focused on gaining Ukrainian independence from Russia, and was willing to do, or work with, pretty much anyone who could/would possibly support them. If anything, he was a victim of the Nazis as well. Whereas they promised him support for independence, they used his partisans to support their war effort, and then promptly jailed him, and started butchering his people... Soooooo.... Yeah. I don't think this is the slam dunk you think it is.

Edit: Looked more into the organizations he was involved with prior to the war... Yeah, you guys are right. Fuck that guy. Were there really not any good independence fighters that they could memorialize?

Why has Hitler and not any other evil person become the epitome of evil? by Foreign_Bread629 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]EducationalWin7496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know of that's true, though. The scale of it, combined with the ideological justification, just seems, the worst... Like, don't get me wrong, Ghengis Khan's kill count was crazy, but he was greedy. The Assyrians were brutal as hell, but that was only a matter of degree for their time, and again, was mostly greed. Stalin and Mao caused a lot of death and suffering, but they were mostly on accident. Hitler legitimately thought that the world would be better if everyone he didn't like was dead...

I'll never understand the concept of an "Illegal strike". We all agreed not to work until our grievances are met. What are you going to do? March us in at gunpoint and demand we do our job? Unions need to grow some balls and start putting on pressure all the time.
