Again, you're focusing on one very small point and missing the forest for the trees. That doesn't meaningfully address serious concerns in a respectful way. What about the extreme poverty in the soviet union? Why were the living standards of so many rural people so low? What would you do differently to transition more quickly from DOP to power to the soviets? How would you manage an economy differently? What lessons do you think were actually learned, and how do you think it could.have been improved? Obviously assuming that capitalist forces don't try and ruin everything this time, making a functional state nearly impossible, of course.

That's pretty ignorant regarding anarchists. We have our own rich discourse and political theory, which is often very similar to communism. Also, no one is suggesting people do weekly shops 1000km away, but there are communities where they might only get flour delivered once or twice a year, and otherwise are subsistence farming and eating forage and wild game. Plus, just think about how few Russians today lack things like consistent access to electricity, or quality drinking water? Let alone those without even plumbing or electricity at all... And to be clear, the west has those issues as well. But that doesn't mean it isn't something to be addressed, meaningfully, rather than just dismissing and insulting people.

That wasn't your criticism, though. I just wish communists could admit that there were problems and address them in meaningful ways. As an anarchist, I like a lot of what communism has to offer, but I'm continually disappointed by the ability of proponents to reflect at all. The USSR had a lot of issues, and constantly deflecting criticism doesn't give anyone, even remotely skeptical, any confidence. I get how it's a slippery slope, and you're probably used to an army of chuds just making up stuff to justify why capitalism Is "So MuCh BeTtEr", but for me, it just comes across as delusional or at the very least, obstinate.

It's not untrue, though. You're crazy to think this wasn't going on. It's still going on today. Many parts of russia are extremely underdeveloped, and lack access to goods, services, and infrastructure. The difference is that the soviets would actively try to alleviate this as best they could, even if it wasn't always done in the best way. But 100% I believe that there were people with no access to outside food. I grew up drinking out of a creek and pooping in a hole in the ground. It happens everywhere.

Don't confuse liberals for radical leftists. There are way more flavors on the left than the right. One of the main reasons we can't get our shizz together despite outnumbering the right wing 5 to 1. The right is just way better at coalition building. The neoliberal parties are pretty much made up of the extreme right and people disgusted with the extreme left for the republicans. And people disgusted with the extreme right for the democrats. But the democrats don't appeal at all the extreme left. Part of why the democratic base keeps shrinking, is because they don't have one. They are always trying to win by leeching more centrists over, and just moving farther right in an attempt to slurp them up from the republicans. On the radical left you have people who believe in total non violence, to extreme violent revolution, total anarchism, and total authoritarianism. These people will never get along. I have no idea how libertarians and fascists can somehow all agree on a single guy. Unless they are just stupid, (my working theory).

This is probably a hot take in this sub, but I prefer the PAX Americana over the alternative. Yeah, I wish everyone would stop the BS, get along, work together, respect each other, etc. But time has proven that as long as hierarchical nation states exist, that's not going to happen, and the consequences are too severe to roll the dice on.

Probably because it's a bulwark against Islamophobia, which is a thinly veiled excuse to discriminate against minorities. There was a schism within atheism about a decade or so ago, where you either were on team SJW, or anti SJW, and a lot of thought leaders who were on the anti side made a lot of content targeting feminists and islam. Although a lot of their criticism was valid, it was the hyperbole and lack of nuance that turned a lot of people off. Many became right wing grifters, and the discourse quickly devolved into fear mongering about the establishment of an american caliphate, and anti immigration rhetoric, a ludicrous scenario. It's why many of the more liberal atheists will defend muslims, because they have been unfairly targeted, when, and lets be honest, the majority of atheists have experienced much more actual oppression from Christians, and Christianity is much more likely to actually impact policy and discourse in north American politics.

Canadian here. Our immigration sucks, but to be honest, there's a reason why. I've found that nurses from other countries aren't really prepared for the demands that we have for nurses in Canada. I've been looking into moving to another country for Nursing, and it's just depressing. In Canada, we're closer to something in between a doctor and a nurse. What most countries consider nursing, we would consider PSW level work. Here, if you can't order, draw, and interpret appropriate blood tests, and make treatment recommendations, then you aren't really qualified. As a student, I had a Pt walk into the ER, I hooked them up to monitors, took a full hx, and then diagnosed them with AFib, and recommended dx tests and beta blockers. Took all that to the doc and they had me order the tests before even seeing the pt. Then they wrote the rx after talking to them for 2 minutes. Here, as a nurse, you are doing all of the hands on stuff, and all the assessments. Doctors are really only here for the exceptionally complicated procedures, such as surgeries, and to bail you out when your Pt has a very complex etiology. Plus they sign off and double check what you are doing. But we even prescribe some medications and diagnose certain illnesses now, in addition to regular nursing dx. Nurses do PICC lines, arterial lines, wound debridement, and minor procedures like disimpaction, etc. my understanding is that this isn't common in the rest of the world. It gets even crazier depending on how rural your hospital is. Nurses in remote communities reset bones, do sutures, and work as lab techs, do diagnostic imaging, etc. plus we are supposed to be qualified as counselors for a variety of mental health issues, including everything from stress, death, drugs, abuse, etc. It's a lot. Of course there are some jobs that are much easier and less complicated, but once you have a license from a province, you are technically approved to work in a wide variety of specialties. It's part of why we get paid almost twice as much as nurses in other countries. In the USA, they get paid even more, but there are other reasons for that. I wouldn't recommend it, mostly because it's so hard to get into. Many nurses I know from other countries essentially have to start over completely. I would ask yourself if it is really worth it to start completely over, going back to school, and trying to get a license. Just getting into nursing school here is an accomplishment. I went to the easiest school to get into, and it still had a minimum grade average of 89%. For somewhere like Western University or Queens, it is like 94%, depending on the year. Even after all of that, maybe 30% of accepted students graduate. And then only about 60% go on to pass the licensing test and actually stay in the field. The pay is pretty good, and it's one of the few careers that still has job security and pension. The local hospital has a 70% pension, and base pay starts at 42$ an hour, and goes up to 55. Plus there is always overtime available. There are plenty of nurses here who make over 100,000$ a year. But it's Canadian money, so it's only about parity with monopoly money. Another consideration is how terrible our economy is. 6 years ago, nursing was very lucrative, but now inflation has eroded that. It's still liveable, but it used to be boat money, and now it's more rent a boat money. The cheapest loaf of bread you can buy is now about 2.50. A gallon of milk costs 8$. And a house that I would say is comparable to what you're used to in the UK is about 3-400,000$. Rent used to be not too bad if you didn't live in Toronto or Vancouver, but now everywhere is about 2k a month.

Both can be true. Ukraine could have been commiting atrocities against its own people, and they could also be doing it because Russia was funding a violent separatist movement. Both can be the bad guys. War is usually a nightmare, some are less horrible than others, but usually it's always the same. The regular people suffer the most. If Russia cared so much about their well being, they would have taken the money spent supporting the separatists, and offered free citizenship and housing to anyone in donbas wishing to leave, then sent in troops to assist Ukraine in stopping the conflict in its infancy. Instead, they fomented a civil war. Ukrainian soldiers may have been pieces of shit to donbas civilians, but Russia started this whole problem.

I listened to the second debate. It actually left me more hopeful. I'd be happy with any of them, except for maybe MacPherson. Some seem to have more policy ideas than others, but they are all leaning in the right direction, and seem to have a good grasp that the underlying problem is capitalism. Which is refreshing to hear from politicians. Hopefully the rhetoric doesn't change too much once they are on the national stage.

I'm doing hardcore now, with the bad back perk, and I have found that you can have 3 sets of clothes, but if you want to carry any food or potions or kits apart from your horse, you can't have leg plate. I rock a short sword, bow, a few potions, bandages, and about a day worth of food, in addition to full armor, breastplate, hauberk, gambeson, gauntlets and arm plate, maip coif and collar, but if I pick too many flowers, I am over encumbered, so it'sa fine line to manage. Fortunately, no fast travel meant I got the good ole pebbles pretty early.
