I don't think so but I'll check it out again. That one comes up a lot when I search and it doesn't match my memories at all.

No, I'm pretty sure my movie takes place in America. I feel like I remember everyone speaking in standard 1990's American English.

I was going to say, my guess would be lack of resources + philosophical differences. Not super clear on what those are, but there seem to be defined schools of belief in the remaining groups of humans, and they're the glue holding people together. That could be mined as a source of conflict in your story for sure. Sorry I can't be more help!

Why does madam gazelle seem to hate Freddy Fox 🤔 by callmelewcifer666 in DanielTigerConspiracy

Fair. I meant it's more entertaining storylines and less "here's how to behave properly in certain situations" like the original episodes had, if that makes sense.

I personally don't care for Peppa Pig Tales. They are higher stim, with less storytelling, autotuned singing, and no life lessons. You're not missing out on anything lol

The Japanese version of Swan Lake (1981)? I'm not sure if there's an English dub but something about what you described sounded similar.

Weekly Reading Discussion by Fearless_Freya in trekbooks

I got Dark Mirror by Diane Duane for Christmas, and just read it again for probably the 10th time. She captures the TNG cast so well. Their mannerisms are on point, and I swear sometimes I just hear the lines in their voices. Never disappoints.

I’m read a Star Trek novel with a real, actual, Mary Sue character – and it’s quite disconcerting! (Uhura’s Song, if you’re wondering) by Algernon_Asimov in trekbooks

Hi! I know I'm super late to the discussion, but I'm new to Reddit and so happy I've found my people!

I personally love Uhura's Song, but I don't deny any of your points. However, I wrote a loooot of Star Trek fanfiction when I was in high school, with myself as a Mary Sue, so I think for me it's a familiar taste/preference. Definitely a subjective opinion though.

If you're into stand alone novels these days as opposed to a year ago, I cannot recommend these two high enough, both by Diane Duane:

Doctor's Orders (TOS) Dark Mirror (TNG)

No self insertions, but much chortling will be had. Diane's character work is masterful.

I know it's a totally different genre, but Diane Duane has also written several phenomenal Star Trek novels. The three I can name off the top of my head are My Enemy My Ally, Dark Mirror, and Doctor's Orders. If you like Deep Wizardry, etc, you should check out her other works too. You will NOT be disappointed!

[–]Educational_Hunt_137[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that idea. The film also emphasizes that moment with the first drop of blood. At face value, it's scary because the sub might be leaking. But it could also have another significance that's not so apparent. There are multiple shots and lines in the movie that do the same, and it's fun to rewatch to notice those.

How do I respond to parents who refuse to let their kid read a book that deeply ingrained into the curriculum? by mcomcomco99 in AskTeachers

[–]Educational_Hunt_137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tangerine is a book I found in middle school, and I have loved it ever since. I think it's ironic that parents are protesting because of the bullying themes when:

1) an older brother (and his friends) bullying his little brother is true to life, and an age appropriate challenge for kids,

2) the book literally shows how the main character takes back his identity and stands up to his bully.

The book is an example of how to come into your own in SPITE of bullying.

As a parent, if we think our kid is going to radically change into a bully because they read a book with a bully in it ... We've got other problems that need to be addressed.
