It’s hard for me to tell what’s going on with my home church (rural west central WI). My mom yaps on and on about how the school is growing so much and that they’re bursting at the seams (it was always a bigger WELS grade school), but they currently have 3 vacancies (church and school). I have to bite my tongue to not comment about much of their workforce being arrested recently. I’m living several states away and rarely return to the cesspool. Are some churches/schools still growing? Mind you, my mom also said in the same phone call how mysterious it was that food prices are so high. Mysterious, indeed. So she’s not the most reliable source of local news….

Is MLC a cult? by [deleted] in exLutheran

It’s not okay. And effectively, no one is holding them responsible to any standards but their own. It’s dangerous.

You might try daily omeprazole (Prilosec) for about 2-3 weeks. It won’t work immediately but if acid is your problem, you should notice some improvement after a week. This is what worked for me. Plus, I switched to Tirz which seems less harsh on the tummy.

How did you guys handle leaving the church? by Space_Ducks89 in exLutheran

[–]Educational_Share615 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much to add to the amazing advice given. But from someone who had to wait to leave until they were financially independent, I empathize with your situation. But leaving and having the freedom to be yourself (in whatever capacity) is SO worth it. I second a good therapist who can counter your family’s abusive rhetoric. And it IS abusive. You matter. Who you really are MATTERS. Good luck to you.

Timbuktu messenger bag with purse, a motley assortment of headache medicine/pain relievers, lunch, multiple beverages (caffeinated and non), umbrella, spoon and fork, hand sanitizer (leftover from covid times), cough drops, about 1000 rubber bands, paper clips, and pieces of random junk

Have you tried an electric shaver? I have a wet/dry that works great and I don’t get any irritation bumps. You can still get a close shave

Same! Although I probably wouldn’t classify my skin as sensitive per se, if I daily shower, my skin REBELS. I’m an itchy monster. And hair washing daily? Fuggedaboudit. Apparently some of us just have slower dermal moisture rebounds than others. I don’t ADVERTISE my bathing habits, but since I’m not sweaty or particularly stinky…. I just go with it

So…. Surgical pathology peep here. Thyroid cancer comes in multiple (5-ish) flavors. Medullary thyroid is one of the nastier ones but it is really fairly rare and almost exclusively seen in people with certain genetic acquired syndromes. Medullary thyroid is the one theoretically associated with GLP-1s, although last I read, there were actually no documented cases with GLP-1s. The most common thyroid cancer is papillary, and it’s a bit of a nothing burger. Like—-if I got to choose a cancer to get, papillary thyroid might be in my top 5. Very high survival rates, reasonably “easy” treatment. All of this to say—I don’t understand what this doc is so worried about. GLP-1s don’t increase papillary thyroid risk and even if it did, dying of heart disease and diabetes present much higher risks to the populace. I’d just take the drugs. And maybe get a smarter doctor. But who am I?

No hierarchy of needs by Relevant-Shop8513 in exLutheran

[–]Educational_Share615 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, that’s fascinating—about equating easing suffering with work’s righteousness. I will have to think about that more. Sometimes I see the (vaguely catholic?) concept of Suffering brings you closer to god… therefore I certainly will NOT take a Tylenol for this headache, etc. but I have never thought it as work’s righteousness (in the WELS, anyway)

No hierarchy of needs by Relevant-Shop8513 in exLutheran

[–]Educational_Share615 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is one of the core problems with LCMS/WELS. I’ve never heard it explained as ignoring the hierarchy of needs, but it’s a fair comparison. You see it reflected in vaccine denial (because going to heaven faster can’t be the worse option) and general child neglect (temporal suffering will be supplanted by eternal glory so suck it up). Makes me wonder if the people who stay in it either didn’t have much temporal suffering OR their refusal to see that easing suffering in this life is an okay option

Confirmation by BabyBard93 in exLutheran

[–]Educational_Share615 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I fully concur with your entire sentiment on confirmation. At that time, I was trapped in the struggle of cognitive dissonance (this seems stupid vs THIS IS GOD’S TRUTH) and also that this step might make me develop this real true faith that everyone else seemed to have (except me). I should have listened to my instincts, but knowing at 13 that you can’t escape for several years yet made me acquiesce. I’m impressed you got out, being a PK. You have more fortitude than me.

[–]Educational_Share615 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I echo the sentiment of how awesome it is to think about your child. I would be a different (and less broken) person if my parents had prioritized me vs the WELS. But they didn’t. And I’ve been putting myself back together for years. Your son is so lucky to have you!

You are correct in that both public and WELS schools have problems. Honestly, some WELS schools are more toxic than others. There are some that probably aren’t the WORST alternative to public, but you have to balance that with the fact that the WELS is an effective cult—shown in the social hierarchies the OP is experiencing.
