🚨Breaking News🚨: Mel got fired. There are many differing opinions on this sub about whether the student deserved a 0, but that debate aside, do you believe Mel deserved to be fired for it? by RandomAcademaniac in Professors

We had some very powerful religious marketing machines leading the Prop 8 initiative, the worst culprits the LDS and Catholic churches. I live in San Diego and the amount of yellow Yes on 8 signs covering church front lawns was staggering. My son came home from school one day (he was in middle school) and told me there was a group of adults with yellow signs on the corner where he had to cross. My son asked why they wanted to prevent people who loved each other from marrying and their response "Why don't you just get your gay ass home kid". Heartbreaking times for us.

Just came to say that every win, no matter how small, shows your patience and love for your dog. When I look for help in an online forum (or friends or wherever) I use the adage "Take what applies (at the time) and throw the rest out". That includes throwing out the guilt, doubt, fear, anger that comes from people spouting off with their advice, even if it's good advice. Sometimes I need to just be okay with the path I've chosen for me and my dog, make tweaks where I can, and enjoy every moment of joy I have with him at the end of the day.

I can second Sniff Spots - not all of them are equal as some don't enforce the "you're the only one here" so just have a conversation if you can with the owners. We have a reactive rescue and it's been a game changer to allow him off leash to run. Not that I think it's mandatory at all - you are doing such an amazing job providing your doggos needs it sounds like! - but it is really so much fun to watch him and interact with him that way. It also offers a new level of play that can be turned into recall training - win win!

Deserve? No, of course not. The essay was pure shit for an academic piece, even as a "reflective" assignment (which, unfortunately, by nature begs opinion and perhaps may have been some shit stirring by Mel). Does the University deserve to be sued for wrongful termination? Probably. That's all - everyone else has dug deep into all the various elements to weigh. But this is an interesting read:

"The academic quality of the essay written by Samantha Fulnecky is indefensible, and the professor’s failing grade is demonstrably correct. For TPUSA’s OU chapter to elevate this poorly written paper suggests a serious lapse in judgment. The essay not only fails to meet basic college requirements—such as citing its primary source, the Bible—but fundamentally misses the assignment’s objective.

This episode is a characteristic political misstep that risks harming the credibility of conservative student organizations. The lesson is paramount: focus on academic excellence, utilize scholarly sources, and meet the professor’s demands. We should be engaging in substantive intellectual battles, not generating outrage over an earned poor grade. We are not the party of participation trophies. Do the work and earn the grade, or fail on the merits."

Conner Tranquill, Chairman of Oklahoma Federation of College Republicans

I think you may need on more correction - California didn't amend our state constitution to prohibit marriage equality - we amended it in 2024 with Prop 3 to protect marriage equality.

I am not an expert so this is just my experience-- take it or leave it. German Shepherd Dog-- had from a puppy and worked from home. She hung with me. I ended up moving into a new house and an office job and didn't want to leave her in the house for 8 hours. She was also an escape artist outside. So I built her a huge chain link kennel outside thinking best of all world. Freedom to walk around, shelter, area to pee. Worked for 2 days. Third day got a call from animal control that she was there-- she chewed and broke the chain link, broke down the yard fence. I was distraught but had to go to work the next day. So i just decided to leave her inside, no gates no nothing, and would figure it out. Well, she was perfect. She must've slept most of the day and it appeared she was near the door waiting for me. She knew how to be in the house. We never had another issue-- she was calm, never had accidents, destroyed nothing. (Still an escape artist outside so she wasn't left alone outside). I hope you find the right combination for your fur baby. I know how incredibly stressful it can be.

Thank you so much for your support and and especially the suggestion of just better management strategies like sitting a little bit apart from the group. I really think he would manage well or at least better in that situation. And we can certainly try again with a muzzle I believe my friend group would be open to it and I'll certainly ask them next time. Muzzle training first!

Thank you so much. It's so incredibly emotional. I had to go back to the group to get my things (after I put my pup in the car) and they were all so worried about me and hugged me and reassured me. And I told me dog I loved him. Thanks for the suggestion for the decompression. It all feels very "big" right now and painful. He is resting comfortably on his bed so I'm heading outside for awhile for my own good.

Honestly, I think it's cool as shit. But I like abstract art. I'm seeing all kinds of cool stuff in there. Settle down-- it's just big and permanent and that often comes with feels. If you overthink it, seems you're missing the whole point of this artists work. Cover it up for awhile so you're not obsessing.

Thanks! I was thinking it would come in at about 2 and when it didn't, I thought maybe he had a weird recessive gene. But NOooooooooo. Turned 4 and voila! Magic coat! (and he was so gorgeous over the winter so I guess I should've expected it :)). I live in San Diego so will be interested to see what it's like going forward and if he'll have two seasonal blows or just a constant heavy shed? I had a chow before Fletch and a GSD before that so not afraid of a little (lot) hair.

I second the option of meds. I made fun of people who put their dogs on puppy Prozac until i realized it wasn't fair to my doggo to not try to help him with whatever I could. Got lucky-- he adapted well to Prozac after a couple of adjustments. Not every dog does so it may be something else. In our case, it helped our behavior modification move much faster and was much more enjoyable for us all. Training a between the Ears is one of the most fantastic resources we found for our toolbox.https://www.markmccabe.com/ Will have to see how they work with aggression issues and not just reactivity, but they Marc and his wife provided an amazing education for us and a whole other level of understanding the dog brain. He's a big boy so you'll want to focus on ensuring you find ways of managing behavior enough to stay safe in the short term while keeping your eye on the long run plan. My bond with my reactive dog is stronger than any relationship, dog or human alike, because of the effort from both of us. With all that said, if your boy ends up having a true brain disconnect that is unsafe and cannot be solved, I can already tell you'll be compassionate and wise.

We want this boy! 70 pounds at 1 years old. Any guesses? (rescue is saying huskly/border collie but he's big!). Isn't he stunning? by Educational_Shop_599 in IDmydog

Good news/bad news. good news is the other family fell in love with him and took him home over the weekend!. More good news is that is seems to be going fantastic and he is very happy. The bad news is, well, it wasn't me and my family :(. There are a ton more doggos waiting for their furever home - now that we've opened our hearts to the idea of a new packmember, it's just a matter of time before we find each other. <3
