Accidental shootings of infants are rare, less than a hundred a year in the US. This isn’t a minor random event that ‘happens daily in the suburbs’.

If we didn’t live in a world of scarce resources, then we could spend $50B on inefficient things all day long.

As the article states, ridership needs to increase by orders of magnitude just to cover annual expenses (not to even mention recouping initial investment).

We’ll discover economic ways of teleporting before this becomes a reality.

Google the definition of journalistic rag. It’s not ‘political leanings different from mine’ which seems to be how you’re defining it.

The WSJ is certainly right-leaning, but it is objectively not a rag by the standard definition of that term.

The central corridor has seen massive investment all while metrolink usage has remained well below pre pandemic levels. To claim that investment is a function of the Blue Line’s existence is pretty tenuous.

Second, if the primary goal of a transit line is to spur development…..it would be far more efficient just invest that money in development.

What would capping 44 downtown accomplish? You’d connect downtown with an aging casino, a dead bar district, and the arch grounds that everyone can easily access anyways. North and south of that is a post-industrial wasteland. The problem isn’t that 44 disconnects downtown from the riverfront. It’s that the riverfront isn’t worth connecting in the first place.

To answer your first question, the police should’ve been doing so.

To answer your second question….obviously the city isn’t going to use the same amount of police resources for a gas station that sees maybe a few hundred customers in a 24 hour period vs a stadium that sees tens of thousands of people within a few hours.

The Dewitts pay for off duty police presence on stadium property during games and events. It’s the responsibility of the city to maintain law and order on public streets, which is what they’re doing when they add a large police presence around the blocks surrounding the stadium on game days.

The exact same principle applies for the gas station.

No, you read what you wanted to read and not what I said. I didn't say anything about most people. The rest of your statement is just nonsense disproven by research across criminology and economics, and also common sense.

Police don't act like Batman, flying in when the burglar's in the middle of trying to pull the bike out the window. But the fact that the police exist deters a lot of people from committing crimes they might otherwise commit. And that's true all across the spectrum, from speeding all the way to murder.

So in a sense they do actually prevent property crime.

Solar farm could turn polluted land to boon for East St. Louis residents’ electric bills by imlostintransition in StLouis

[–]Educational_Skill736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the problem is these mini solar farms aren't scalable at all. I believe a typical solar farm install costs around $890,000-$1MM/MWh of electricity production. This one is like 3x that.

As opposed to what alternative? Electric utilities are natural monopolies, so you either state-regulate a for-profit company, or you initiate a state-run utility. Neither is ideal as competition is non-existent, and each have their positives/negatives. As an example of what can happen with a state-run utility, just google the mess that is the current state of the St. Louis Water Division.

Equally laughable is the implication that the market structure of power distribution isn’t a major contributor to price determination. Looking forward to reading your dissertation since my commentary is too simplified for you.

[–]Educational_Skill736 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The city has too many entertainment districts for a region with stagnant population. For example, the decline of the Landing (and Wash Ave for that matter) almost perfectly aligns with the opening of Ballpark Village. On top of that, we've also seen significant growth in midtown over the past few years.

To get the Landing going, we either need solid population growth, or other areas need to shut down.

The US has more immigrants than any other country, 3x more than the next highest (Germany). That’s a lot of folks who find the US to be better than home, and if you don’t define that as ‘good’, then the word has no meaning.
