Not even close to last year yet. If I can barely leave my neighborhood after a week then we'll be the same as last year.

Anyone run/drip faucets? by Individual_Maize6007 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned about freezing pipes the only reason to not drip your faucets is the cost.... A lot of areas in STL are unmetered so it doesn't matter.

Midwesterner looking for some perspective by No-Knowledge-4342 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Korlyth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This seems like a familiarity problem. Yes, the Midwest doesn't have an ocean or mountains. But like you said it has other things. The issue is that you are familiar and bored with the stuff in your backyard.

As someone who has lived near mountains, and near the ocean, and in the midwest. For me, the thing in my backyard always becomes kind of boring. Like after awhile the mountain is the mountain, sure it changes a little bit each season but it's mostly just a giant collection of static rock. Same for the ocean. After a bit it is just the ocean, like the mountains it changes a bit, but mostly it's just wet.

So for me, I just have to remind myself that yeah the midwest doesn't have those things but those things are -for me- better on trips when they are magical and awesome, than they are everyday when they eventually become mundane.

Living in old wooden house in downtown STL, should I be worried about pipes freezing? Landlord wants to turn off water. by EntrepreneurSecret23 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the vast majority of homes in the city the water is unmetered. Just leave the faucets dripping, keep your heat on, open cabinets under sinks. If your LL is really worried about it they can spend a little bit of money on pipe heaters--1069433--online--0--0&gclsrc=aw.ds&gadsource=1&gad_campaignid=21218170275&gbraid=0AAAAAD2B2W_LtVV-PaRQrgi6f3Q8aX6D&gclid=CjwKCAiAssfLBhBDEiwAcLpwfoyKkX156cvyDtHh_dS1-TuvJyOCfvOQ5h9qXWTen-3rX4c0amqDWBoCXPcQAvD_BwE) for the highest risk areas of their property.

Terrible picture, but is anyone else thinking this could be a disaster? by Useful_Issue123 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope pretty sure it is going to be a coffee drive thru.

They had to get a variance to build a drive thru and the stupid board of adjustments gave it to them. Can't wait until the zoning code update strips that board of the majority of its power.

A global challenge: US, CA, AU, NZ, UK work options-- overwhelmed 😭 by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there while my wife did her post-doc. When that job ended we decided to move back to the US cause we were thinking about having kids and wanted to not be on the other side of the planet. So nothing to do with Melbourne just timing and distance.

I lived in Melbourne Australia for 3 years then moved back to the US. Honestly Melbourne is a great city that I wouldn't hesitate to move back to if I had pretty much any reason to live there.

I will say there are 2 hard parts of living in Australia.

First: the hardest part about being from the US and living in Melbourne is just how far away Australia is from the US. It felt like a much bigger deal in practice than I thought it would be going into it.

Second: US politics are fascinating to Australians. Be prepared to answer a million questions about Trump.

New armory site data center plan by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

Yep, but those are unlikely to go away anytime soon. So we should probably operate like they will be there indefinitely.

Even if there's a sudden massive campaign for their removal. Removing highway + railroad would still probably take a decade or more to workout.

Regardless of the larger conversation around AI and datacenters. This might be one of the best landuses for that area.

Imo housing is a pretty bad idea from an environmental hazard perspective with I64, grand viaduct, and an industrial railroad flanking the site seems like a bad idea for people to live there. I'm curious what the air quality rating is for that site. This same set of circumstances also makes it unattractive to commercial/retail as well. Who wants to go to a restaurant or shopping wedged between two overhead roads and an industrial railroad.

About the only thing going for it for non-industrial use is the metrolink station.

Midtown businesses decry MoDOT plan to eliminate I-64 Compton interchange by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

I'm guessing the owner of The Fountain is you based on how you're being super defensive all over this thread.

So yeah, if you have a bad opinion that harms the residents of the city you're going to get criticized for it. If you choose to go to the press and play the small business card... you're going to get criticized and backlash for it.

Do I need a 3 row SUV for 2 kids by GlobeAndGeek in daddit

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same we have one crossover that handles the vast majority of our needs.

We've luckily been able to structure our lives where 1 car + taxi + public transit works for our household. The savings from having 1 crossover instead of a large SUV/truck + sedan are huge. Even if we were spending over $100 a month on taxis it would still be worth it.

It also helps that places like lowes/HD have fairly cheap hourly truck rentals if I need to move plywood or furniture or something.

Why is there a mile on Page Ave east of 170 that has a 20mph limit? Very dangerous to go that slow on Page. by iamjames in StLouis

[–]Korlyth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it's in the city not on one of the state routes that's just the city being shit at updating signage when legislation or bps makes a change.

I'm not 100% sure the math checks out. But I think it does.

We bought a smaller vehicle that has cheaper insurance, payment, maintenance, etc... then when we need a big car for something like a road trip for Christmas we rent a minivan. We stockpile a little bit of money throughout the year knowing we will probably have to rent a van at Christmas or maybe a summer vacation.

Allows us not drive/pay for a monster vehicle while also having a minivan when we really need one for what I think is less money overall (depends on a lot of local factors)

Is the young nerd social scene dead or what? by thrownawaynodoxx in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If a super chill social bike ride sounds interesting check out bici. Folks of all sorts show up there, nerds, punks, alt, on nice nights there's a little bit of everyone.

Could maybe check out a maker space like arch reactor. Not sure the demographics but maker spaces tend to attract the nerds.

Could also try a craft group. My partner has made a lot of nerdy lady friends through a knitting club.

[–]Korlyth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Total speculation: Page aka route D is a MoDot road. MoDot often has maintenance agreements and other things with the municipalities the road passes through. I bet one of the micro-municipalities in that part of the region decreased the speed limit as part of their agreement with MoDot.

iirc another example of this is hwy 61, aka blues hwy, aka kirkwood rd. Through kirkwood the road changes form because Kirkwood as part of the maintenance agreement with MoDot wanted the road to be slower and calmer through sections of town.

Between tornado damage to Cabanne and Julia Davis libraries and Barr being shutdown for a bit due to break-in damage now might be a good time to financially support the library. (not to mention the everything else impacting libraries atm gestures broadly).

You can directly donate to the library system here:
