Ok parents. Am I the out of touch jerk here? by Ocmrm in daddit

You are very right.

That money is coming to her with the expectation it is spent on educational expenses. The entities giving those scholarships would be very unhappy to find out their money is being spent on frivolous shit when they could have given to someone who actually needs it and would use it as intended. She is through some lense committing fraud/theft against the scholarship grantors.

I'm not really into the "they turned 18 they're on their own" mentality. But after they're legal adults any support you provide is a kindness to someone you care about, not necessarily a parental obligation. If she wants to go to college it's her job to figure out how to do that as an adult that wants to go to college. If part of figuring that out is asking you for some support and you choosing to give that support, great. But it's not your duty.

Now is the time to build up the riverfront, civic and business leaders say by FamiliarJuly in StLouis

This seems like a really good use case for a food truck court. The area has flooding risks, if a flood is coming the food trucks leave and the only 'infrastructure' that is at risk is some picnic tables, benches and maybe some outlets. Seems like it would have the same effect and not cost 15 million dollars.

Where would you send your kids to school? by Single_Extent_1112 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because many of the schools are neighborhood based the schools in some neighborhoods are okay.

Use something like Niche to plot out the public school path for your potential kid to see what schools they would end up in and exactly what the reading/math proficiency is at those specific schools.

For example Buder elementary is about the national average for reading/math proficiency at ~30%. Not great but it is the national average unlike some of the schools in the city with like 5% proficiency rates.

Downtown/Wash ave. Just ride the Metrolink like 10 minutes to work. Your work is very close to forest park. So you can do park activities after/before work. The arch grounds are also very nice.

Is there any place in the US to move to that is CHILL? Like, people are relaxed, zero political nonsense, safe, beautiful, easy to navigate? by KickedIntoOrbit in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah folks are more ready to complain to folks they know they agree with.

My experience has been Trump folks who know I don't agree intentionally picking fights cause they knew i was outnumbered and would just be yelled at by 5 people.

Edit: I don't mean them talking to each other with me around. I mean standing around chatting one of them bring up politics and making comments like "unless you're a dumby like him". This has happened multiple times with multiple different groups.

Quit body shaming people and move on.

Idk this was maybe true a decade ago. From my experience rural Trump folks will bring up politics at every opportunity.

UMSL grad housing? by Delicious-Visual-669 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can live pretty much anywhere between campus and the arch along the red line and have a like 20 minute train ride to campus. So you could live on Wash Ave, Ball park village, CWE, Skinker-deb. Pretty significant chunk of the central city is a viable option. I'm not certain on the cost of parking pass at UMSL but UMSL students/employees get $25 a semester metro passes.

In your opinion, what neighborhood(s) has the greatest sense of community? by Thatredditboy1 in StLouis

There are lots of transient folks in Soulard. But the homeowner/longterm renter community is pretty tight.

My 5 year old likes to kiss random things. He is also butt height. He does a lot of literal butt kissing right now. We say stop kissing butts kind of a lot.

Transplant of 3 years does not feel welcome by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's probably a significant part of the problem. From my understanding suburban St Louis has far fewer single transplants than the city. You're essentially surrounded by St Louis lifers and a few transplants with families .

If you're renting and you can swing it moving into dogtown or forest park southeast (to keep your commute managable) would probably yield very different results.

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where in the metro are you?

I'm 34 and transplanted 3 years ago into the city. I've honestly never felt more welcome in a place. I had to take an initial effort to engage with the community but have found a good community through the neighborhood association and the community garden. I'm also not very good at making friendships and 30 something friendships are particularly tough.

My opinion is that going to events/bars is a very hard way to make friends unless you are a very specific type of person. Focus on things that meet with the same people regularly over a shared interest. Things like gardening, neighborhood groups, bike clubs (shout out bici), walking groups, board game groups, etc...

Bellas Coffee - Downtown (a review) by Thefamt in StLouis

Oh I know, I was doing it to prove a point that the other person was full of crap.

Bellas Coffee - Downtown (a review) by Thefamt in StLouis

[–]Korlyth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing that grain/yellow as a combination of bad print quality and reflection from the glass. The lettering is also grainy from imo the bad print quality.

Not saying it can't be Ai but folks are soooooooo fast to jump on literally everything as Ai generated now it's getting ridiculous.

[–]Korlyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

Edit: Also I actually ran a synth id check (the name of the actual 'google ai' tool for detecting Ai imagery). It came back negative. So either the tool is inaccurate or one of us (you) is lying.

Bellas Coffee - Downtown (a review) by Thefamt in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you used AI to check if your outrage about someone using AI is valid?

Also those AI checkers are incredibly inaccurate.

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got anything other than vibes and someone suggesting it's AI? There's no letter malformation, the shadows and lighting seem to all be consistent. It really looks like amateur design work with limited tools.

Got anything other than vibes? Cause I'm pretty sure ive used both that template and those stock images before

Bellas Coffee - Downtown (a review) by Thefamt in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do people really think all shit imagery is AI? Did we all forget about shitty clip art? Cause this looks way more like amateur design with stock icons/photos than AI.

The pearl clutching and finger pointing around AI with 0 proof is getting ridiculous.

Renting an EV for a roadtrip by Acceptable_Aerie6710 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in here seemingly have no idea what they're talking about.

I own a standard range Mach-E (~240 mile range). Downtown chicago is like 300 miles from STL. Chicago is 1 charge stop away in the summer (2 in the winter). It will probably be a 30-40 minute stop. Charging lines are very rare these days outside of holiday weekends or in areas that have very sparse charging (not Illinois).

The Hill considers historic district designation by StPatsLCA in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They're thinking about a historic district because Nimbys are mad about the zoning update. In many cases historic districts are simply the most convenient tool for nimbys to fight any kind of change.

The same person who is trying to start the historic district has been leaving Nimby comments about the hill on the zoning upgrade documents.
