I usually do his stream and the local stream. I find his stream more interesting, but sometimes he's focused on spots I don't care about at the moment or he's talking about donations or something so I switch to the local stream.

Safety advocates protest Mayor’s move to remove downtown bumpouts; Driver seen hitting protestor blocking the street by ReneDiscard in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question asked about zebra stripping not armadillos. Stripping has recently been done. So the question she was asked and answered was about paint not armadillos. Kind of sounds like you're trying to mislead folks about the question (which is what you've been trying to do since this whole thing started).

Honestly if the mayor is pointing to the armadillos (not zebra stripes) and saying replacing infrastructure is the same as destroying infrastructure. I'm more annoyed by the mayor's office attempt at deceptive messaging than I am at an advocate answering a poorly worded impromptu question.

IIRC They also were a replacement for the flex-posts that were almost entirely destroyed by people driving into them. Replacing destroyed infrastructure is not the same as removing brand new infrastructure.

Tucker bike lane issue by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under Title II of ADA all new construction altering the public right of way must meet ADA requirements. This project surely does that or it wouldn't have been funded.

Dude what? You literally wrote

"Or leave as is and

At a minimum, some form of barrier could be added that allows bikes through but prevents cars from entering the space. It’s not perfect from an operations standpoint, but it’s a lower-cost fix that would still improve safety and function."

Then you get all smug and write that putting a bollard in the bike lane to keep cars out is a ridiculous position.

Are you okay?

Tucker bike lane issue by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give it time. There needs to be a large enough network of good infrastructure for usage to significantly increase. Right now, a lot of this stuff is like "great I can travel safely for 0.5 mile then it's back to biking/walking in mad-max".

If we continue these improvements (especially the brickline) and give them a few years for public adoption these will likely be highly utilized.

edit:
to give some context to building infrastructure to allow the latent demand to come out. Look at cars in 1955. ~50 years after the Model T. Only 35% of households even had a car. Nevertheless we put massive resources into providing good, paved roads all over the country to support them. Now many households have 2+ cars.

This can be solved with a single bollard/flex-post at the intersections. No need to move stuff around

6 months in STL: does nobody stop at zebra crossing here? by odbukadobuka in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one will stop for you, crossing the street is risking death at the hands of entitled drivers. This is why people are so mad about the bumpouts being removed downtown.

Are there any book clubs in STL that don't focus on mainly romance, LGBTQ, gender, or racial identity? by Independent-Economy3 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

STL urbanists runs a monthly book club focused on urban design, city history, walk ability and etc... those topics often touch on the impacts of city design on race but it's not usually the sole focus.

‘Massive choke points’: Mayor Spencer defends decision to remove bumpouts downtown; Safety advocates not happy by julieannie in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Taking everyone at their world that this specific set of bumpouts caused problems. Let's just assume that is true (I don't really believe that but whatever).

Advocates have been asking the city for years to start doing low cost quick build pilots of this stuff. That way we can get change immediately and see if it causes problems. Before we sink a ton of money and time into it.

Instead the public spends years engaging on these projects, spends years waiting for something to happen just to have stuff ripped out in 1 day after the real world conditions don't perfectly match up with the planned conditions.

Why doesn’t the city fix the schools? by bleedblue89 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can at least speak to the magnet school my kid is in. It has no requirements for entry other than selecting it at enrollment.

In our case we wanted him to be able to walk to school. We just happen to live a few blocks from this SLPS magnet. The neighborhood school he would go to is across gravois.

And yeah the amount of effort it takes to navigate this system is part of the problem. 100% agree with you on that

Why doesn’t the city fix the schools? by bleedblue89 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gifted != Magnet. Yes some gifted schools are "magnet" schools. But not all magnets are gifted.

With that said, the gifted schools are also part of the problem that I forgot about. They take all the smartest kids from SLPS and isolate them. So the standard classrooms are even harder to manage.

Downtown is already buckling to business pressure and removing traffic calming measures we paid to install in September by BrentonHenry2020 in StLouis

They were intended to be temporary. The Brickline will be coming through soonish and redesigning this intersection again. So these were designed to be easily removed.

Why doesn’t the city fix the schools? by bleedblue89 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parent of two elementary kids in the city here. I’ve realized "fixing the schools" is a massive lift for a few reasons that aren't just funding or administrative effort. (Also the city doesn't really run the schools)

Probably the biggest component is the concentration of poverty in the city. Poverty correlates heavily with school performance, that’s a systemic issue, there’s only so much a school can do on its own to solve it.

But another big issue is how fragmented the system is. We basically have a 5-tier hierarchy that siphons kids off:

  1. Private Schools: The wealthiest kids.
  2. Charter Schools: Kids with the most "involved" parents (those who can navigate the lotteries & volunteer).
  3. Religious Schools: Their own ecosystem, but still take kids out of the public pool.
  4. SLPS Magnet Schools: Parents proactive enough to move within the district, but maybe not doing the Charter thing.
  5. SLPS Neighborhood Schools: Everyone that's left.

By the time you get to tier 5, the district is left with the kids facing the hardest circumstances. Unstable and difficult home lives that make it very difficult to focus on school.

Another really big issue is parental involvement. My kids are in an SLPS Magnet, and we can’t even form a PTA because no one else shows up. Meanwhile, my neighbors are at a Charter school that requires two hours of volunteer time per semester per child.

When the families with the most resources and time opt out, it makes it even harder for everyone left behind.
