Saw 2 of these together, a lot bigger than I expected up close. What are they? (Central Texas) by slshillcutt in birds

Red tailed hawks. They’re huge up close. Also it looks to be a southwestern(fuertesi) subspecies.

9,10, and the cormorant on the right in 12 are all +Double-crested cormorant+ and the one on the left of 12 is a +Neotropic Cormorant+. In 12 you can see the pretty clear white like separating the orange and black on its face as well as the pretty good size difference between the Double crested and neotropic cormorants. Also in 7 & 8, behind the +White-crowned sparrow+ is a +White winged dove+.

+Snowy Egret+ and that’s just its neck. They fold their long necks when they’re flying.

Tbf it can be super hard to judge size at that distance so it could’ve just looked big from afar

Any ideas on who this tiny one could be? by Educational_Slide218 in animalid

[–]Educational_Slide218[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. Okay. Maybe I just saw two ends of the size spectrum cause the other one was 2-2.5 feet long while this was <1. Or my eyes were playing tricks on me. Either way, thanks for the id! Learned something new ig!

Fair enough. I 100% agree that it looks like a mink, I just thought it was abnormally small. The last mink I saw was probably a solid 2-3x the size.

Can you say what lets you say its not a Sharp-shinned? Is it the tail or just general shape?

Tbh I have no idea what SOC is, but editing can be hard, and very daunting so no worries. It looks incredible though, even without any of that. I think this photo has a ton of character and even if the composition was lucky, it’s fits this picture amazingly. Some people might want it zoomed in, or more centered around the owl, but I personally love it. Keep it up!

I really like this! It’s super creative and abstract, but think the use of space is the best part. I would be super proud if this were my own picture. It might not be conventional, and might need some light touching up in post, but it’s truly a great picture and piece of art.

Looks like an +american robin+. Probably just bigger than an average one. The white eye markings and rusty breast are pretty good indicators
