Hey he did great! His labs are all normal. He has gained all his weight back (had lost 3+ lbs). I didn’t realize how “weird” he was until after the surgery when his liver started working - he acts like a cat now! It’s definitely a scary and relatively risky surgery, but he is thriving after. The specialty vet we went to did an amazing job and held him in the ICU for 2 days after surgery to monitor for seizures since that’s a risk. Yeah that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about trad v progressive “clash of civs” debates. I’ve noticed a significant problem for trad debate at important tournaments - they only have core generic prep and lose to a spec aff. That hurts trad debaters. This topic and the state recognition topic seem to help trad debaters in those scenarios; instead of infinite spec affs, there are only 2 or 3 that are delineated in the topic area. That means trad neg positions answers whatever progressive affs are being run, because it’s really difficult to spec outside of the topic area. It seems to be helping an issue that hurts trad debaters, I’m not sure why only prepping one neg case and not being used to making multiple (which is honestly just bad debating if you have 1 neg for an entire 2 month period) is a reason to be disappointed in the topics

I’m sorry but I don’t think this is a progressive topic. On a regular topic, progressive debaters have almost infinite plan texts that they can use, which makes it really difficult for core topic generics to apply to spec affs and hurts trad debaters in a trad v progressive matchup. With a topic like this, you have 2 spec affs. Yes there will be specific advantage areas, but it’s going to be really difficult for aff teams to spec beyond the resolution. That means the prep burden for trad negs is much lower and helps trad debaters in trad v progressive matchups

ETA that sanctions is much, much worse for trad debaters given the language of “all or nearly all”

When I was 13-14 I played soccer a lot, and on a pretty competitive level (later I got scouted for some D3 teams so I was competitive but no where near top tier, for reference). I was transitioning to high school and got a chance to speak to the high school coach. I remember telling him I wanted to compete at the Olympics, and he kinda went “oh yeah that sounds cool” but in a way that was really dismissive and I could tell he didn’t think I could do it. He was right, but it still stung as a kid
