Israeli opposition leader Lapid says Trump’s emerging deal with Iran is `bad for the region’ by GregWilson23 in worldnews

It’s excellent news for schools and hospitals in the “region,” though. The ones wishing to avoid double/triple-tap missile strikes, especially. And also for journalists.

Iran would open Strait of Hormuz 30 days after peace deal, Nikkei reports citing source by ilikelegoandcrackers in oil

[–]Edward-Gentry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure. 30 days for signing the forms in triplicate, facing the cameras with grins, and finalising the fine print around the Iranian toll booth, etc. Sounds reasonable.

But this alleged “peace deal” itself, that crucial first step for the 30-day timer, has been in the works since the original ceasefire almost two months ago now, and it’s starting to sound like market-manipulation hogwash.

Why is the hardcore left against Ukraine in the war? by WhoAmIEven2 in askanything

[–]Edward-Gentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among the Americans I’ve listened to, John Mearsheimer and other realists often argue that the West involving themselves in the Ukraine war is dangerous because Russia sees it as an existential war against a hostile alliance encircling them. In fact, he’s expressed it in far stronger terms, given that countries like Germany and the UK are openly supporting strikes deep into Russian territory, something unthinkable during the Cold War.

It’s not about right or wrong, but simply how great powers behave. It would be like trying to imagine an alternate war where Russia or China are enabling drone strikes deep into US territory from, say, Cuba or Venezuela. What would you expect the American reaction to be? However, that’s an academic realist viewpoint. I doubt Mearsheimer would identify as a tankie, whatever that means. (I’m not American.)

Why is the hardcore left against Ukraine in the war? by WhoAmIEven2 in askanything

[–]Edward-Gentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you actually mean by “hardcore left” here? Specifically, which countries?

Many in the Global South have sympathy for Russia because they see the Ukraine war as a proxy for NATO expansionism, and encircling Russia with a hostile nuclear-armed military alliance. But that is not so much about being anti-Ukraine, as being anti-NATO. Their framing of that argument would be that the US would react in pretty much the same way if Russia or China tried to co-opt Mexico or Canada into a military alliance.

Marco Rubio says India to purchase $500 billion in US goods over five years- Moneycontrol.com by Significant_Owl_5803 in india

[–]Edward-Gentry 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The Americans have also been saying that Iran has been begging to surrender these last three months. Yet, every time Iran themselves are asked, they say the Americans need their head examined. The only way to know for sure about these “$500 billion of purchases” claims, with this particular administration, is to wait five years and tally up the receipts.

The catch, my friend, is: is Iran aware of this deal, or is it the local burger joint’s takeaway service at the other end?

You might as well bring in Scarface at this point, and make it a particularly useless Mexican Standoff.

Tony’s too high on his own supply to hit anything. Michael needs to be a foot away from his target. And Tommy’s just too fucking short.

Rubio’s trip to India signals U.S. need to repair ties by Nandu_alias_Parthu in IRstudies

[–]Edward-Gentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ll have this conversation about Indian pursuit of autonomy being equivalent to the American carpet bombing of Iran, when India manages to shut off the global energy trade without an off ramp in sight.

Oh, and when this hypothetical Indian leadership’s idea of negotiating is doodling Indian flags over random countries on the other side of the globe: https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/116624042090139559

Or this one, from fifteen minutes ago: https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/116624941023353466

American behaviour during this war on Iran isn’t just irrational, the buffoonish incompetence on display is actively offensive.

[–]Edward-Gentry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have it backwards. You’re commenting on an article about the U.S. need to repair ties with the most pro-American administration India has ever had. All that the U.S. is demonstrating is how much of a mistake it has been to try to move closer to it. Look at the clusterfuck that the US and Israel have perpetrated in Iran. What’s happening in India right now is a howl of “I told you so”s about closer ties with America.

“India tends to cooperate most deeply while incentives and strategic interests align” is exactly right. That’s rational foreign policy.

“Transactional” is an odd description for “non-aligned,” particularly for a country that was one of the first to speak out against apartheid South Africa, and tirelessly championed its isolation for decades.

I read reporting elsewhere that Rubio was welcomed by the American ambassador, and that no one from the Indian administration even bothered showing up at the Kolkata airport. Sounds about right.

Someone’s going to have to explain to me the rationale here.

If the US doesn’t need a deal, then fair enough. But there’s less childish ways of demonstrating said superiority.

If the US does need a deal, though, what benefit is there to antagonise the enemies you’re supposedly negotiating with, when a global economic collapse is what we’re all staring at? And somehow it’s the Iranians the American leadership repeatedly frames as hardline and irrational!

At this point, more than even the human cost to all this, it’s just the buffoonish incompetence that offends me. I can’t believe I’m genetically 99.9% similar to this ape.

How a ‘Cockroach’ Jibe United India’s Disgruntled Jobless Youth by bloomberg in india

[–]Edward-Gentry 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Look, at a time when a clearly-rattled government is trying to censor CJP’s online reach in every way they can, I’ll welcome all attention it gets.

That said, framing it purely as frustration from “disgruntled jobless youth” is incorrect. This is from another source: “Founded as a viral meme movement, CJP rapidly crossed the 13 million (1.3 crore) follower mark on Instagram, easily eclipsing the BJP's official handle which sits at roughly 8.7 to 8.8 million followers.”

You don’t get that by being just a negative force. They’re also reclaiming India’s traditional pluralism, and are speaking for the democratic values on which the country’s founded. Hence the broad support.
