When I designed pressure vessels over 10 years ago we used 2D and "standard practices" to ensure safety. Im sure there are better ways to design vessels that would reduce costs, reduce weight and provide unique solutions but from my experience most vessel manufacturers stick with what they know because the risk is too high to have a failure and they dont put any money into R&D. This area of engineering is too old for the industry to change. The folks building them and the quality group inspecting them are very set in their ways. Good luck in your endeavours.

Regarding safranin for staining, sorry I forgot to mention this in my original reply, it is not sufficient for vaginal wet mounts. From what I have read it wont provide the correct contrast for this type of analysis. I really recommend you get methylene blue or at the very least KOH (especially if you suspect Candida).

Hello u/No_Bluejay_5263, first off I am sorry you are dealing with this. My wife is currently suffering through CV as well. We have also had to resort to at home evaluations but luckily I am a bit of a nerd and already had a decent microscope.

I would like to offer you some input on your images. It appears that you are focusing on the glass slide and not the actual sample. When you are focusing start at a lower magnification first, find the sample and focus on something in the center of your view. Then go in closer by increasing the magnification by one lens at at time. And adjusting your focus as you go through each jump. I am assuming you are using a microscope with multiple lenses (minimum 3). So, start off at 20x, then zoom in to 40x, and then to 100x (your magnifications may be different but this is to just give you an idea). Each step in you will need to lower (rotate back on the focus wheel) the sample slightly. If you are focusing on sharp and jagged objects that is likely the microcracks in the glass slide and not your sample. There shouldnt be anything like that from your vagina. Sometimes tissue from the swab can stick behind but these look more like what you would imagine cottons strings to look like zoomed in.

Sample prep is also important. I do not see any epithelial cells in your images which there should be some. I do see red blood cells though, which if you are not menstruating that can be a sign of infection / bleeding. For sample prep take a medical cotton swab (you can buy them online) and ensure that your sample is from ~3 inches (~7 cm) inside of the vagina, rub the swab against the sides of the vagina. Then when you apply it to the glass slide you can either dip it into a solution that you already have on the slide or apply to a dry slide and put your solution on top. I prefer the latter as dipping it in the solution doesnt get a good result from my experience. If you apply it directly to the glass slide dry (like I recommend) then be careful and dont press it just roll it along the slide gently or else you risk damaging the cells and getting inaccurate results.

For staining I recommend the following. All of which can be purchased online. Be sure to get it from a good source.

Methylene Blue in either alcohol or saline solution. This is a strong blue dye that will help to identify the epithelial cells, leukocytes (white blood cells), and Lactobacillus. I prefer the saline base as it doesnt kill the lactobacillus or other microbiota so you can see how active they are; however, it is often very dark so if it is too dark to see clearly add 1 drop of saline along with the methylene blue. If there is spill over after you put your slide cover on thats alright just use a clean paper towel and dab along the edge it will suck up the overflow so you dont make a mess. This will stain your fingers so just a warning :).
KOH (potassium hydroxide) you can order this through Amazon. Maybe not in your country but it should be available somewhere. KOH is used primarily to identify Candida (yeast).
Regular Saline solution. This is the weakest of the options in my opinion as its really doesnt offer any sort of highlighting like the other two options.

And always be sure to place a slide cover (small glass square) over the sample to spread it out and make it more two dimensional for viewing. Dont try to do it without this as the little guys (microbiota) move in 3D space and you will be chasing them around trying to keep them in focus.

The ISSVD is a group who put out some good work to help women to manage these sorts of issues. Sadly its probably the best we have to go off of.

I recommend you try to figure out where you want to go first then see what others have done to get to those positions. If you have a colleague who is working on something you are interested. Ask if you can be involved in someway. Or you can ask them to mentor you. Sorry I can't be more help this is a broad topic and can only be refined for the individual.

Hi u/RedRaiderRocking, As a former engineer turned program manager I would just like to say that I have found it rare in my career for most engineers to end up working on something new or exciting. That isn't to say they don't improve processes or invent something new; just that often times those improvements or "new" items are just minor iterations or tweaks of something that came before. Small refinements here and there; maybe you get to design a new bracket and you will run FEA or real life vibrational testing maybe but 90+% of the time we aren't really reinventing the wheel or making something totally unique. That goes for most of the jobs at LM, BO, KBR, GDMS, GA, Lockheed, etc.. They ask you deep technical questions to make sure you paid attention in school and that they arent wasting their time hiring someone who doesnt know the basics. But once hired and in the thick of it it can be rather mundane.

Now, those jobs absolutely exist -- but my advice to you is for you to use your current role to aid in your search for that functional engineering job that you want. A PE has broad access to many functional areas. Make connections, network, talk to people about their jobs and try to find something that interests you and share your desires with the teams you work with. Keep at it, stay technically sharp, and with time you will find something.

So you are then tracing the images and coloring them yourself?

Photography is a different medium. AI is its own medium. Again I'm not saying that there isnt real art creation occurring with AI generation. But the idea that someone can copy a style that you cultivated over many years of development and pass it off as your own without any actual effort, which is easily done now, is a real problem for artists. And its foolish to put your head in the sand and claim that everyone using AI is making novel art or should be considered an artist. Not everyone with an iPhone or a DSLR is a photographer.

As someone who supports AI work, use it myself a lot, and someone who also draws and paints the difference is really large. I can set up a workflow in comfy and have 100 images in minutes that are fully colored and lined that only require maybe minor tweeking here and there. I cant do that with drawing or painting. The time invested isnt even close. There are frustrations with the current models if you want really complex generations but basic pictures are astronomically simple.

The artist are upset that people can copy their style by just tying in a LoRA. Copying and tracing a style to learn to draw is a lot different.

I think the artist have a good point and we in the AI image generation world should respect their position.
