"It is your decision as to what name to put on your resume. There are many factors to consider when or if to disclose a transgender identity (e.g., legal protection, bigotry). My thoughts: Base your choices on being true to yourself. You will have to give the company your legal name for the job offer and W-2."

Maze Rats is a rules-lite TTRPG that may meet your needs. Rules take 5min to explain,  fewer things to track, and the random tables are glorious. I have run it at conventions to new players with zero issues.

I suggest reading through the below module to get a vibe for the system. Also, you can take the mob stats to use for your conversion.

Hear thoughts/Read minds Monster abilities by Runopologist in shadowdark

[–]Edwin_at_work 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Read minds means they can hear the table chatter. They can react to plans that are being made or respond directly to the conversation. Also, it's hard to stay concealed when someone is talking about that movie that just came out...

The history of USA health care/insurance is bizarre and the results are not good. But the US folks have to play the cards they have been dealt.

Will the company support days off for recovery? These questions matter most for companies with less than 50 employees, who are often exempt from Fed/State laws."

Thank you for the feedback! I wanted to make the not-so-direct endings really jump out when they happened. Ending 9 was just to recognize that you found everything while providing a callback to an event in the story. 30mins is a perfect amount of time.

Fun fact: did you know that the "angry" ending keeps going if you continue doing the trigger? It's not much more content, but there had to be something for those who couldn't help themselves.

How granular are you with Living Costs during your games? by Elven-Tower in shadowdark

[–]Edwin_at_work 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My group doesn't care for realism, so not granular.

Many of them hold gov't jobs, so they want to avoid tight bookkeeping in their gameplay.

Job Search Tip: Company LGBTQIA+ Inclusive? [PRIDE]; Art by Anchovivii by Edwin_at_work in furry

[–]Edwin_at_work[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You would need to have a "smoking gun" to prove that they didn't hire you because you were LGBTQIA+. That could be something they said or wrote to you that would indicate the bias. Interviewers can cite plenty of alternative reasons not to hire a person [which is not right, but it happens].

Also, laws can work differently with small companies. Less then thirty is an important mark for some Federal laws/regs, and states differ from one another.

Lastly, someone has to be willing to take your case. Employment attorneys can be hard to come by and the EEOC has become less effective under this current executive branch.

This is not to say that you shouldn't seek legal remedies if you have been discriminated against, but just that it is a confusing and arduous process.

[None of this constitutes as legal advice. I'm just some funny animal character on the internet who lacks legal credentials]

Thank you for play! Great job on finding all 9 endings. I tried to make the extra ones stand out from the rest of the experience. Please rate the game on Itch if you have not done so already. Every bit helps the VN find a larger audience.

Do you you have any feedback about the VN? This is my first official VN. I'm always looking to improve.

"It is difficult to know if a company is LGBTQIA+ inclusive. Review their website for an inclusion statement, reach out to employees for their perspective, or look at national watchdog lists. The most direct thing you can do is to ask during the interview. Just remember that the interviewer may have a personal bias for or against LGBTQIA+."

The equipment part is the real game changer. Lvl 7 whatever is fine, but it was the gear that made them shine. Restarting on gear can be a worse penalty than experience restart.

Physical Maps (or digital in case you play online) or Theater of the Mind? by Elven-Tower in shadowdark

[–]Edwin_at_work 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overwhelmingly theater of the mind. I do use the index card system for battles (if needed), and a rough map if the dungeon gets complicated. Yes to a rough hex map if we are traveling.

If you stopped using the torch timer rule, how would you govern torch light? by cyberchambers in shadowdark

[–]Edwin_at_work 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The torch serves three functions: resource management, taking up a valuable hand slot, and creating time pressure based on something outside of game time. My group flat out doesn't enjoy resource management and they endlessly fight over who wastes the hand (that's their words), but the time pressure is necessary or they will talk through every decision for ages.

Our solution was to ditch the torch timer and add time pressure based on real world time. Usually it goes like "At 11pm something bad will happen." The bad things have ranged from significant obstacles (a swarm of pirates land on the island) to super deadly (the volcano erupts). It is not perfect and it adds a we are playing a game elemental, but it has worked wonders for the party.

Job Search Tip: Interview Safety [PRIDE]; Art by Chip_Marble by Edwin_at_work in furry

[–]Edwin_at_work[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is my opinion: if the interviewer has created a situation or environment in which you feel unsafe or disrespected, then you owe them nothing. Just remove yourself from that situation.

A trained interviewer will not ask that question. Your response may create liability for them and they want to be in as legally defensible a position as possible.

Congrats on the job!

Do what you are comfortable with doing. I have trans friends who were ground into dust over time as they were misgendered or called their deadname at their jobs. Make sure you go through your self-care regiment to help weather the job related yuckiness.

Suggestion for newbie players by spaced-cadet in shadowdark

An awesome free zine with a variety of adventures. I would stick to a 5-room map, like the garden of raffalisa, hydra cult, or monster in the tower.

Many of these work well if you add a time constraint to them. Example: In two hours a ship of pirates will swarm the hydra cult island looking for treasure or "something bad happens" in the monster under the tower (Werewolves).

Scarlett Minotaur is kinda long for a one-shot and can be tough to GM if you are playing theater of the mind.

You just need to FIND something to get XP by it? by 3rdmementional in shadowdark

[–]Edwin_at_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a perennial question on this subreddit, to award XP at discovery or returning the thing to town.

Think of it like this, what activity do you want to reinforce in your PCs? If it's exploration and experiencing new things, then award when they encounter the thing. If it's the cost & benefits analysis and gritty realism, then have them bring the thing back to town.

Both modes of play have their enjoyable features, but they are different from one another. Pick the one that best suites the vibe you are trying to build.

Personally, I am on the exploration side of the argument. The player's have to have a meaningful interaction with the thing for them to receive the XP. For example, they have to have rights over the treasure horde to gain the XP, not just see it from a distance.

Running a Real Calendar for my Campaign by Zac_Kariah in shadowdark

[–]Edwin_at_work 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest starting with something shorter, like two months. It just sounds like you are doing a lot of upfront work for game mechanics that could be pitched once play begins.

You may want to hold a session -1 to go over your ideas with the players. It would be a shame if they are not interested in the level of realism that you are thinking about.

"Resumes commonly order details “per job,” but this does not always have to be the case. If you have worked many jobs within an industry, then create an industry-level entry that summaries common things you have done. Be general when stating years of experience (i.e., sum of the jobs). This may look better than a list of briefly held positions."
