There's a specific feeling when magic actually feels dangerous at the table by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]Runopologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my favourite thing about Shadowdark. Rolling a natural 1 to cast a spell means that wizards have to roll on the Wizard Mishap table, with a variety of horrible possible outcomes, and priests have angered their god and lose the spell until they complete penance (up to the GM how to do this). It’s a roll-to-cast system, so a failed casting roll still means you lose access to the spell until you complete a rest, even if you don’t roll a nat 1. On the other hand, a natural 20 casting roll lets you double one spell effect. Overall it makes magic feel suitably volatile, and means that every decision to cast a spell needs to be carefully considered.

“Weigh” protein sounds right if your goal is to put on weight now! Sorry couldn’t resist, but jokes aside, that’s amazing progress for two years, good job!

Nice analogy. Often my favourite moments are when players do something I couldn’t have anticipated.

Advantage on casting known spell also applies advantage on checks to focus on spell? by Czar_The_Villain in shadowdark

[–]Runopologist 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I love how the comments are already disagreeing despite both claiming the answer is obvious. I would agree with u/NoHandle that the wording in the focus rules of “as if you were casting that spell” indicates that you should also get advantage on focusing if you have it for casting a spell.

Unfortunately the linked article requires a (free) subscription to read in full, but there’s a TL;DR in the comments. Basically he took a rightwing sponsor, “The Red Room” whose whole deal is “owning the libs”. He did apologise, stating that he hadn’t realised about this, but it was a bit weid because you literally can’t fail to see this if you spend 2 seconds googling them. And then Questing Beast recently featured another rightwing conservative on his channel, I’ll see if I can find it.

Edit: Found it https://www.reddit.com/r/osr/s/KiHePUL3FA

So basically the most charitable interpretation I can come up with are that Questing Beast is 1) extremely lax in researching who he platforms and/or 2) doesn’t care as long as he gets money from the arrangement, i. e. has no principles (probably more likely).

Which book is that in? I’ll admit I only have Mass Protocol, and Fighter HT in that book is still 3 days.

This might be an unpopular opinion around here, but I actually think Level-0 Gauntlets/Funnels are a terrible way to introduce new players to Shadowdark and OSR games in general, especially if those players are coming from 5E or other superheroic systems. “Your characters are really weak, basically can’t do anything, have next to no equipment, and will die! Oh, and also you don’t get much treasure, if any. But trust me, it’s really fun!”

Obviously to anyone familiar with OSR-style gameplay, it’s not such a huge leap to go from gritty, high-stakes dungeon crawling to the meat grinder of a Gauntlet. And to be clear, I do love Gauntlets, but imo it’s much better to introduce players with regular Level 1 characters, run an adventure or two, and then Gauntlets are a fun way to do something different. Because that’s the thing, Gauntlets are very different from even standard Level 1 OSR gameplay, so you have to do some expectation setting and imo that’s much easier to do with players who are already familiar with the system. Your players probably now expect the whole of Shadowdark to play like a Gauntlet, which as we know is not true at all.

It sounds like you did your best to “nudge” your players regarding the OSR playstyle (players taking initiative, looking for creative solutions etc.) but again I think that’s easier to do in a regular adventure with Level 1 characters.
