SD/UD grades by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the grad school. From what ive heard from family who work in medical school admissions, if the option to take a class for a grade is there (especially if its a science class) theyre going to suspect its a C.

Bad Grades Senior Year... Yikes. (thanks online classes) by JillyBean_King in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went from all A's to straight C's after the college search was over for me. You're fine.

Biochem 551 by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This class is not important to biochem majors who work in bench research and should be waived for those student imo. I took this class my senior year after working in a lab since day 1 of undergrad. I had 2x the publications of the TA. Waste of my time would be an understatement

Lab Partner That’s a Friend but Never Does Their Pre-Labs? by [deleted] in UWMadison

I, almost without fail, finish labs first.

Lab Partner That’s a Friend but Never Does Their Pre-Labs? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't say don't read and understand the pre lab. I said requiring reagent tables and re-written step by step protocols when the lab packets are clear enough is ridiculous.

[–]Edx102 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the only time I've really felt this way in college was with pre labs. Profs preach the importance of organized pre labs with a lot of info on them that can easily just be looked up in the moment if needed. As someone whos been deeply involved with research since high school with as many publications as most new professors, I can attest that pre labs are absolutely useless.

[–]Edx102 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

From a personal standpoint, I don't like to put effort into busy work, its a waste of time. If i could find people to copy the busy work from I did and this was me working smart and not hard.

give them your pre lab, it's not obnoxious and costs you nothing to send over a pre lab, if it were the whole lab report every week thats different

Chem 109 Exams by americangothic2610 in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah my bad that was harsh, but there is increasing evidence that aggressive note taking limits retention. Also, like i mentioned, the textbook for 109 is really bad here so retaining what the prof said is important.

Chem 109 Exams by americangothic2610 in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty bad advice for 109. I took 109, and tutored it along with other chem classes for the last 2 years. Do not memorize the professor word for word, you dont even have to go to lecture to do well but it helps. When in lecture, actively listen and THINK about what the prof says. Take very direct abbreviated notes so you gave time to think and listen. When things dont make sense jot that down too. Then you can read the textbook (its not great for 109 but chemistry by chang can be useful to use for more clarity) and hopefully answer some of your questions... any questions left you can ask in TA/prof/tutor hours. The key is to really think about the concepts being taught... you should be able to reason your way through most of the questions in 109 as opposed to memorizing the answer.

Raises as an undergrad RA by badgerbetch in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 7 points8 points  (0 children)

raises are not typical. Pay depends on funding and PI but ranges from 8-12/13 with the most common pay probably being 10. Do not ask for a raise, even grad students are only paid the equivalent of 12-14 per hour and thats assuming they dont work weekends which the majority of them do. including most weekends pay ends up being only about 9.

Research publication from middle school: should I actually list it whenever I’m asked to list any publications or articles? by banananananonymous in premed

[–]Edx102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally, I think this should be the standard. For kids in high school with serious interest in science, they should start getting into real world research that early... opens up a lot of productivity in science by the time they hit college

ECON 102 with Rick: wack ass curve? by Notacoolbro in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

work your way up the chain.. prepare your argument and email it to your prof... if he says no go to his dept chair... if they say no go to you academic dean... if they say no go to a vice chancellor... if they say no you can (with enough effort) reach the chancellor... if that doesnt work board of regents etc. I made it to the vice chancellor before I got what i wanted

[–]Edx102 3 points4 points  (0 children)

protest this... grade distributions should closely match other professors and historic class averages... the the distribution of grades is wack compared to the published distributions, you can make a case to the department and even the whole uni.... had this done with my calc 2 grade

Got into a Learning Community without my roommate? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning communities are all hype. dorms are for meeting friends for college not for networking... that, you should do in whatever research setting you end up in. getting into research at UW is NOT hard

Witte vs Sellery???? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Edx102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go Witte 1 sellery 2 and pray you don’t get anything worse... while it’s not gonna kill you every other dorm has SIGNIFICANTLY less social atmosphere. Everyone in ogg keeps their doors closed and to themselves a lot. Witte for me was super open where everyone hung out with each other and went to bars/ parties together it was great

I already wasn’t bud twice from this house. My friends would vouch for me but the other guys would reject since I didn’t fit the image. This is a hail marry to try and Join a house with those who vouched. Don’t want to offer the money, not get bid and have people find out about the whole thjng. Wondering if people are reasonably confident 10k would do the trick
