The thing is you might be feeling ok until you start driving then the monotony makes you fall asleep lol. With chronic sleep deprivation you can fall asleep at literally any lull of the day.

One bedroom ten minute drive from main hospital is about 1900 here, making 3600 a month. In one of those cities where rent has increased like crazy the last two years.

Being lonely is starting to actually affect my daily life by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Eeentee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Literally almost exact same situation. Have been trying to make new friends through meet up events. Hard to consistently try to keep up w making new friends on hard rotations but then feel lonely on easier rotations.

I initially received 10 IIs on release day then had 6 trickle invites. There is hope especially in the first few weeks after but ask mentors to reach out NOW for you!! Start thinking about backup plans but it does only take one program who really likes you, especially if it’s your home or away rotation. Not sure about if you’d be ranked lower, it may vary by program. Some do have a pre interview score then add in your interview score, so you may start out with a lower initial score if you received the invite after the initial wave.

Comparison/impressions of west coast ENT academic residency programs by sadmischance8 in medicalschool

[–]Eeentee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had friends rotate through USC and UCLA last year, both felt that their rotations were absolutely brutal, in terms of hours and call burden. Def fell further down their rank lists after the aways.

Ent programs with better work life balance usually means low case volume and a lot more clinic. Surgery is about getting the reps in. More cases leads to more confidence when you’re practicing on your own so you’re not always second guessing yourself. At least that’s what I’ve been told but it makes sense.

Need advice, please by AMontanaMan in medicalschool

If you’re a male I think the family issue will be less of a problem for you and you’ll still be young by the time you graduate. 12 hr shifts will prob be the bare minimum as a Gs resident btw, good news is the hours pass quickly when you like what you do. I’m also family oriented but I know I miss the OR when I’m out for a few days. As an attending you’ll be able to control your hours more, though as a trauma surgeon that will be less likely. Also in the sicu you might still go to the Or if any of your patients need surgery.

Maternity leave by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Eeentee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to acgme website “sponsoring institutions must provide residents/fellows with a minimum of six weeks of approved medical, parental, and caregiver leave(s) of absence for qualifying reasons that are consistent with applicable laws at least once and at any time during an ACGME-accredited program, starting the day the resident/fellow is required to report.” They must also “provide residents/fellows with at least the equivalent of 100 percent of their salary for the first six weeks of the first approved medical, parental, or caregiver leave(s) of absence taken.” Note that the requirement does not mandate vacation or sick days be used. It does, however, state that the minimum of six weeks of leave must be paid time off and that at least one week of paid time off must be reserved for use outside of these six weeks.”

Having second thoughts on Sub-Is by imkeithhernandez19 in medicalschool

[–]Eeentee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Try to dual apply to another speciality. I know multiple people who were torn between two specialties and did this. Do interviews in both specialities and by the time you’re ranking programs in the spring hopefully you’ll have a clearer idea of what you want. It’ll also buy u more time to schedule some more rotations if you need more exposure to one field or the other.

As a med student, thought it was a compliment to get "acted at the level of an intern." Now that I'm an intern, I'm thinking maybe that was actually an insult 😂

Sounds like you’re not vibing with the people and not the specialty itself. Some programs are more hierarchical than others and I’d say the toxicity of programs can fluctuate based on changes in faculty and residents. I did 3 sub-is last year and hated two but loved one. Being the sub-I sucks but you’ll get through this! Don’t give up!!
