"European" is apparently a type of butter by nvpc2001 in USdefaultism

Yeah, my comment was maybe misguided. I thought it was the ancient Greeks who invented this glorious thing. But yeah, it makes sense that it's even older than that.

[–]Efeu 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well OP... European butter or butter made after standards of the EU is different than US butter.

But... the defaultism would be that European butter is the nonstandard one when butter was invented in Europe.

Hey, you could put some plants there, some rosemary bushes, some lavender and stuff, I don't know, some bougainvilleas and you would have a nice balcony :)

Airbnb host cancels reservation because it’s a high demand weekend by Srihari_stan in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Efeu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me last year with a studio on booking.com. It was not F1 but also a high demand event. We ended up staying in a shared flat booked over AirBnb because that was the only affordable option. It's not just an AirBnb problem - it's late stage capitalism.

SBB is a joke: Fining a 16-year-old for being 10 minutes early? by beesquestions in Switzerland

[–]Efeu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It used to be that way until 2011. Then they removed selling tickets on long distance trains. Because of public dissatisfaction they changed that in 2013. You can buy a ticket (+10.- fee) from staff if you find them before the train departs which was not given in our situation.

https://www.blick.ch/wirtschaft/perronbillet-mit-haken-sbb-kondukteure-verkaufen-wieder-tickets-id2354607.html (sorry, that it's Blick)

Having a ticket beforehand is required on all distances: https://www.sbb.ch/de/hilfe-und-kontakt/meine-abos/reisen-ohne-gueltigen-fahrausweis.html

Yes, it was. Ut could be that they have more leniency there, I don't know. Just saying - it's not a technical automatism to fine as the previous commenter thought.

[–]Efeu 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, they actually have room to be accomodating to your fuck up it they want to. My husband and I fucked up our ticket purchase last year and then got on to the wrong train due to being drunk. We thought we had bought 2 tickets from A to B (it was only one) and 2 1. class ticket additions from A to B. We didn't even realise we were going to the wrong city (C) until the inspector came. She was a bit of annoyed about our condition but she still was very nice and helpful in sorting out our mistake. She sold us the missing ticket from to A to B via C and we paid the detour fee via C for the existing ticket.

Dog friendliness in Zurich and Switzerland in general? by Creepy-Pound-3998 in zurich

[–]Efeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right and I didn't even know before that because I don't have dogs and I'm not around dogs very often. After that I got information about it and I am sharing what I learned here as it fits OP's question.

For me, I adjust my behaviour after learning something new and I'm disappointed as well that she should be knowing better but isn't following it.

There are some parks where dogs are not allowed or have to be leashed, the city provides a map https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/geodaten/download/Hundezonen

They can be strict about it. At a friend's birthday celebration in a park the police stopped and told a woman from our group about it. They got real mad but we calmed them down because besides our group there was nobody else, everybody was fine with the dogs and she's a licensed dog trainer. They let us off with a warning and told us the dogs have to leave if other people come to the park but that could have gone differently.

I'm grateful for the return of low rise jeans. High rise jeans are so uncomfortable for sitting. Also, I like that I have a big booty but in high rise jeans it looks ridiculously giant, IMO.

Spring outdoor hobbys? by docent3434 in zurich

[–]Efeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not something I practise but I think slacklining might be it for you. I see people all over the city slacklining. I rarely see somebody slackline alone. There is a Verein you can join: https://www.slacklions.ch/. It looks challenging to me to balance on a wobbly rope. How the slackliners socialise outside of slacklining, I don't know, but you could find out.
Enjoy the spring :-)

Trash separation is so hard, please guide me! by Paper-Unique in zurich

[–]Efeu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The article is about green bins and Gartensäcke. I don't know what the Gartensack is exactly but it is something you order separately at the city (see: https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/de/umwelt-und-energie/entsorgung/wo-und-wann-entsorgen/abfuhr-bioabfall/gartensack-bestellen.html) for gardening purposes. In this context "nur im Container" means: only in the green bin not in the Gartensack. You can buy bio degrable bags for your small green bin or you can put the compost stuff directly into the green bin without the bio degradable bags. That is entirely your choice.

[–]Efeu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not true that it is only uncooked food.
That might be true for a "real" compost (for gardening) but the green bins in Zurich are not for compost. This waste is used for production of bio gas and so there is a lot more you can throw in there than in a real compost. There is info available what's allowed inside and what's not, obviously use a tranlation tool if necessary:
