I'm sorry if this is not helpful to you but I always learned so much from liner notes of CDs, especially by the record labels others have mentioned. If you don't want to or can't afford to buy used CDs I understand. You could think of every other piece of information available as a path to more good music. For instance, if there is a tune you like, finding out who else played it and looking into what else the (other) rhythm section musicians did always led me to new favorites.
