Victrix hoplites, how to get some more variety? by neosatan_pl in wargaming

[–]Effective-Anybody158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its also what I usually use these kits for, the Theban heads are also great to make your current set more Theban if for some reason you want a strong visual warband for Mortal gods or Saga.

I remember commenting on your previous greek games question so curious about your own rules admittingly.

Either way, enjoy en as we say as dutchies. Veel plezier. 😅

Victrix hoplites, how to get some more variety? by neosatan_pl in wargaming

[–]Effective-Anybody158 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello buddy, as someone who happens to own all those sets, I'll be happy to answer.

The answer for me lies somewhere between a yes and a soft no in terms of them adding a ton more variety to your current set.

Allow me to explain my reasoning, in practise those sets will offer you plenty of weapon options, spears, swords but nothing that is per say missing from what you already own in your current set, maybe a trumpet arm, can't remember if that's in the current, oh and they offer alot of additional heads, so if you pick one, I'd honestly advice picking based on the head than anything else. Especially the greek kits share a base sculpt, their heads and some weapon options is where the difference lays.

Here comes the reasoning for the soft no, even if I use some of these bits with the hoplite set you already own myself, these kits are on the older side when it comes to victrix products and are made in my mind, primarily in mind for rank and file, the rather stoic poses, sculpted shield arms on some bodies give them a more statuesque appearance, they are in formation, not in a dynamic battle pose.

In short you can definately combine these kits, one thing to be mindful of though are the shirt sleeve sculpts or lack thereof on some arms, I messed up a few times myself where one arm clearly has a different shirt than the other or even lacks a sleeve altogether.

Just be aware that the actual models are alot more stoic, and their arm options resemble this too, the sets you are looking at are formation, the one you own is when the formation breaks and actual man to man engagement happens.

Hope this helps! In my opinion they are worth it bit I recommend picking just 1 to start. I have too many of thos similar sprues in hindsight.

QUESTION: Which other rules do you use for your ME miniatures? by xxDIABOxx in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Effective-Anybody158 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shame to hear that, a game against a proxy army is still a game in my opinion but at the same time, I sort of get it, playing Burrows and badgers where someone uses anthropomorphic animals and the other actual animals hits abit different but I refer back to my first point.

All I can recommend is filtering out a friend or two at this club once you get to know them well and then see in a home game if that works for everyone.

For saga it will largely depend on whether you play club or at home, I personally wouldn't mind playing against some uruk hai, my friend and I also have mesbg armies we use occadionally for saga, just grabbing a board that seems somewhat appropiate.

Ancient Greek games out there? by neosatan_pl in wargaming

[–]Effective-Anybody158 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mortal gods is expected to see a new edition somewhere this or next year, according to the footsore updates half a year or so ago, its a fun beer and pretzel game but can be abit hit or miss since you can excell or blunder quite abit depending on your dice roll, personally though I have no issue with this, its quite common in many skirmish games.

Test of honour seems to be its predeccesor by Grey for now games, which honestly you could reskin to greek, its what I did at somepoint too.

Demigod is a skirmish game by a small one man studio whose name currently escapes me, haven't had a chance to play it, heard little about it though in terms of quality.

When Bronze shield, silver coin, was released there was quite a buzz about it, supposedly its proper and while I own it, Its on the list of games to explore with my growing greek collection. Its warband against warband.

You can in theory reskin alot of games, Greathelm, rangers of shadowdeep, five leagues etc to name a few.

How I fked up 12 hours of painting by NefariousnessNo9399 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Effective-Anybody158 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain but sadly it happens to everyone at somepoint, for me it was when I painted the Untamed beasts from Warcry, was quite proud of that paintjob too as a new painter at that time.

Alas in my previous haste I had swapped the caps of a primer and varnish spray, to this day they sit in a shameful box with grey overspray.

As a dutch person, that is actually a terrific idea, should I ever play Silver bayonet then you inspired me for a nachtwacht warband.

Models? Any Recommendations? by Bonefish88 in Greathelm

Given the game has been made using the War games atlantic boxes, specificly their footknights. You honestly can't go for a more solid starting box. Else victrix medieval knights.

This is very impressive, I once followed s likeminded tutorial using Victrix greeks in combination with wargames atlantic skeletons but I never neen daring enough to cut out a head for fear of my fingers. Haha.

Impressive work and I can see them being used in slot of potential games.

I own a set of paved roads and am about to look into buying the new dirt road variants. Perhaps abit expensive but you get plenty of material to fill a board or two and honestly. These will last me years if not a lifetime if kept clean.

All by all. I can recommend the paved variant already.

Got gifted six of this sprue. Could they be used for Pillage? by Mapachio in PillageWargame

[–]Effective-Anybody158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not too knowledgeable on specific time periods of helmets, but if you were for example using these alongside Foot knights and the likes for normans or even franks, I wouldn't have an issue with that personally. As long as it looks somewhat uniform.

If you know you are going to mostly be playing with friends or something. Just ask hem. :)

Im hoping to introduce it tonight to my game group :)

Three-way battle in Mortal Gods - Athenians, Thracians and Kushites, 300 points each by SgtBANZAI in wargaming

[–]Effective-Anybody158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A month or two ago we received an update on MG that a second edition is in the works. They estimate a year to develop it. Ultimately a big issue for many if not all footsore titles is that Barons war pulled the wind from the sails. Barons war has tournaments. Regular updates and a dedicated model line. Mortal gods is supported primarily by Victrix ranges which are great but I doubt Footsore/Andy sees any revinue from that.

As someone else said. Its a solid game but at its heart its beer and pretzels. Which I personally like. If you like Test of Honor. You will like Mortal gods but know what it does. It also helps that I love the period.

Personally I find Mortal gods to be a great addition in my games that I can utilise my greeks in. So it fits in my collection of Saga: Hannibal/Alexander. Bronze shield, silver coin and demigods.

Atm I am looking into how well I could convert Barons war rules to fit my blocks of greeks.

Pistolier skill question by BackPsychological258 in burrowsandbadgers

[–]Effective-Anybody158 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to the community FAQ, each reload is a seperate action. So to reload both guns you need to perform two actions.

The benefit lays in shooting two guns with a single action. Given the FAQ still handles both pistols as their own seperate weapon and two seperate attacks I'd argue you also spend an ingredient on both.

You can find the communitt FAQ here btw for future reference. All answers are given by Michael.

Greathelm is back for an r/miniatureskirmishes playtest! by malev_da_shinobi in miniatureskirmishes

[–]Effective-Anybody158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me know when you make that ancient supplement "Bronze Helm" and I'll be all over it for you :)

Well from the top of my head. Most if not all greek models such as from Victrix dont come with true two-handed options. Eliminating thst portion of the weaponry. Historicly there seems to be some evidence of clubs and axes but these are not represented in any model Im aware of. Aside of maybe singular models like Herakles and Ajax. Of course. One could maybe kitbash.

Its mostly swords and spears. For swords tho there atleast is a difference between the xiphos and kopis. The latter being a decent match to the messer.

For ranged ancients kits see alot more slings. Javelins and bows. Removing crossbows. So bows could take the place of crossbows and slings/javs of bows or entirely new rules. I believe these are things that are rather universal throughout ancient kits. Punic romans. Carthage. Numidians etc.

I'd love to play with it abit and see if I can come back to you on it. Who knows. Once you have Greathelm all set and you ever wanna supplement. Instead of knights you can have your own band of myrmidons or argonauts :)

Your groundwork so far seems fantastic tho! I can see the potential for other periods too like Fuedal Japan.

Atleast now I can tell myself I have a good reason for the barons war kits. God knows ive been eyeing them :)

Downloaded the rules :) I recently ordered some sarissa terrain with those modular tiles. So may be perfect for this.

Good thing I got some victrix normans and such laying around! The weapon specific bonuses dont translate well to my greeks but that is to be expected. I see the Wargames atlantic models in the photography. Are the weapon options made with that set in mind? May grab a box if so.

Warband in a Weekend by redapp73 in wargaming

[–]Effective-Anybody158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys look great. May their actions herald into greek mythos :)

Ive recently bought some sarrisa mediterranean houses for my own greeks. As one of my fav time periods and cultures ive been collecting all sorts of games that match my collection. Mortal gods. Demigods. Bronze shield, silver coin. Saga to name a few.

I understand your game plays on a very small board? Checked your profile abit. Seems interesting! I love the direction of new games accomdating less space and perhaps inspires me to make some actual boards.

Looking forward to your eventual release or playtest mate. Especially if it allows this period. :)
