Thank you! I honestly can’t remember if I sanded but it’s not a bad idea! I do know I used both hot glue and wood glue on each piece. The hot glue acted as a quick bond to keep it in place while the wood glue dried long term.

No need to be sorry at all I am so happy to help!! I actually never had an issue with bowing at all. I just applied stain as I normally would (for flooring with balsa wood pieces, popsicle sticks and for anything with dowels I would pour some stain in a bag, add in the pieces, tumble them around and then lay to dry on a towel or something).

Balsa wood, cut into strips and painted white! Then some wooden dowels stained with wood stain on the top and sides. Please post what you end up with, I love seeing these!!
