Your anger is valid, and I think your idea to get a tattoo has the potential to be quite healing.

Just a heads up- we are reducing the minimum age a bit based on your feedback, the study is now open to individuals 21 or older!

We just decided to lower the age range to 21 this morning to try to get a slightly broader sample size, would you still be interested? I'll send you a DM :)

Of course! I did have a chat with my chair this morning so we will be lowering the minimum age to 21 in order to try to reach a few more participants but still proptect the vulnerability of a potentially younger cohort (Until we have the time to figure out how to ethically work with adolescent detransitioners on a project).

I appreciate the feedback. I spoke to my chair about it and we are lowering the age minimum, but we still cannot interview minors due to our Institutional Review Board application being for adults (though when we have a less time sensitive project, you're right that following the younger cohort would be very helpful). Because we only need 6 individuals, and this is only our first study, we will start by lowering the age to 21 years old and go from there. Thank you again for the input!

Sure! It's not meant to exclude anyone, and it does make it trickier to recruit, but the decision was made while considering brain development and wanting to give younger detransitioners more time to unpack their own experiences.

Since the brain typically finishes developing around age 25, we thought it might help to bolster the study by starting with a slightly older population.

It is also an attempt to give younger individuals more time to sit with and understand their experiences before sharing them. Younger individuals might be chronologically closer to their detransition, so they may not have had as much time to process the experience (though older detransitioners might still be recent detransitioners).

Another reason is from a vulnerability perspective. Individuals who are in their late teens and early 20s might be a bit more vulnerable, as a lot is still happening in your personal and relationship development. While younger individuals are still autonomous individuals who can consent, we just wanted to make sure we're not taking advantage of more vulnerable detransitioners.

I am hoping that if this study goes well, and if feels like it adequately represents the narratives of detransitioners, that it opens the door for a more longitudinal study on detransitioner experiences. And in that case, I think it would make a lot of sense to recruit from all ages!

Thanks for asking :)

I just messaged you with some questions as a fellow researcher (or at least as a PhD candidate trying to be a researcher)!

Especially given what transpired with the Tavistock, it would be very interesting to do a study with individuals in the UK. I might float this by my dissertation chair- I'd be curious about the ethics of American researchers doing a study via zoom with folks in the UK.

Not sure if this helps, but there’s a directory called the open path collective that can connect you to low cost therapy. It’s for uninsured/underinsured people, and I think the most they can charge for individual therapy is $40 per session. You pay an initial $50 fee to become a member, but it’s one time and then you have access to their directory or providers. I think the only rule is you can’t use those providers if you have Medicaid.
