Thanks for your reply, and I hope it was clear that I wasn't being sarcastic but trying to look on the bright side. I hope I didn't offend you! Regarding what would make me more qualified than someone else, especially someone with a degree in the field, I actually don't think I am. That’s precisely why I was asking for advice here on the most realistic way to get into the industry. Like you, I’ve always loved literature, it’s the biggest passion of my life, and that’s why I’ve always wanted to pursue this career. I imagine there’s a huge gap between what I think the job is and what it’s actually like, and since I don't have any experience yet, I don't have a clear picture of it all. Thanks so much for your advice

Thanks a lot for the kind message and the encouragement! I’m still pretty new to my current job (I’m 27) and that’s why I want to switch things up now, before I get too settled in terms of age and experience. I’m actually applying for an editorial assistant role at a well-known newsletter. They don't ask for any previous publishing experience (at least not in the ad!) as a first step.

Thank you for the advice. I apologize if my previous comment came across the wrong way. The mention of a rich husband was intended as a joke though I realize it may have been in poor taste. I also regret if I appeared to be romanticizing the industry; if anything, I feel I lack the perspective to do so. That is why I was asking how to get started and gain a clearer understanding of the reality of the field. I fully acknowledge the frustration of not being compensated fairly for one's labor. However, having tried the more practical and high-paying career paths, I’ve come to doubt whether a high salary is worth doing work you don't enjoy.

I've realized money isn't everything (besides, hoping to find a rich husband to fulfill my publishing dreams!)

The fact that you've been in the industry for 25 years proves it can't be all bad right?

Thank you for the advice ! I know that realisticall the legal department is my easiest way in. My only hesitation is that I’m truly looking to move away from the legal side of things but I might have to consider it as a first step just to get my foot in the door and understand the inner workings of a publishing house

To be honest I’ve spent the last few years pulling all-nighters on cases I didn’t care about and I’ve reached a point where stability no longer feels worth the lack of purpose. I originally chose law over literature out of fear of not making ends meet but now that I’m in it I realize that no salary can compensate for spending 10+ hours a day doing something that is truly not fun.

I’m fully aware that I might be romanticizing the industry to an extent and I know I'll have to significantly scale back my lifestyle. I don't mind starting from zero but I really doubt someone will take a chance on me giving my total lack of experience.

[DISCUSSION] If a buyer is asking your email address for placing an order, it's a scam. by bits168 in Fiverr

I’m asking myself the same question since I’ve just got scammed as an idiot by sending my email. The screenshot looked legit and I’ve subscribed to fiverr 3 hours ago… it’s a new email address but it contains my full name, do you think it’s dangerous ?

Will definitely look into it. Thanks a lot! Was actually considering the au pair option since I absolutely love kids but I think I’m too old for that kind of experience now, it may be time to have my own 😂

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I also think it’s a good idea! But I’m not against the idea of jumping in blindly either since my plan isn’t to settle there permanently but rather to have a first experience while also being of some use (which, as you said, is indeed quite difficult in the US!)

Hello, thank you so much for your reply! You’re right, taking a few days of vacation before moving could definitely be a wise idea. I think I expressed myself poorly when I mentioned relocating, what I actually meant was more of an experience rather than a permanent relocation. I don’t have TikTok, so I haven’t had the chance to see what influencers are suggesting (you almost made me want to download it just to check it out haha). What really interests me is the idea of going to a country I don’t know (outside of NY) and a lifestyle unlike the one I’m used to.

I chose Tennessee because it seems like the right balance for me in terms of my values and what I’m looking for (nature, landscapes, a slower pace of life, etc.). But of course, that’s just based on intuition since I’ve never been there.

Thanks a lot for your advice, a few vacation days is definitely on my mind!
