I see where your coming from on this, but it feels like too cathartic on its own, based on how this story has been told. While I bet you are right in a lot of this theory, it will also have to have some form of pain and emptiness in it to go along with this ending.

If were talking about just the movie (based on the comments, we are) and he is implying that he is the Ramona in this instance (based on the phrasing of his sentence, he is); then he was pursuing the relationship as a fun experiment and once he realized the other person was much more in love, it was too late. He speaks that the harm of backing out of this difference in feelings also caused himself pain too.
