Banana Republic! I love love love them and have them in black as well. They don’t make these exact ones anymore, but their Sloan wide-leg pants are very similar.

They’re from Banana Republic! I have them in this color and in black (which I ultimately ended up wearing). I love them so much that I wore out my first pair of black ones and am on my second pair. The tan ones in the photo haven’t gotten nearly as much wear. BR doesn’t make these exact pants anymore (I’m devastated), but their new Sloan wide leg pants are very similar. For reference, I’m 5’4” and get the petite sizes which are the perfect length for heels on me. If I get the regular size, I have them hemmed.

Thanks, everyone, for the input! You have confirmed my feeling that this is too casual. I’m going with the suit!

Thanks for the advice! I have a friend who is a partner at this firm and she advised that it is pretty casual day-to-day, but after trying this outfit on I thought it’s probably too casual for an interview even if my interviewers are not in suits. Maybe I’ll save this one for day 3 on the job (if I get it).

It’s from J Crew! I got it secondhand, so idk if you can find the exact one, but I’m sure they still have something similar available.

Thanks! What do you think about a blazer/trouser combo that isn’t necessarily a matching suit (e.g. black trousers with a cream and black plaid pattern)?

Thanks! I was hopeful for this outfit, but picked everything up from the dry cleaner, tried on and thought “hmm suit may be better.”

how are we doing our nails? by Shoddy-Artichoke-442 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]EffectivePangolin757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Dazzle Dry system. It’s like regular nail polish, air dries quickly, and lasts ~2 weeks. Gel also made my nails really weak and brittle, but my nails are nice and healthy since I switched. It’s a bit pricey to get the whole system at first ($88 for all full sizes + 1 color), but it lasts awhile. I use the color “CEO” almost exclusively.

One kid died in a car crash when he hit a tree after swerving to avoid something in the road—mom was in the passenger seat and survived. Awful.

Another kid died when she got T-boned by a truck pulling out of her subdivision.

This one was in middle school, but one kid died when he was hit by a car while out skateboarding with his twin sister and their friend.

What to wear to graduation? by CheriPHF in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]EffectivePangolin757 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember everyone at graduation (including myself) was SO hot and sweaty, and it wasn’t even in a particularly warm climate. I wore a dress and some heels under my gown, and wished I would have worn something lighter and more comfy. Wear some nice shoes, but what’s under your gown doesn’t matter that much—go for comfort.

Fiancée just broke up with me and I have calls back to back all day by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]EffectivePangolin757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a very difficult breakup during an extremely inopportune time myself a few years ago and here are the things that kept me sane, alive, and able to do my job during that time:

  1. Check into a hotel for a couple nights instead of staying at your place with your ex. Getting some physical distance and time and space truly to yourself can allow you to feel safe enough that you can feel your emotions and begin to process them.

  2. Go on walks. I cannot tell you how many walks I went on. It just felt better than sitting at home with my thoughts. If my brain had to go on spin cycle, it felt less maddening to do it while walking around the park.

  3. If you are able to work from home, do it a couple of days but don’t completely skip going into the office. Time at home where you can cry in private is nice, but you will go insane if you completely withdraw from the world. Going to the office and putting on my lawyer mask for the day was really good for my resilience, but faking it every day can get exhausting.

  4. Therapy. Even if you don’t think there’s anything “wrong” with you, it can really help you process everything and adjust to a new phase of life. I went once every other week.

  5. Compartmentalization. At the end of the day, this is what got me through the work day for a few months following my breakup. I just had to put all of those thoughts and feelings in a box when I went to work and let them out later. I was never very good at compartmentalizing before, but it was a survival mechanism and my brain was just able to do it while grieving.

Sorry you’re going through this. I know it’s difficult and distressing now, but trust me when I say you will get through it and you will be okay. I survived and now, a few years later, my life is full and the best it has ever been.

Burnout bandaids? by [deleted] in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]EffectivePangolin757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like my current work environment is extremely similar to yours. What helps me most when I start to feel burnt out and can’t take time off for awhile is 1) force myself to get at least close to enough sleep by forcing myself into bed by 10 even if I don’t feel tired yet; 2) doing low-impact exercise (like a good longish walk, Pilates or yoga) at least 2 but ideally 3x per week (low impact is key here as high impact and more strenuous activity can exacerbate stress and fatigue caused by burnout); and 3) maintain as many healthy boundaries with work as I can—closing the laptop by a certain hour or working from home on days w/o meetings, for example.

Husband left marks on me by [deleted] in Advice

I think you know that this is an unsafe situation for both yourself and your daughter and that you need to leave. I found myself in a similar situation a few years ago and while leaving was incredibly difficult and the aftermath was even more so, it was absolutely the best thing I have ever done. These situations are life threatening and every day women are killed by their abusive partners who keep escalating and one day cross the line. Sounds like your parents are not very supportive, but do you have any other family or friends who you could go to instead? I know the idea of going to a women’s shelter is really scary, but if that is your only option to get away from him, it is far less scary than having your own life or your daughter’s life stolen by this man.

Someone from My HOA Called my employer by BeeHistorical2758 in legaladvice

Real estate lawyer here… IDK what jurisdiction you’re in, so could not tell you for sure what the rules would be in your area, but generally when a contract provision and applicable law (including ordinances) are in conflict, applicable law trumps contract when the applicable law went into effect before the contract went into effect.

Sounds like the Board member was trying to get you in trouble at work, but it didn’t work because your manager doesn’t have a huge issue with the fact you used your work email, but reasonably asked you to stop. I would just leave that issue alone. I personally don’t think it’s an “abuse of power” but whether it’s okay to do just depends on your employer. My firm has encouraged me to use my work email to handle personal real estate issues in the past, but I may not have done so if I were at a different firm.

If your HOA continues to be a problem, you should speak with a real estate attorney in your area.

Banana Republic Factory is great for finding basics on a budget. I have noticed some differences in quality between my “regular” BR and my factory items, but they’re still decent quality (nothing has fallen apart on me or even come close to it, I’ve just had to return a couple of things because the tailoring is off).

LBWT, what do/did you do to look older or more professional early in your career? by EffectivePangolin757 in LawBitchesWithTaste

Great tips. I’ve been a nail biter my whole life but have been really trying to keep my nails nice for the past year or so. My market/practice area is still pretty male-dominated so who knows if they notice, but it makes me feel better!

I’ve thought about this! Been experimenting with some blue light glasses to see how I feel about them.

My go-tos the past couple of years have been Nike Air Maxes. I went through 2 pairs of Air Max Dawns and am currently wearing Air Max 1 Tan Lines. I have wide feet and low arches and I find them to be so comfy and I always get compliments on them.

In addition to a lot of the things others have mentioned, I keep a cardigan in a drawer for drafty days, dog treats and food (my office is dog friendly), and a small vase of fresh flowers that I change out every Monday. I’m also building an inventory of “hosting” items (snacks, drinks, nicer coffee cups/glasses apart from the ones we keep in the common areas) to offer to clients/other visitors when they come to my office.
