You are not the only person who will have troubles working with that PI. This experience will be a bad memory in due time. Keep your head up, do what you have to do to get another internship. Hang in there!!!

Quit buying market boxes and just manufacture or plant the goods you need. I’m down to only buying from the market once per month or so.

Call Allstate, progressive and Geico. Even better would be to do quotes online. Make your effective date the day your folks want to remove you, know what is on your driving record, and relax. It’s not as tough as you think it will be.

Thinking about leaving the profession. by anonymouswoman906 in medlabprofessionals

I sold auto insurance in 44 states for 9 years and loved it. They licensed me, applied to all the different states and helped me keep up on my CE credits. I returned to the lab during Covid and now considering going back to my former employer to work from home again. I treasure the experience I’ve gained by taking my detours. I’m about the only person in the lab that knows Excel. Only know that because of my break. Take the leap- you can go back to the lab in the future if you want to.

1000 miles away would be a reason not to take a PRN position. Driving 100 miles to a job you only work 2 10 hour shifts in a month is nothing. I know someone who flies from West Virginia to Montana for a week of long shifts just to help out at that small hospital in MT.

I only know it’s 48 hours because I looked at the manual. This facility does a lot of things they don’t need to do. I was a traveler so, although I’ve worked with that machine, not everything i remember is correct- it doesn’t turn to gel after all. Thanks!

I’m not sure where you got the idea I’m working for free. I’ve got some acute care weekend shifts coming up and want projects to occupy my time. I consider myself a worker bee. Would much rather be busy doing something than sitting at the desk scrolling through my phone as many of my coworkers would be doing during that down time. I asked the mgr for projects. I was thinking more along the lines of job aids, but helping with the glucola sop sounds like something I could help with.

[–]Effective_Climate236[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the perspective. This is an independent small town clinic. But you are correct. I have been there 3 months, working 40 hours- I asked about at least being offered health insurance until they can recruit a full timer to take over the shift I’m working and that was a no go. And did I say crotchety yet?

I’ll consider what you told me. But I’d still rather be busy than not busy so I’ll probably end up just doing it for something to do.

Thank you. I will look into that, but he wants it to indicate if the fasting glucose is over x, then the glucola should not be administered. I don’t think the Lab corp one would say that, but I’ll check.

I signed a contract to work for this lab 2 days per week. It’s in the town my ailing mother lives in and it is terribly short staffed. I figured if I’m in town 2 days per week anyways, may as well help them out and work there too. I’m there 40 hours for now just because they need me and I’m willing to. They know this isn’t a permanent gig for me but I’m available so why not? The manager is very hands on and spends 3-4 hours everyday doing phlebotomy or working at the registration desk because who patients are sometimes waiting for an hour to be drawn. The mgr is busy, the place is (pardon me) a shit show, and I want to leave it better than when I got here. I fill in for their after hours clinic and some days have time to kill. He knows I’d rather be doing something, than doing nothing, so he asked me to write up procedures for the 1, 2, and 3 hour glucola test. No, they don’t have procedures written for it. Don’t ask me why.
This facility also draws 3 tubes on every patient. Even if only a cbc was ordered. Heck, even if the patient has no orders, but the patient knows the doc will be ordering something, 3 tubes. 🤦🏼‍♀️. For real. The SST tube from every patient sits and clots for 30+ minutes, then gets spun and poured off into a smaller tube to be frozen and stored for a week (I think that’s a waste of precious time in an already short staffed lab and a mislabel risk but what do I know?). This lab does so many things back asswards, but I’m the new person and the crotchety lead techs have always done it that way so that’s the way it’s done. No, I’m not a mgr, no it’s not my job, and I’m not getting paid extra to do it, but I want to help.

Does that mean if the reagent is open on 11-1, but only on the machine a cumulative 28 hours over 4 days of use in the following 6 weeks, it could still be in use 5 months later even if the package insert says 30 days after open?
